The price of college is a big factor when looking at colleges. Two main things students look for in a college is the education and the price. All schools differ in the pricing of their content. That includes books, dorm, facilities, price per semester, and much more. Community colleges eliminate a big chunk of the typical college expenses. If a student is looking for a great inexpensive education, attending a two year colleges is the choice to make. Saving money throughout college is a very beneficial thing to do. College is the transitioning point from a child to an adult in most cases. In today’s era, money a big factor in a human's everyday life. With no money there's no way to pay for food or find a place to live. Attending a four year university can be tens of thousands of dollars. In the long run, the more money saved or well spent, the better chance for an easier life. Most high school students are required to go to college if they want to be successful in life. S. D. Kingsley and Noelle Vance, authors of the article, "Point: Public College Tuition Should Be Free, Just Like High School", explain how college should be free if it is a necessity for a successful life. Kingsley and Vance provide the statistic, “More than 90% of high school students expect to at least start college; 70% expect to earn a degree”(par.10). If 90% of the population of high school students are required to enter a college, colleges should be free or at least they should be way cheaper. Although community colleges are school that are not free, their prices are drastically different than universities. Statistics show that college tuition has increased dramatically in the past few years. Daniel Casse and Bruno V. Manno, authors of the article "The Cost and Price of College and the Value of Higher Education", provide statistics that show the increase in tuition. Casse
Tuition cost plays a vital role in deciding whether to attend a community college or a four year institution. According to Susan Stafford, “Tuition for community colleges is affordable while tuition costs at public institutions are usually at least twice that of a community college” (1). The tuition cost in universities can be overwhelming and highly unaffordable, This have caused many students to graduate with s heavy loads of debt but by attending a community college, an individual can
Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. With knowing that, everyone deserves to have a proper education in their life. The three reasons why post-secondary education should be free are that the cost of tuition is very high and a lot of families can’t afford it. The next reason is that Canada is behind in funding education compared to other developed countries.
Community college which is usually paid off by the government through grant and fee waivers for for low-income students is a way of continuing your growth after high school, although these institutions aren’t the very best type of education you can get it is a start. The type of students that usually go to community colleges are either low income and can't afford to pay for any other schools(without help from financial aid) or people who simply didn’t get the best grades in high school but still chose to continue their path of education. In the article “As He Promotes It, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea.” Joanne Jacobs explains to us some of the pros and cons about having free community college. With the cons weighing out the pros, in my opinion, community college should not be free because it would take away the significance of going to college. I highly doubt that college students would want to slack off in classes that they are paying for. It works sort of as like an incentive since money isn't easily earned, so by allowing students to attend college for free would make community college more of a continuation of high school.
In the short article “As He Promotes It, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea” by Joanne Jacobs, is about why making community college free can be a problem and why it can also be a benefit to many people. Community College tuition can be very expensive and many people might not have the money for it. Making community college free can be a good thing for those who can’t and can afford college. Community College shouldn’t be something we have to pay for and should be free. If Community College would be free it would be great opportunity for many people.
These days, community college enrollment is increasing exponentially at schools across the country, while four-year institutions have seen a small drop in student population within the past year. Although tuition is getting more expensive across the board, community colleges are still significantly more affordable than most four-year institutions. The reasons countless
Harvard you can take a wide range of studies for instance, they offer law , African and African American Studies , Anthropology , Biomedical Engineering , Chemical and Physical Biology. But at Central Piedmont Community College They only offer a limited amount of majors that you can take like advertising and graphic design , Basic Law Enforcement Training, Accounting , The Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology. As a disadvantage is that you only can choose a handful of job choices. Say that you wanted to be a lawyer and you couldn't afford to pay a four year college or university because you had low income and you didn't want to graduate college with thousands of dollars in debt plus you have to into law school as well. So now since you applied to a community college or a two year college you have to choose a different job career or hobby. Some positives if you choose to attend a four year college is that you get to live the college life. Like they have different event on campus. Say if you are going to Central Piedmont Community College instead of you going to Harvard they have different events like homecoming , and you can miss out on Greek life and you get to meet new
College can be looked at as a life investment. It is an investment for the future of your life in hopes that it will pay off later in life. College is expensive, but can be affordable for all of those who try. In 2008, Students who applied to attend a four-year college received an estimated average of $5,400 in financial aid and state grants (“Trends in College Pricing”). With this estimated $5,400, this can reduce any students’ price of college to around $1,000 to $3,000 per year! This is an
Community college should be free for all students who want to attend school. There should be a set of rules applied to those that would take advantage of this privilege. In the United States, there are not very many programs that offer the opportunity for students to attend free colleges like other countries have. Some examples of the countries are Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany and France. The U.S. does have some programs that offer free tuition. For example Tennessee offers free tuition to students. The Tennessee Promise is a scholarship program that pays for your community college so you can go there tuition free. Another program is the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) in New York at the City University of New York. Community colleges should be free because it would not only attract more students, but would help students to focus more on school rather than thinking about how they are going to pay for their education. However, we need guidelines for applicants to attend such as maintaining a high GPA, giving back through community services hours, and other rules and guidelines to attract students that would continue to excel in their education and not waste the opportunity given to them to work towards a good career and give back.
There are two types of colleges, the community college and the 4 year institutions Community College is a 2 year institution that provides affordable postsecondary education. Going to a community college will save you lots of money. The tuition at a 4 year school is twice as the tuition at a community college. Usually the first 2 years of college you will take your core classes like math, science and etc. Why pay twice as more at a 4 year
Independent.Leadership.Equality. All of these are three characteristics as to what free university education can provide to citizens.Higher education should be free of charge for the citizens of the United States. In the US the average cost for colleges per year is $8,893. Many middle class and under class people cannot afford such costs. It is true that the government will give you grants but most of the time students never get funding from them (Emmons 3). Most people of today can hardly afford a car let alone the fees and tuition of college. Also, it could provide equality to all people. Allowing everyone an equal opportunity to go to college and make something of themselves. It provides a way for poorer families to break free from
College is supposed to be the memory of a lifetime not just an experience. College is about getting out and meeting new people from all over the world, learning how to live and do things on your own without having your parents telling you to do your homework or study for a test, but most of all college is for you to go and make your dream come true by getting a degree and making something out of your life. College may be expensive, but if you believe in your goal, then the cost shouldn’t matter.
If college was free students would have to want to continue their education and get a degree. While free would make college affordable, those receiving the benefit would need to have stipulations for the free classes they are attending. Michael J. Petrilli is the president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. Petrilli states, “… just 40 percent of 12th graders are college-ready, even though nearly 70 percent already head straight into college.” He is correct that many high school graduates are not prepared to transition to college. Many don’t have the attention span to sit in longer classes. Students are used not study over a time period, but rather cram the night before the due assignment. Some stipulations would be; you have to finish and get a degree, you have to keep your GPA up, and if you drop out without a good reason you have to pay back the money you used.
Over the years, college fees have gradually risen for high school graduates. It’s been said that most jobs with a college degree earn almost double of what a high school graduate would earn. Many people all over the country have been unable to go to college because of these high fees for education. Some people think that your future shouldn’t be controlled by the amount of money you pay. If these fees continue to increase, then no one will be able to attend college. Higher education for free will increase productivity within students because they can get a good job, college is now a prerequisite, and college worthy jobs have great salaries.
College, in our everyday world, is considered to be something that uplifts or elevates a person's opportunity in life and is widely regarded as a huge reward on completion. However, is taking away some of the risk in this achievement, the correct thing to do? Changing an integral part of American society, such as college, could have many life changing and societal negative effects and is overall not worth it. College should not be free the first two years due to a necessity to raise taxes to accommodate the "free college", academic and educational quality being hindered due to more teachers being needed, and apathy among students if college became risk free.
One reason why a community college is better to start off with is because of flexibility. Some students might have to work while attending college, therefore receiving a degree from a two-year college allows them to work and be able to focus on school. More night classes are available at a community college rather than a four year university, so if the student attending college has to work while attending school they have a variety of times for classes. Some mothers’ or fathers’ might decide that they want to go back to college to further their education for a better life for their family and the community college is closer to home plus more class times available to better fit their schedule. In "Public Community Colleges: Creating Access and Opportunities for First-Generation College Students," Everett cited Horn, Nevill, & Griffith that at least ninety-six percent of students who attend a community college travel a median of ten miles from their home to the
