Teachers in public schools are well-educated and friendly individuals who love their job or career field. Therefore, they should want to teach things that have a positive and educational outcome. Sadly, many teachers have chosen a different path by allowing books with questionable material to be a way of teaching. It is very upsetting to parents because these certain books contain poor language, sexuality, and lastly violence. There are many reasons as to why they shouldn’t be permitted to teach these type of books. To begin with, they contain bad qualities such as violence which lately has been a big problem in the schools your children attend. Whether it be bringing guns to school, fighting, having knifes, having shoot-outs, or even threatening
The Eleventh Circuit Court held that if school board believes the books are too vulgar and sexually explicit for students which means that if any school curriculum regulations are ‘‘reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns” they can remove books from the curriculum. However, they decided to keep the book in the school library and allowed teachers and students to discuss the material during class discussions.
Reason one; books should not be banned on the grounds of “they’re a bad influence”. The world is a bad influence and the people that inhabit the world are worse. In the cases of some books, some children have already lived through what has been banned. In other cases, it is just the parents being too over-proctective. They have already lived through some of the events, and do not want their kids to experience the same thing, which can also slow down how the child learns. In addition, if the students are desperate to find ideas for things because they don’t get the help from their parents, it means the parents are ignoring their kids
Not only do school administrators want to ban specific books from schools, parents want to take action on this as well. Parents are caving their children away from exposure to the real world. Adults ponder about their children being too young to read these detailed books. The "Book of Solomon" by Toni Marrison was banned at Franklin Central High School due to parents thinking that the content was too explicit. The book contains highly detailed passages of violence and sex. Veerkamp, a worker of the school's administration and father of a student in his 9th grade year, states in paragraph 14 of source number two, "But if it doesn’t get banned... I can assure you that my kids wot be laying eyes on it,"
Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men is an American literary classic. The novel was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. It tells a story of Lennie and George, two men looking for work during the time of the Great Depression. The novel reveals that Lennie has a mental illness and George is held responsible for taking care of him. Being set in the mid 1930’s , many people did not understand mental illnesses, hence the actions and strong language of the characters.
Many school districts do not have “manga”or “anime” banned (Debate.org). This style of literature is often considered non educational. Books should at least have censorship when profanity or have sexually explicit content are used. Reading this content as a student is 100% unnecessary. In a study done in 2000-09 by the American Library Association, about 1,250 books were challenged because of offensive language. Around 1,600 books were challenged in that same study for being sexually explicit (Butler.edu). During this, almost all books that were banned were either in school libraries or schools. A common example of a banned book is Harry Potter by J.Kk. Rowling. This book has a “presence of witchcraft”’(Butler.edu). In many people's’ minds, witchcraft is extremely bad, and completely unnecessary to discuss those topics. Since many people are against witchcraft, if that was to be discussed in schools, awful consequences for teacher as well as student could result.
School boards and teachers have a responsibility for protecting the minds of their students and covering age appropriate material. However, does this responsibility cover the extreme act of banning books from school classrooms? Does not the teacher have a duty to introduce to their students world issues in order to better the students ability to cope with problems in the world? How does a school decide which books should be banned from the classroom, and should it be left up to the teacher to decide what is decided in his/her classroom. By banning books from the classroom, we prevent our students from learning about controversial topics in a safe environment, and we also encroach upon the student’s freedom of reading what they want in
School boards, principals, and teachers have a responsibility for protecting the minds of their students by covering grade and age appropriate material in the classroom. However, does this given responsibility cover the act of banning books from their classrooms? As an advocate for each student, does the teacher not have a duty to introduce the students to a these words issues in order to help the student cope with the different problems in the world? How does a school decide which books should be banned and how much say does the teacher have what should be left up to the teacher? Some say that banning books from the classroom, we prevent them from learning about different controversial topics in a safe and secure environment. In this paper I reflect on my research question: Why do schools ban books in the classroom?
Books are a part of our society that entertain us through literature by showing us new experiences and characters that we may relate to or easily might despise due to how they are written, these are usually found in teen novels, comic books, manga, and many more. Books have also usually taught us through traditional means by teaching us about history and other things about society and overall morals we learn at a young age. However, some people have actually taken offense to certain books due to the content inside the book being “too offensive to them and have asked that these books be banned while other people want these books to stay. It’s a consistent debate of whether certain books should be banned or not and there are different viewpoints
but, the books that contain this language may be teaching the kid about a part of our past and by knowing about that past hopefully they will not repeat it. On another standpoint, by banning these books, it is possible we are setting a precedent for our children and others that it is okay to take away rights that we have head for centuries. It is possible that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (Text 3). This piece of evidence supports the idea that it is possible for the domino effect to come into play here suggesting the possibility of more of our rights may be in jeopardy after
It is no surprise reading is a powerful thing. For this reason, school boards have always been suspicious of what students might be learning in schools. School boards throughout the United States have and are banning books from high schools. Banned books are books or other printed works such as essays or plays which are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means due to the content that is being presented such expletives and sexual related that can affect the lives of the younger scholars. The practice of banning books is a form of censorship. Therefore, books that are more reported due to their content should be banned from high schools.
There has recently been a renewed interest and passion in the issue of censorship. In the realm of the censorship of books in schools alone, several hundred cases have surfaced each year for nearly the past decade. Controversies over which books to include in the high school English curriculum present a clash of values between teachers, school systems, and parents over what is appropriate for and meaningful to students. It is important to strike a balance between English that is meaningful to students by relating to their lives and representing diversity and satisfying worries about the appropriateness of what is read. This burden often falls on teachers. The purpose of this research paper is to discuss
It is my belief that since by the time the child is required to read such literature in school, they are at an age where they can distinguish between things that should and should not be said and it is the job of the parents to educate the child that just because they say it in a book does not mean he or she should.Another subject common to banned and censored books is sexuality.
Many books throughout the ages have been challenged, banned and even burned. Stories of worried parents challenging books to protect their kids are all over the internet. These worried parents argue that the vulgar material isn't
Public high schools known today vary greatly from their original predecessor. Attending high school is now a requirement for all children up until 16-18 depending on the state. When free public high school originally started, public did not mean for everyone. Students who were considered to be “the choicest youth” (Reese 165). Admittance to high school was treated then as college admittance is treated now.
Certain books depict ideas or messages that go against socially acceptable norms or the topics may not be age-appropriate for the intended audience. However, no one person or group should decide what should or should not be read. Certain books should not be banned from schools and libraries
