The focal point of the short story is not particulate the task itself,but how Rowan was successful at his mission by doing so without question or reason. The character Rowant is the primary lesson of the short story,"Message to Garcia"(Hubbard,1899).Roman's ability to do what he was told to accomplish regardless of the lack of information he received. Elbert Hubbard continously, uses examiles relating to how many individuals would of completed the task in a divergent manner. In fact, it is required reading material for all 1st Lieutenants in the Marine Corps as well as in the United States Military Academy at West Point. Many Army leaders have read the book and often discuss it among themselves in social situations. Although a fiction read, many leaders extrapolate the use of mission command as well as the leaderships attributes. In this analysis I will be comparing a single event in the novel to the Army’s leadership principles as well as Mission Command. I will then provide a personal reflection and conclude.

A leader unwilling to sacrifice individual goals for the good of the unit cannot convince other unit members to do so. The mission suffers with potentially devastating effects. While personal goals often coincide with Army goals, there is no room for personal agendas at the expense of the institution or the American people. It is a standard in the hierarchy of military customs and courtesies that the leader must display to his subordinates that he is willing to put in extra effort, sacrifice personal time, and show initiative and motivation in order to achieve the same from his Soldiers.

When a leader can instill trust in their soldier and get them to do something without instilling fear; the work quality will be greater and the output will be greater. Why? Because a soldier will trust a good leader’s word and even if the leader is not around all the time, the soldier will want to continue to do the right thing because the integrity and trust of the leader is greatly valued to the soldier and will conclusively generate the foundation of loyalty.
Service members in the military are faced with tough decisions on a daily basis. Despite the difficult situations, the majority of service members will opt to the right thing. However; there are several service members who will elect the easy path and end up choosing the wrong decision, even though they know the right thing to do. I agree with General. H. Norman Schwarzkopf that people know the right thing to do and that it is difficult to execute because of a person’s belief, risky behavior, and integrity.
No one can get success without having the trust of people on his capabilities because without that he won’t be able to gain enough confidence to take desired actions without the fear of being rejected. Lastly, he must take some steps in order to prove him a leader and also to make him realize his very own potential (Jim Murray).
