Should The Second Amendment Be Allowed In The United States?

The second amendment was put in place to prevent a government that turns against the country and we have the right to fight back. A lot of people think that the second amendment needs to be altered but in the fine print it says "shall not be infringed". The first 10 amendments, otherwise known as the bill of rights, set the guidelines of our country. These first ten should never change and we should enforce them rather than complain about them.

The Second Amendment, in order for the role it plays in our to society to be fully understood, must be contemplated in the same way that the Founding Fathers contemplated its creation so many years ago. The need for the Second Amendment rose from the need of the American people to feel safe and secure in the country they had built on the idea of independence, and to have the means to defend themselves, their families, and their rights against all who might try to stand in the way of their freedom – including National Security. The Founding Fathers disliked the idea of large, powerful, standing armies, who had the ability to seize power from the unarmed American people and thrust America into government tyranny at any time – the same sort of government tyranny that they had just sailed across the ocean to escape.

The Second Amendment is making headlines these days. The Second Amendment states, A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. This Amendment was ratified in December of 1791. This amendment was proposed by James Madison, after the constitution was ratified. “James Madison originally proposed the Second Amendment shortly after the Constitution was officially ratified as a way to provide more power to state militias…” (Brooks, The Second Amendment and the Right to Bear Arms) The latest court case on the Second Amendment is the Peruta v. California “case”. But that was turned down the case. The Second Amendment is important because it provides self defense, enables U.S. citizens to hunt for food, and it allows for citizens of states in the U.S. to form militias.

Although the 2nd Amendment only contains one sentence, the interpretation of it can be misconstrued if the use of critical thought is not applied during the analysis. Supporters of gun control argue that the ambiguous language in the 2nd Amendment leads to confusion about the interpretation. That in itself warrants further discussion about rewriting the 2nd Amendment or simply eradicating it. Also, the provision is outdated and no longer coincides with the times. In regards to the addition of “well regulated militia,” guns were meant to protect people from tyranny and any form of militarized government suppression. The US constitution is the blueprint of many other constitutions around the world. Our constitution is the cornerstone of many other countries bill of rights, even if they don’t follow it word for word the inspiration is clearly visible. The 2nd amendment “the right to bear arms” is something that isn’t seen in many other constitutions, and in the US there is major debate on it ranging from the interpretation, if guns should be banned, should anyone be allowed a weapon no questions asked, it goes on and on with no end in sight. I feel the 2nd amendment should be modified to include gun regulations, because other amendments were changed and updated for current times, regulations will prevent guns from ending up in hands of criminals, and regulations will not stop law abiding citizens from owning a weapon. Adding some extra words to the 2nd amendment will end debate over little things, and make all reasonable people happy.

Although there are many people against the Second Amendment, one must understand that the constitution of the United States recognizes and safeguards rights that profoundly exist in the Bill of Rights. Does the second Amendment continued to be valid today? The answer is quite simple: yes, it does. Civilian or militia does no need to protect themselves from the government, since the government has strong armed forces to protect the state and the federal government. However, the right still remains valid and it is mostly used for protection of common criminals, since the police can take a long time to show up when needed; and it is also used for hunting and other recreational activities.

I don’t think there is a fix to this firearm issue. There are too many people that own firearms, and there is no way they are going to let that Amendment be changed. Even if the Second Amendment is removed from the Constitution, there are already too many guns out there. I will really like to know what the government is going to do about this. There guns murders and mass shutting keep increasing, and thing are getting out of hand. People are not going to have their guns taken away from them, and I understand that. They paid for those guns, and guns are not cheap. I don’t own a gun right now, but I’m sure I’ll probably buy one in the future.
