The significant internal conflict that George has is that he feels he is somewhat isolating himself from the world and the humiliation that came after his awakening of being used by Belle. “I myself must be orderly. I must learn that law. I must get myself into touch with something orderly and big that swings through the night like a star. In my little way, I must begin to learn something, to give and swing and work with life, with the law” (111). This was the biggest awakening that he had in this chapter. As he walked alone, he realized that the world was based on orders and thought that he should follow the orders that world is following, basically meaning that he should live like others live. “In the past when he had been with her and had
George was completely devastated, having just killed his best friend. However he wouldn’t of had to take that route, if he had not strayed from his responsibilities in the first
emotional strain upon George that he could not accept. Celia was his lover…yet he could not
To start off with, George had an ultimate goal and that was to own his own piece of land, with his own crops, with his own animals. He knew it sounded crazy
Throughout the novel, George showed qualities of leadership, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, sense of fraternity, sense of respect for others, and sense of human dignity. These character traits of empathy to keep himself and Lennie alive. Lennie had a mental disability that everyone overlooked, he was very tall and broad, and did not realize his actions or strength. George felt guilt over Curley’s wife death and was unsure if the law would find
George has a great want to have the ideal American Dream. There are several examples of him having this desire one cases is ‘“Someday-gonna get the jack together and gonna have a little house and couple of arcres an’a cow and some pigs’”(Steinbeck 14). George is talking about him buying a house with a few acres of land and also acquiring cows and being able to live off the land. George wants to be able to quit work and make his own crops and harvest his own. Wanting to be able to go into town and not have to worry about how much anything costs or having to go to work the next day on someones elses ranch. Not having to do other people's work but his own work
Everyone has a dream. We need to make a lot of effort to achieve our dreams. In the process of realizing our dream, we will encounter many difficulties and setbacks. Many different factors will affect the final result. In the book, The Pact by Drs.
George is one of people in the ranch that had big goals to achieve, but he couldn’t accomplish any of them because of Lennie. George taking care of Lennie affects his dreams in a big way because every time George gets closer to his dreams Lennie completely ruins it. In the story it states George saying “ dumb bastard likes to touch everything he likes”(steinbeck 41). This is very important because this shows how childish lennie acts. The most important thing to him was to have dreams to have a farm and his own place with Lennie. This quote “ we got a future “ (Pg . 14) shows that he had a dream worth living for. Another way George had gotten his dreams taken away was when Lennie killed their boss’s wife. I know that George was a very lonely person because in the story he talks about guys like him in the ranch . “ guys like us , that work on a ranch are the loneliest guys in the world” (Pg . 13). This is very important because it shows his feelings towards being lonely.
One internal conflict that George is dealing with is that he has to keep on looking out for Lennie, even though he knows he would be better off without Lennie. For example, George says, God almighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble,” (Steinbeck, page 11). George faces the internal conflict of deciding if it is really worth George to look after Lennie. All Lennie does for George is cause him trouble. George could start a brand new life, way more successful than now, without Lennie. But he decides to stay with Lennie because to Lennie George means everything to him. If Lennie didn't have George, who knows where he would be. This shows George as a complex character because the audience sees the real two sides of George. Outside George may seem as a tough independent person. But really on the inside George is a very caring person that is a father figure for Lennie. The audience sees George’s
Think about the irony behind this situation. We have discussed the theme of “isolation” and how it relates to each of the characters. Think about the way George treated Lennie when they were kids. Explain how George’s internal conflict about Lennie contributes to his own isolation. Also, include other ways in which George is isolated in the text. George and Lennie are the main characters in the novel which made every decision they made affect other characters in the novel. George is presented in the book Of Mice and Men as a brutal man. He shows in the passage that he is easily set off; that he has a high temper. George does feel at times he is better and can accomplish more. George is strict and stubborn throughout the film; even though his mood may change his actions do not. One would think George would undergo a change at the end of the film when he has his family against him, but no signs suggest that George has completely changed.
