The Importance of Being Beautiful Sidney Katz did do an effective job while discussing beauty vs. ugly in” The Importance of being beautiful.” One technique the author was effective in using is purpose. The authors’ purpose is to inform the audience about her opinion on how today’s society views beautiful people. In line twenty four the author states that “people like to think that success depends on talent, intelligence, and hard work, but the scientific evidence is undeniable.” This line signifies that what people believe about success is not necessarily true, and it is more to it than what people actually believe and it is also evidence to prove this theory. Another technique that the author is effective in is tone. The authors tone
Although, beauty is longing for it is not always beneficial to the beholder. For instance, McIntosh explains how “these varieties are only what one would want for everyone in a just society, and others give license to be ignorant, oblivious, arrogant, and destructive” (31). Sadly, I can relate to her feelings many people do not see beyond my looks and I often find myself becoming part of a stereo type. Many people believe that because I am attractive I wont have to work to be successful. Others express how I will probably end up marrying a wealthy man who is older.
Throughout his novel, Perfect Peace, Daniel Black focuses on the idea of feminine beauty and what it means to be a beautiful black woman or a pretty black girl. Black highlights the problematic nature that rigid internalized beauty standards can have on women well into their elderly years. Black uses both Emma Jean and Perfect’s characters, as well as addition characters such as Caroline and Eva Mae, to show the negativity associated with black beauty standards.
As a society, we are educated about appearance. About makeup and hair styling products and other things that enhance your looks. Through these things, the message that is portrayed is that unless you are attractive, you are not valuable as those who are. In my photography, I wanted to depict that even though you may be attractive, that attractiveness does not make you happy or fulfilled. Through reading Cyrano De Bergerac, I realized that your worth is determined by your values, Morales, and most importantly, you! If you believe that you do good things and are a good person then you should be truly happy with yourself and not worry about how you look on the outside. In Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. Cyrano is so distraught over his
Dr.Kesiraju Ramprasad said that “Beauty isn't about having a pretty face. It is having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and most importantly a beautiful soul”. However, truthful the Doctors quote may be, it is often not what is viewed as important in real life situations. In society, beauty
The Ugly Truth About Beauty by Dave Barry is a humorous essay, which uses techniques like satire including exaggeration, that gives the reader a funny yet accurate portrayal of women and their beauty standards compared to standards set for men. Barry uses satire, humor to criticize the faults of others, to connect with his audience. Although Barry loves to make funny points throughout his essay he constantly weaves in serious facts and examples of this issue. His use of satire in the essay makes the reading light and enjoyable while showing the reader the double standards of beauty.
"Beauty is in the eye the beholder. " Truer words have never been spoken, at least in the accounts of women like July Siebecker and Lucille Clifton. These are two women who defied what society portrays as "beauty" and perfection and decided that they were confident in their "imperfections". The notion that women have to be thin, have a light complexion, very little curves, and pristine features is a part of the beauty myth that has wreaked havoc on the female community for since the beginning of time. However, the pieces written by July and Lucille yielded the exact opposite of that.
The question of beauty has been asked since the beginning of time and yet there is still no precise answer. When discussing this same question and applying it to works of art a number of answers could be as large as the population. Henri Matisse and Francis Bacon have both inspired artists for generations and are considered to be opposite sides of the coin. Matisse created paintings with bright, happy colors mixing in patterns and showed life as it was viewed from the outside, leading to the idea that he created pretty paintings. On the other hand, Bacon produced intense paintings which included rich, dark colors that expressed the agony that can only be viewed from within oneself. When the viewer immerses themselves in both styles of painting it will be clear that art does not need to “be pretty”.
Beauty is said to be in the eyes of the beholder, but it is rather society that seems to dictate precisely what is beautiful and what is not. In a masterfully done and chilling episode of “The Twilight Zone”, they comment on what exactly is beauty, and how it is society that defines what is and what isn’t beauty (Serling). This episode of the Twilight Zone depicts a beautiful woman undergoing facial reconstruction surgery and emerging gorgeous by our standards, yet she is rejected by the doctors and nurses that surround her who are hideous to us. No matter how gorgeous a woman may be after her surgery, if she does not align with what is considered to be the norm, then she is ugly. This is especially damaging when false beauty advertisement is taken into account, and how that is the standard to which all women are compared.
It is unfortunate that we live in a society that places such a great emphasis and consideration towards the aesthetics of beauty. What is more
This article argues that physical appearance matters. In this society, children are being told lies and adults have trouble explain away the importance of physical appearance. This article gives an example of how a poor physical feature affected Robert Hoge’s life since birth. This article was written as an open discussion post. I will be using this source as an example of how physical attractiveness can affect one’s life.

A Woman’s Beauty: Put-Down or Power Source? Susan Sontag, a jewish-american writer, argues about how the external beauty influences the inner beauty. She starts giving a paradoxical and accurate example of Socrates, where she said that he was everything but beautiful and for the Greeks it was kind of contradictory because they had always thought that the inside beauty would be compatible with some other kind of beauty. According to the writer, people were used to say that a woman was beautiful depending on her inside and outside beauty, but we are also amazed “when someone who is beautiful is also intelligent and talented” (Sontag 387).
There is a cliché quote that people say, “Beauty is in the eye of beholder.” But in the essay “The Ugly Truth About Beauty” (1998) Dave Barry argues about how women who spend countless hours on their so called “beauty” whereas men seem not to care. Barry uses juxtaposition and exaggeration to poke fun at men and women behavior and shed light on the harm that the beauty industry is doing. When Barry argues his point of his essay he addresses both genders, but more specifically teenage to middle age men and women, but he writes about it in a humorous and light-hearted manner.
Beauty sets standards for society through appearance, especially in younger generations due to use of social media and picture editing. “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder” is a saying that has been around for ages (Plato, n.p.). It is an accurate phrase because of contrasting views within particular individuals. Beauty is present in the good deeds of community members as well as the unity exhibited through dreadful events. It is a flower bud breaking through the dirt into the fresh, spring air. To clarify how beauty is viewed, it is often times the exposure of evil accounting for the new appreciation of something beautiful. After recognizing the privileges we acquire, the existence of beauty is revealed and expressed more easily. In current society, appreciating beauty is substantial to
What is beauty? How do we decide who is attractive and who is not? Society is full of information telling us what is beautiful, but what fact is that information based on? The topic of beauty has been studied, analyzed and controversial for centuries. We all know the feeling you can have when you hear a beautiful song that brings joy to your heart, stand in a field of flowers that excites your eyes, or admire a face that is visually pleasing. As human beings, we are all drawn to beauty, but what is it that makes something beautiful? The controversial issue that surrounds beauty is that some believe that true beauty is defined by someone’s outer appearance, while others believe it is something that is experienced through a person’s
