Shriner’s Hospital Clinical Experience Shriner’s Hospital for Children provides services and care to pediatric patients with orthopedic, burns, spinal cord injuries and other concerns in an ambulatory setting. And, I had the opportunity to observe how specialized care was delivered to pediatric patients and how the team prioritize and collaborate the individualized to each patient. In the orthopedic clinics (130), I have observed a doctor performed a focused physical examination on an eight-year-old (8) male patient with cerebral palsy. This patient had some neurological and physical deficits and had some developmental delays. He was accompanied by his caregiver and is wheel chair bound. He lacked the ability to verbally communicate, but used signs and signals to convey a message and he was still in diapers. The doctors who seen him checked his musculoskeletal functions thoroughly in preparation for a future surgical operation. His primary caregiver was interviewed and was very participative in the care. The doctors also have provided the caregiver all the information regarding the surgery and any other questions the primary caregiver had were answered. Post operation …show more content…
Most of the patients in the burns clinic have undergone surgery and came in for follow up, rehabilitation, and tissue expansion. Family dynamics were also discussed to determine the family’s needs for referral or health promotion teaching as well as emotional support. Overall, my experience at Shriner’s Hospital for Children was a great opportunity and it has helped me understand other aspects of nursing care. This experience has given me the opportunity to see the individualized and customized care provided for each patient that could change a child’s life for the
Witnessing the patience, strength, and compassionate attributions that nurses convey within their care was remarkable. Having the opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of another human being was a very overwhelming and humbling experience for me. Therefore, these encounters set the foundation towards my pursuit of a nursing career.
Pediatric physical therapists work to help disabled children and their families grow and become stronger every day. For about a century now, doctors have been making a valiant effort to improve the lives of children. Though it is not the most popular practice, pediatric physical therapy is certainly important to the lives of millions. Since the beginning of pediatrics, new discoveries are constantly being made. Pediatric physical therapy has been making ground breaking developments and progressions in all of its elements since it became popular in the 1920’s.
Cook Children’s has achieved accreditation by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education. This is important to me as it shows the quality and integrity of the residency program and I am assured that I will receive the best training and education available to me. I enjoy learning and I believe that a residency at Cook Children’s will allow me to stay up to date with nursing skills, policies, procedures, and give me an opportunity to further my education through my experiences. In the residency program, I will complete over 1,800 hours of individual clinical experience with a nurse preceptor. The amount of individual clinical hours ensures that I will be able to start my career with confidence that will help me further as a new graduate nurse. With the high achievements that Cook Children’s has obtained, I believe that I will have an outstanding platform to begin my nursing career that will aid me in becoming a nurse with the ability to continue to learn and grow in the profession. Upon completion of this residency I expect to have a solid foundation of pediatric nursing that I can build on. Cook Children’s has several values which include caring, safety, integrity, collaboration, innovation, and giving. I will demonstrate caring by listening to my patients and their families. I will be an advocate for patients and treat them holistically. I will try to minimize fears by explaining procedures to patients, keeping them updated on their treatment, and answering any
When she sees a patient for the first time she talks to them about the doctor’s report and asks specific questions about their injury or experiences leading up to the need for physical therapy. Megan explained how important it is to make the patient feel comfortable and keep a positive attitude towards the patient’s recovery. These consultations were the most interesting to sit in on because it allowed me to observe the therapist’s ability to take the patient’s information and create a diagnosis and treatment plan for the injury or pain described. Megan may have multiple patients at a time so she stressed the importance of keeping up with each patient and why the physical therapy techs are so helpful. Scheduling is another job of the therapists that is important in keeping the clinic running smoothly. There is also paperwork that has to be filled out for every patient after every visit about their
Time spent at my mother’s bedside in the intensive care unit changed my perception of the nursing profession. I realized what unique value was integrated in comprehensive nursing care, which was built on excellence, compassion, and respect. I knew right then and there that nursing was a professional path which I would like to take. Changing my college major to nursing was not a difficult decision – I wanted to repay for all that courteous care my family received in the most vulnerable time of our lives.
“Definition of a nurse: To go above and beyond the call of duty. The first to work and the last to leave. The heart and soul of caring. A unique soul who will pass through your life for a minute and impact it for an eternity. An empowered individual whom you may meet only for a 12-hour period, but who will put you and yours above theirs”-Anonymous. For the past year and a half, I have volunteered at Blaire E. Batson Children’s Hospital. It has been an amazing experience! My passion for the medical field and career of nursing has been magnified. I know without a doubt that nursing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I long for the opportunity to care for my future patients and their families. I want to touch other people’s lives just as I have witnessed nurses do throughout my time volunteering. God has given me a passion for nursing. With my passion and compassion for others, I know I will be successful if admitted into the BSN program.
As I begin my fifth year of working as a nurse practitioner in a leading children’s hospital, I am certain the pediatric acute care setting is where I will continue my career of service to children and their families. Although I hold a masters degree in nursing and have been a primary care certified pediatric nurse practitioner for many years, I wish to expand my knowledge of pediatric nursing to encompass the unique and challenging aspects of pediatric acute care.

As individuals and as a group, we have worked hard, we toiled, we endured, and we have come out better, with more passion and more confidence than when we began. We have survived all the different rotations, shifts, and calls, the sleepless nights and the chaos and adrenaline of the emergency room duty and the rigorous training examinations. I believe we are all proud to have made it to this day. In all sincerity, today represents a landmark achievement for each of us and our families. It is to our loved ones and all those who encouraged us through this long journey from preschool through residency that we owe our deepest thanks. The encouragement from family, friends, colleagues, faculty, staff and strangers have played a vital role in our success.

I did not know much about the health care field then but in that moment, I felt as if the health care system failed since the day he was born. This experience made me become eager to be a part of making a difference in the health care world. The lack of managed care caused the life of my nephew, and for this my passion for Science and the need of helping others only manifested because of my experience. My aspirations were to become a Registered Nurse and specialize in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In my early college years, I also became a part of the UCLA team through an internship program. UCLA Care Extenders allowed me to gain valuable knowledge. As an intern, I did clinical rotations and was able to discover what takes place behind closed doors. However, what lead me into
When I initially started planning this paper I was ecstatic to learn what the literature had proven effective for the Native American community and possibly my own people, the Navajo Nation. Since I was a little girl I pledged that I was going to help my people, in any way that I could when I grew up. My main drive behind my profession of choice isn’t for the money obviously, I grew up on the Navajo Reservation, and I have witnessed first hand the detrimental effects of alcohol abuse. My father was an alcoholic he died
Over the past seven years as a clinical nurse on the McKeen Pavilion (the medical-surgical amenities unit at New York Presbyterian/Columbia Medical Center), I have committed to excelling in a clinical bedside capacity, as well as a member of the NYP community. This combination has allowed me to be a true advocate for my patients, their families, and my colleagues. The unit has afforded me a tremendous amount of hands on nursing experience, as
Although I have experience working with children in a health-related environment I am still relatively new to the role of a nurse and would require more practice and learning regarding paediatric nursing. I hope that the knowledge and skills that I have now, aid in my growth and development as I transfer them from other areas of my life into my work experiences.
One of the first things that struck me right away after spending a day at Nemours was their belief in providing family-centered care. I immediately realized how important family-centered care was in the pediatric population, which is why I chose that to be my “AHA” moment. The illness of a child can have a traumatic effect on both families and the child. Most pediatric care facilities have adopted the philosophy of a family-centered care approach in order to
