Do you think extracurricular activities should be made mandatory in schools? These activities can be anything that fall outside the category of the school’s academic syllabus. For example, debates, football, writers club etc. Different schools have different kinds of activities. Extracurricular activities take place in schools through the year, and exist for all age groups from preschool to collage. These activities are available for everyone to participate. (Feldman & Matjasko, 2005) Conducted a study which revealed that about 70% of adolescents are involved in some kind of extracurricular activity. There are many people who believe that extracurricular activities should not be made mandatory, but there are others who keep the opposing idea …show more content…
Extracurricular activities should be made mandatory as it helps students succeed in the future life as they learn valuable skills. (Reed, 2001) mentions in his research that the students used leadership qualities in their curricular experience that they developed through extracurricular activities. These activities make students keener to attend school and improves academic performance. (Fujita, n.d) In her research found that participating in athletic activities, and community service improved the academic performance of the students surveyed. Participation in these activities helps students receive more versatile form of education. (Lunenburg, 2010) Explains that extracurricular activities are a combination of experience and knowledge as they don’t provide summaries and shreds of information; instead, it they are a combination of numerous real life situations. In my opinion, making extracurricular activities mandatory can benefit students in many ways as they would develop and master most of their skills. In addition, they would learn to prioritize and learn time management which helps students greatly. Students themselves should participate in these activities voluntarily as it is for their own
Extracurriculars are there for students to enjoy activities other than their academics, but it is also a way to shows that they can focus on education and outside life at the same time. Some students do not take school seriously enough. Coming to school might just be a way for athletes to participate in the sport they want to. Not every students has exceeding academic skills, however, anyone can succeed if they just try. Being able to multitask will behoove the students in the future. Undergraduates tend to separate their school and outside life. Older adults do this as well; but instead of school, it is work they have to worry about. During exam week, students will want to study and it will take away their eating and sleeping time. Eating and studying is a vigorous way to
Although extracurricular activities can be costly, high schools shouldn't stop funding extracurricular activities because clubs help students find who they are and what they like, and sport clubs like football actually generate money for the school and school pride.
A study published in 2007 focused on “high poverty high schools,” where at least half the students were on free or reduced lunch, it showed that the students that did not participate in extracurricular activities graduated from high school 69 percent of the time while students who did participate in extracurricular activities graduated 82.7 percent of the time (“Extracurriculars Boost High School Graduation Rates”). Furthermore students who participate in sports or extracurricular activities compared to those who do not participate or who have not been involved in extracurricular activities show; higher grades and attainment, improved personal confidence and self esteem, greater connections with school, attachments and support from adults,
In my point of view, extracurricular activities are what shape a student into what they are or become. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization that helps students obtain the leadership, hands on, professional, and employability skills that America is searching for. Although at first, students do not find this extracurricular activity as interesting as a sport, they fail to recognize that this organization is for students and ran by students. As Pope John Paul II said, “The future starts today, not tomorrow.” Today, I know that SkillsUSA is helping me take a step closer to what I want to do in my
Participation can make someone feel more fulfilled in life and can increase their self-esteem by making them feel more capable in the act of doing (Law, 2002, p. 640). In general, participation in extracurricular activities outside of work or school increases quality of life for both children and adults. When children participate in sports or clubs, their risk of smoking, low self-esteem and having difficulty making friends decreases. Adults that volunteer or participate in recreational activities are proven by research to live longer and have higher quality of life. (Law, 2002, p. 641) Speaking from experience, as a freshman in college during my undergrad, all I did was study – I didn’t attempt to make friends or participate in any organizations. As one can image, I can’t say I was experiencing a high quality of life because I needed to be engaging in activities with
With a regular schedule for all these students, everyone is expected to simply do the work at home, and come back to school to turn it in and receive more and do the same process over and over. But when there are other activities a child can be involved in, it makes routines have a slight change. Especially if these certain “activities” are being a requirement and not just an option because there are always students who never try new activities and miss out on opportunities. Therefore, students should be offered extracurricular activities in their schools because it gains skills and builds pride to be successful academically in Anaheim. In the documentary, “Mad Hot Ballroom” the director, Marilyn Agrelo, states that “the kids that are
One reason why I believe schools should not be able to limit our extracurricular activities is because no one knows what I am capable of better than myself. For example, I always thought I was a good basketball player until I tried wrestling. I did both wrestling and basketball at the same time for almost a month till I had to drop out of basketball because I figured I am a much better wrestler than a basketball player. Another example could be Matthew Stafford. For those who do not know who Matthew Stafford, he is a pro-NFL quarterback for the Detroit Lions. He was the first draft in 2009 for Detroit Lions. While he was in high school he played varsity Baseball and he also was considered to be one of the best high school quarterbacks in the United States ranked ahead
I conducted an interview with Dr. Martinez, the current principal of Early College High School explained that many of clubs that the school creates have become co-curricular activities or “classes” for two reasons: it easier to fund and to find a coordinator. Up until our interview, I was not aware of this process. However, I have witnessed this first hand as soccer was once an actual school sport, but it eventually became a class. Furthermore, Dr. Martinez noted that it is easier to get an extracurricular activity approved through either CCC or OCC than the school’s own district. Although the students do get to take part in an activity they have some interest in, it is rather considered a class rather than an extracurricular rather than an actual class. This becomes problematic because when students begin to apply for colleges, they are unable to consider as extracurricular because they are taking part in the extracurricular during the school schedule and not outside the classroom. Jeff Brenzel, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University, explains in an interview posted by CollegeBoard, he explains that many colleges prefer students that are well rounded such that they are doing well in academics and involved in an organization. However, he explains that they prefer students that are involved in a organization that they are interested regardless of how popular or how bizarre the organization. This then
I say we should not get rid of our extracurricular for the health of us kids. It is stupid to get rid of it. We love our extracurricular. It would be helpful to get kids active it keep us healthy. It also keeps us going. If I need to I will raise the money to help. It would be better if we keep our extracurricular.
If you asked my teachers about extracurriculars, they would say they take students’ time away from homework. If you asked me, I would say they keep students’ motivated in school and spark their interest. Almost anywhere you go, kids involved in sports are referred to as “student athletes.” Being a student should always come first, but athletics holds importance too. For many of us, sports are our whole lives. For me that is definitely true right now. Athletics have played a huge role in helping me develop through my adolescent life, but I am not sure they need to continue to play as large of a role going into my future.
Let's pretend that there is a kid, this kid has all A's and one C and wants to at least get honor roll. The kid wants to do some extra credit work to bring up his grade but he or she is forced to do an extracurricular activity, therefore is to busy to do his or her extracurricular activity. This a great example of why students shouldn't be forced to do an extracurricular activity. I believe that students should be able to choose what they wish to do in school. A half surprising amount of high school students get straight A’s. What if a student has a poor grade or what if a student just doesn't want to do an extracurricular activity. Another reason is what if a student is too busy. Those are just a few reasons why we should be able to choose to do an extracurricular activity.
That said, I do think some things should be changed. I think college’s costs and the way they're paid for need to be changed, because I don't think money should be a barrier to a college education for ANYONE. And I don't think extracurricular activities should be as important in the admissions process as they
Students spend an average of 1,260 hours a school, they are required to do many thing inside and outside schools to be a good student. Students must ask questions, listen, study, and spend countless hours to get work done. Doing an extracurricular activity should not be added to the list. Why should we add more to students plates? Students should not have to do an extracurricular activity.
Schools should remove after-school sports because it will prevent students from being a social outcast. Sports distract students from their studies and cause them to get behind in school. It also cause more clicks to be formed such as the “jocks” or the “nerds” and even the people that are treated like outcasts because they feel like they don't belong in either groups of people.
Let's say that the principal said "Hello students, Starting tomorrow everyone must have an extracurricular activity!", Many students would like this and other wouldn't. Some would pick a more artistic revolving one while some pick a sport related activity. But these have their tolls. Like parents will probably pay to have their kids go. So I say no extracurricular activities.
