The Fences written by August Wilson and Death of a Salesman was written by Arthur Miller are two plays that can be considered different in terms of their plot. Both plays have two very different cultural backgrounds. The background affects each protagonist therefore differently. However, there are also similarities beyond the plot. Despite the different backgrounds of each protagonist or main characters, they are both trying to achieve their dreams. They both fail ironically in similar ways .Willy Loman in the death of a salesman and Troy Maxson are both hardworking men trying very hard to help their families . They strive very hard to be successful, yet they die in the end feeling they did not earn the respect they deserved.

Willy and Troy both fail to achieve the American Dream due to the distorted ways with which they define success and go about attaining it.

In Death of a Salesman the main characters are Willy Loman, Linda Loman, and Biff and Happy Loman. In Fences the main characters are Troy Maxson, Rose Maxson and Cory Maxson. All these characters relate because they both have a similar idea of the American Dream.

People could have learned certain characteristics from a family member and this may lead them to act just like them. However, some people have pointed out that they feel Willy and Biff still do not have enough in common with each other. This may be the case; however, it lacks the evidence. Biff and Willy hate each other and complain and criticize each other because of all the things that they have in common.
