Silver Linings Playbook and Bipolar Disorder. Silver Linings Playbook is a film premiering in 2012, featuring a man named Pat, who was just getting out of a mental institution for almost beating the man his wife was having an affair with to death. Soon after returning home he meets a woman, Tiffany, recently widowed with a bad reputation around town from sleeping with everybody in her office. Tiffany knows Pat’s wife, and since she has a strict restraining order against him, offers to deliver a letter to her in exchange for him being her partner in a dance competition she is passionate about. Though the movie primarily focuses on Pat, and his personal struggle with bipolar disorder, it shows the mental disorders of many other characters throughout the film. Pat’s father is extremely OCD about football. Through his superstitions, he ends up making a bet for just about all the money they have and loses, so they partake in a parlay, double or nothing. They bet that Philadelphia will beat Dallas, and that Pat and Tiffany will score at least a 5 at the competition. Nikki, Pat’s wife, ends up going to the competition like he had hoped, his one last chance to win her back. They win the bet, and they score exactly a 5.0. At first, Pat goes straight to Nikki and talks to her, everything looks as if it worked out perfectly, and then Tiffany leaves. Pat chases her down and reveals that he loves her, and has officially moved on from Nikki. Bipolar Disorder: Background Information
In the opening scene of The Silver Linings Playbook (2012) the main character, Pat, was just being released from a court-ordered stay at a psychiatric hospital. After finding his wife cheating on him, with their wedding song playing in the background, Pat reacted by aggressively assaulting the other man. Unfortunately, because of this incident, Pat lost his job, his wife obtained a restraining order against him, and he was about to be sent to jail. However, rather going to jail, he took a plea bargain that sentenced him to eight months in a psychiatric hospital.
The Silver Linings Playbook is an American comedy-drama film written and directed by David O' Russell, which was adapted from the novel “The Silver Linings Playbook” written by Matthew Quick. This is a story of a mentally ill man who had bipolar disorder played by one of the famous American actor; Bradley Cooper. In this movie, Bradley Cooper is known by the movie name Pat. After returning back from a psychiatric institution, Pat moves back to his parent’s house to learn how to live a normal life without his former wife who has left him, but he determined to win back his estranged wife. However, Pat meets a recently widowed Tiffany Maxwell, who lost her husband on car accident and that character was portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence, who promise
In the movie Silver Linings Playbook, directed by David O. Russel and made in 2012, there are many techniques used to portray a certain theme. Since the film is about a character named Pat and his struggle with Bipolar Disorder, a lot of the techniques used are to accentuate different moods for him. Some of the tactics for creating the film were, the use of editing and cuts to depict the way Pat was feeling, filming in foreground for most conversations, and the use of the trash bag whenever he would go running as a costume.
Food and Drug Association agents on one side, desperately sick people on the other. Anyone would normally think these two groups would be on the same page but this was the scene for many buyers’ clubs around the nation in the late 80’s and early 90’s as the HIV/AIDS crisis took ahold of America and what inspired the movie Dallas Buyers Club. The movie is based on the story of AIDS patient Ron Woodroof, who was described as “handsome, in a Texas dumb hick white trash kinda way” by his transgender sidekick, Rayon, and his pursuit to live despite the fact that the only drug approved by the FDA to fight AIDS is actually killing patients. The growth of buyers’ clubs proves that in a time where AIDS victims
Silver Linings Playbooks tells the story of Pat Solitano Jr. (played by Bradley Cooper), a high school teacher diagnosed with bipolar disorder who is trying to get his life back together. The movie opens as Pat is released from a psychiatric hospital after eight months of treatment and moves back in with his parents. He is determined to get back together with his wife, Nikki, despite all the signs that say she does not want to be with him - such as the restraining order she filed against him. Pat meets recently widowed Tiffany Maxwell (played by Jennifer Lawrence), who is suffering from depression and overcoming a sex addiction that ensued from the death of her husband. Tiffany offers to help deliver Pat’s letters to Nikki if
In the movie Silver Linings Playbook, we follow Pat Solitano Jr., a man recently released from a mental institution (Cohen et al., 2012). He is a Caucasian male, likely in his early to mid-thirties and of Italian descent. He was a high school history teacher, living with his wife, Nikki, an English teacher. Upon finding his wife in the shower with another man, he nearly beats the man to death leading him to be sent to a psychiatric facility for eight months with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. In this essay I will support the diagnosis of a Bipolar I disorder. A diagnosis of Bipolar I disorder, has specific criteria in the DSM-V that have to be met. I will be listing the criteria and through examples of Pat’s actions, thoughts and behaviours, he meets the criteria.
During the film Silver Linings Playbook many of the characters had extensive anger issues or could not maintain their anger well in their daily lives (Russell, 2012). Pat had anger issues, Pat’s dad also had anger problems, Pat’s friend Ronnie has anger problems and Tiffany is working on controlling all of her emotions not just anger. These four characters are the main reason it seemed practical for a self management group. Many of them are balancing lots of stress and dealing with it through anger or other ill-advised avenues. This group would be mostly a support group, but also a therapy group so clients could learn how to deal with their current problems and add some more balance into their lives. It would be a support group because the goals are obviously to talk about existing problems while using current positive coping skills (Toseland & Rivas, 2012). However, it would also be a therapy group because the goal is to take away coping skills that have only caused more problems and replace them with better ones.
A life interchanging from high to low, happy to sad, to the brink of exploding with euphoria to the lowest low, is the life of a human living with Bipolar disorder. This roller coaster of emotions is inevitable and almost unlikely to cure in terms of later onset. Living with any personality disorder puts strain and hardship on your loved ones and is more then anyone would want to deal with in their short lifetime. These disorders are more common than we know and the way they are treated will determine the individual’s psychological outcome. The movie “Silver Linings Playbook” does a great job depicting a character with Bipolar disorder and the struggles the main character Pat faces on a day-to-day basis through his road to recovery.

12 years a Slave is a film that claims to be historically correct instead it is a film that disguises itself to be historically correct when in fact it is not. Instead it is jam packed with false facts portraying historical inaccuracy failing to make a real statement instead it only made people more hesitant wanting to ignore the topic of slavery altogether. The portrayal of disturbing images that occurred throughout the film only display a dehumanizing system leaving the viewer only in discomfort due to shocking scenes of brutality and violence.
