Should governments keep a control over the production of GM plants?
Oxford Dictionaries defines being “genetically modified” is equivalent to containing artificially altered genetic material designed to have desirable traits. (Oxford Dictionaries, 2011). It was in 1973 that Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer co-founded the means to achieve DNA cloning and techniques to transplant genes between different biological species and genetic engineering was born (Time, 2002). It is arguable that hybrid species and selective breeding has already existed thousands of years before. Genetic Engineering is the modern technology which is both feared and loved by the scientific community. But, the findings and investigations made on certain pros and cons are often disputed because the research into GM plants are done by scientists and researchers funded by large corporations that promote and sell GM technology. On the other hand, other scientists may stand against GM technology because of moral dilemma and other personal interests. It may even be important for a country or as a whole world to lay out strict and just protocols in testing, documenting and informing the general public about the real pros and cons of the technology.
Although it is believed by some people that genetically modified plants are beneficial, they should be regulated by the governments because they can contaminate the environment, their safety cannot be guaranteed and they can destabilize farmers' economy.

The concept of intentionally altering an organism’s DNA in order to produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been critically analyzed by both science and the mainstream media in the last decade. However, the genetic modification of organisms is not a recent innovation as humans have been modifying organisms for over 30 000 years (Rangel, 2015). Back then, breeding through artificial selection was the most prominent method of genetic engineering. Organisms with the most desirable traits would be bred together in order to create a new generation of superior organisms. Throughout the centuries, the developments in science and technology have resulted in new methods of genetic engineering. Now, genomes can be spliced in order to insert or remove genes. It has essentially come down to a copy and paste process with genes from animals being inserted into plants as the common practice.

Genetically modified crops are harmful to humans and the environment and shouldn't be used. Agriculture should proceed in harmony with nature and nature only. That is why some people have decided to buy organically grown food. From their experiences with organic food, they believe that the organic system can be economically practical. This system also provides a wide range of environmental and social benefits, and most importantly, it enables consumers to make a choice about the food they eat. According to Diana Brander, an American biology teacher, we should have the choice of the type of food we eat.

Not only are GMOs harmful to humans they affect many other communities. “GMOs are also responsible for killing off bees, bats, butterflies, and other pollinators, whose bodies are unable to handle the onslaught of altered DNA and chemicals that are characteristic of GMO technologies”(Bensen). This shows that GMO is not only an issue for humans but it directly affects the insect and animals communities around the plants. These are living organisms that these plants need for pollination. GMOs and the pesticides used on these crops to fight off the insects and weeds is creating more powerful weeds and insects called “SuperWeeds” and “SuperBugs.” “And this built-in resistance has allowed farmers to indiscriminately spray chemicals like Roundup on their crops without worrying about killing them. But this system is now failing, as the weeds and pests targeted by GMO technologies have mutated and developed resistance to crop chemicals and Bt toxin” (Benson). These chemicals are effective for a short period of time However these chemicals become ineffective, the offspring of the insects can be immune to the chemical. Genetically modified organisms appear to be abnormal, but due to scientific research and plain evidence, GMOs are quite agreeable and safe. To first oppose or accept a new concept, one must first reach out and study what he or she doesn’t know. Genetically modified organisms are created by conveying genetic information from one organism to another to get the desired trait.

Companies and researchers alternate the genetic structure of crops to withstand pesticides, non-GM weeds and insects can gradually develop a resistance to the chemicals. At this point farmers actually have to increase their use of pesticides. These practice causes weed populations to adapt to the herbicide and eventually become resistant to it. Once these superweeds emerge farmers must find a new herbicides and more potent products.
Its important to understand that genetic modification is the same thing as biotechnology.
