‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald belongs to one of the most celebrated and intriguing novels of all time; it is considered a literary masterpiece of the twentieth century. The story follows the enigmatic Long Island billionaire Jay Gatsby, who is, after years, still besotted with Daisy Buchanan and wishes to reunite. The reader becomes familiar with Gatsby’s character through the eyes of 29-year-old narrator Nick Carraway, who appears to not only be Gatsby’s new neighbor, but also Daisy’s relative. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby was born into a life of poverty and as he grew up he became more aware of the possibility of a better life. He created fantasies that he was too good for his modest life and that his parents weren’t his own. When he met Daisy, a pretty upper class girl, his life revolved around her and he became obsessed with her carefree lifestyle. Gatsby’s desire to become good enough for Daisy and her parents is what motivates him to become a wealthy, immoral person who is perceived as being sophisticated.

In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson have many similarities and many differences. Both women are unhappy with their lives, both are greedy, but both women live very different lives. Both Myrtle and Daisy are unhappy with their lives and try to escape from them. Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson are also very greedy people in similar, but also in different ways. These women do whatever they want at the risk of their own lives as well as other people’s lives. In The Great Gatsby, “Everything Stuck To Him”, and The “Jilting of Granny Weatherall” all these stories are good examples of the human condition love and how it blinds us on our sense of reasoning or causing us pain. In The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, F. Scott, Gatsby gets blinded by his love for Daisy and takes blame for an action he didn’t do. In another story “Everything Stuck to Him” by Carver, Raymond the boy is faced with a big problem choosing his love for his family or going hunting with an old friend. “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Porter, Katherine Anne shows that love is tragic when granny is on her deathbed and remembers her ex who left her at the alter.

In chapter two of The Great Gatsby, Nick chats with Tom, Myrtle, Catherine, and the McKees while drinking excessively. Matters begin to escalate quickly when Myrtle begins talking about Daisy in a snobbish manner, triggering Tom’s emotions. The actions of Tom reveal his appalling treatment of women through pure violence, portrayed through the kinesthetic imagery of the fight. Furthermore, the jab makes Tom seem immature and abusive towards people. He instills faux traits to others, making him appear decent, but carries immorality instead. The traits become exemplified by the intense image produced of him pounding Myrtle for something miniscule. The Great Gatsby, and it gives us an insight into the gender roles of past WW1 America. Throughout the novel, women are portrayed in a very negative light. The author’s presentation of women is unflattering and unsympathetic. The women are not described with depth. When given their description, Fitzgerald appeals to their voice, “ she had a voice full of money”, their looks “her face was lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes, and a bright passionate mouth”, and the way in which they behave, “ ’They’re such beautiful shirts’ she sobbed”, rather than their feelings or emotions, for example, Daisy is incapable of genuine affection, however she is aimlessly flirtatious.

The movie adaptation and the book had many discrepancies in placement and content. In the 2000 film it immediately starts off with Gastby being shot which Fitzgerald did not do. The 2013 movie starts with Nick Carraway speaking with a therapist, but Fitzgerald starts the book off with Carraway talking about himself and Gatsby. In the book, it thoroughly portrays Daisy as a shallow and self centered person but, the Leonardo DiCaprio adaptation only touches on her a couple of times. In the newer movie Wolfshiem has molar on his tie, but in the book and 2000 movie he has molar cufflinks.

When a person’s greatest hope does not come true, it can not only leave them stuck and unsure what to do with their lives, but cause emotional damage as well. Putting all the eggs in one basket means that if the person loses the basket, he or she loses everything they essentially live for as well. Obviously, this leaves him or her in the lowest depths of despair. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald once again uses the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy, this time to demonstrate how much hurt a broken dream can cause. Within the first hours of being reunited with his former love, Gatsby begins to suspect that the situation will not fall perfectly into place the way he imagined. Nick, after attending this awkward reunion, reflects, “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams -- not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything... No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart” (103). Although Daisy still appears as beautiful and charming as ever, Gatsby’s false image of her after several lonely years expands so much larger than life that the real Daisy plainly disappoints Gatsby. Fitzgerald strongly warns against the pitfalls of hope - once a person fixates on an idea, such as Gatsby did, reality cannot compete with the power the idea has over the person, leading to a delusional and unsatisfactory life in actuality.

Love is the greatest gift God could give to mankind. Its’ sole intention is to bring people together to a time called forever. However, love is the reason behind Daisy Buchanan and Clarissa Dalloway’s unhappiness in life. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan is married to a man named Tom, but her heart belongs to a man named Gatsby. Similarly, in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa Dalloway is in love with a man named Peter, however is married to a man named Richard. Both women give up their true love in order to marry a wealthy man, and subsequently live a life full of doubt.

The relationship with Daisy Buchanan and Tom Buchanan is filled with betrayal and abuse. Tom cheated on Daisy with Myrtle and Daisy cheated on Tom with Gatsby. Tom emotionally and physically abuses Daisy with his control. Tom’s abuse is shown when Daisy says, “You did it, Tom, I know you didn 't mean to, but you did do it.” (Fitzgerald 12) Daisy stays with Tom for security and comfort that Gatsby could not provide. They are so wealthy that they put blame on others and retreat back to their money to keep them safe. This is shown when Tom and Daisy leave without a trace once Gatsby took the blame for killing Myrtle.
