Every day billions of people walk among our earth with ease, whether they’re going to school, work, or just to browse the shopping center windows. Now imagine seeing strangers walking around with handguns visible to the naked eye while shopping, or walking to school or work. Lawmakers are putting forth the effort to pass a law allowing any person with a CHL(Concealed Handgun Licenses) to openly carry a handgun in plain view, not only are law makers pushing to pass open carry in public, but also on college campuses. In the February 2015 article in the Dallas Morning News written by Dean Weingarten he states, “Texas outright ban on carrying handguns in plain view is unusual. Only California, Florida, Illinois, New York, South Carolina, and Washington, D.C. have similar laws” (n.p). The state of Texas already allows people to carry concealed as long as the person is certified with a CHL. So why change the law? They shouldn’t! Law makers should leave the gun laws the way they are, for changing the law from concealed to open carry, and allowing open gun carry on college campuses will only be a distraction to the students attending that college, cause fear and anxiety, and will result in unnecessary shootings because of carelessness. There has always been an ongoing issue with gun control laws since the beginning of the NRA (National Rifle Association). The NRA was formed in 1871 by Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate; the NRA was originally created to promote the
The role guns play in our society has long been debated on whether or not citizens have the right to own guns. There are those who believe that guns have no role in the hands of private citizens. Whereas there are those who believe that guns are the very foundation that protects our rights and liberties expressed in the Constitution. The debate is over whether or not there should be stricter laws preventing people to own guns. Though gun control and gun rights advocates share similar views on background checks and requirements, each have different views on the safety of guns and the Second Amendment meaning.
More gun laws would have a negative effect on shootings and crime rates. Stricter gun laws would not prevent people from getting guns, would not prevent killings, and would not fare well with the people of the United States. Strict gun laws would only prevent law-abiding citizens from getting guns, and criminals would still be able to get them. Crime and shooting rates do not go down after increase in gun-restrictive laws are passed. People in the United States have the right to defend themselves from harm, and the 2nd Amendment right to own firearms.
Every day some news related to gun violence are being heard all over the world. Shooting in driveway, public places, schools, homicide and suicide are some of different types of gun violence. Shooting on people and killing them is a big issue in the world and different comments are provided about that. One of the most important of them is about gun control laws. Stingl (2013) says “The term gun control as it is used in the United States refers to any action taken by the federal government or by state or local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens.” According to this idea gun control laws should be
More than 32,000 people die each year in the United States alone due to gun related violence. These people are robbed of their future because of the carelessness of others, or even themselves. Their family and friends are no longer able to see them. All of this, because of one pull of a trigger. Many people die from gun violence each year. In order to prevent these unnecessary deaths, there should be stricter gun laws to prevent the severe loss of life, suicide, and school shootings.
Allowing concealed weapons on campus has been around for several years now. Sides such as, Students for Concealed Carry, who advocate for the right to carry on campuses and the other opposing such thing. Former, Students for Concealed Carry Director, David Burnett wrote an article about the reasons as to why students should be able to carry on campuses. Burnett was the director for the group in 2011, he wanted to get the word out about this cause during his time. Burnett wrote several articles about the reasons to why students should be allowed to carry on campus. Also the websites states, “state-issued concealed handgun licenses should be allowed the same measure of personal protection on college campuses that current laws afford them virtually everywhere else.”(1) Burnett states this into his article because under the new law, only those who have a concealed handgun license would be able to carry. Those with licenses can freely carry in movie theaters, grocery stores, banks, shopping malls and even churches so why should a
Every student should feel safe when stepping foot on campus, but allowing concealed handguns on campus grounds brings forth fear and doubt. A new Texas state law allows license holders to have concealed handguns in college buildings and classrooms. I firmly believe in the second amendment, which provides the right to bear arms: this means that everyone has the right to protect their selves, families, and land. However, I stand completely against the new state law (which moves into effect in Aug. of 2016) that is allowing license-carrying gun holders to carry their weapons to and from classes in universities. With this ruling moving closer into effect, many faculty members and college students are now realizing the dangers that this will bring forth. This bill was passed to help protect and defend students from possible school shooters, but in reality, it only jeopardizes the safety and trust of many students and faculty members.
The right to bear arms is a very important right to some Americans. This right gives Americans the right to protect themselves if they need to at any time. While some people agree that this is a right everyone deserves, it can create controversy in some circumstances. One of these places where open carry causes controversy is in the school system. With news about gun violence at various school locations throughout the country, it is only natural for people to feel uncomfortable about the situation. Especially if the open carry law goes into effect on the anniversary of a school shooting. Texas’ new campus carry law went into effect fifty years after the shooting at the University of Texas at Austin. Texas’ new campus carry law will cause more harm than good because it can make some people uncomfortable due to the fear of a domestic shooter and the fact that this law goes into effect at universities after the fiftieth anniversary of the shooting at the University of Texas at Austin.
“If you’ve got a person thats raped because you didn't let them carry a firearm to defend themselves, I think you’re responsible,” State Representative Dennis K. Baxley of Florida said during a debate in a house subcommittee. When a person goes out for the night and are heading back home after the party, game, etc there is a chance someone is capable of doing something to them therefore having a licensed gun will protect them. A student should be able to defend his or hers self at all cost. Having a CCW can be the reason a person can save themselves or someone else’s life. The shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007 was one of the deadliest shootings in US history, when a gunmen went on a shooting spree leaving more than 30 students and faculty members dead. If the campus carry law was passed before this disaster took place there would not have been as many casualties and many of these killings would have been prevented. However, now lawmakers in 10 states are pushing the campus carry law, assuring that violence in school is reduced in a dramatic number. According, to CNN.com many people disagree with the campus carry law due to the fact that most school shootings are by students when they are out partying or acting juvenile. Many people say that a college campus is not a place for gun, but people do not take into consideration that all these incidents
Concealed carry allows individuals the ability to carry certain concealed firearms in public. In order to carry a concealed weapon qualified individuals must obtain a permit from a designated government authority. Certain states demand different requirement, as well some do not allow Non-residents permits. Some state regulations may ban concealed weapons in specified places, like churches and schools. Due to recent shootings occurring at educational institution, a number of people are asking whether this restriction is rational: Should states permit concealed weapons on college campuses? Are guns on campus a deterrence to school shootings?
Because the United States Constitution states that all citizens have the right to bear arms, and the government has control over all public space, a college student has the right to carry a concealed weapon with a license in Texas. However, the threat of shooters to become anyone with a gun and the risk of students going berserk make the Campus Carry law seem useless and meaningless. Therefore, the Texas state Government should rethink and abolish a law that has too many risks and not so much of a reward.
There are several debates among people that remain in a repetitive and vicious cycle of what is right, and what is wrong. Concealed carry on college campuses is one of those noticeable arguments. As the years pass by, gun rights on college campuses have become a touchy subject that is normally avoided at dinner tables and formal events. The laws concerning concealed carry on college campuses vary from state to state, and also from campus to campus. Several factors about concealed carry either have people uneasy while others adamantly fight for more gun rights on college campuses and universities. Should concealed carry be allowed on campus, and are people taking into account school violence, learning environment, crime, student’s safety and constitutional rights?
I think it is good idea to have stricter gun law on the country; it will reduce the gun violence. Gunshot which included: suicide, homicide, accident. According to article, Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted? shows that “the United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world” (http://gun-control.procon.org/). In the second amendment of United States, people have right to buy a gun to protect themselves if they take certain class and pass the test. The main problem is that do people really use the gun for self-protection or they use for gun violence? In the CCN article, Death and guns in the USA: The story in six graphs points out that “In the U.S., guns
I believe that the United States. should not enact stricter gun control laws because people have the right to self protection,
The average college student carries notebooks, a laptop, and maybe some snacks or water in their backpack, what if it held a gun? Although many guns rights activists support the new Open Carry Bill 910 that allows concealed guns on college campuses, gun control laws should be enforced rather than be made ineffectual because guns are rarely used in self defense, it would decrease the number of gun deaths, and the average college student isn’t responsible enough to carry a gun.
One day I was walking in to the school and I noticed a sign that stated “There will be no guns on this campus.” It didn’t register until the other day when I was talking with a friend of mine and she mentioned college students are able to carry guns on campus. I thought “no way” so I looked up on the internet and found that on August 1, 2016 a law was passed for college students over the age of 21 years and have a concealed handgun license can carry their gun into class. This is a huge concern to me for the following reason; many of the kids that age are not mature enough to handle responsibility, they are very emotional, and they don’t think about the consequences.
