Civil Liberties and Civil Rights Civil Liberties and Civil rights are often mistaken to be identical because they are closely related and similar.
The rights and liberties that have been established in the United States defines us and separates us from every other country. 1 As Americans, our Civil Liberties concern our basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution or interpreted over the years by legislatures or the courts. 2 According to Findlaw.com, our Civil Rights concern the basic right to be free from unequal treatment based on certain protected characteristics depending on the setting. Civil Liberties and Civil Rights deal with the same freedoms, but Civil Rights is the protection of those freedoms. For example, a Civil Liberty would be our right to marry, and gay marriage would be a Civil Rights matter. Therefore, Civil Liberties are the basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to Americans, whereas the civil rights are more about the protection of those specific rights depending on what right and who’s right.
3 At this point in my life, the civil sequence that has more influence on me, is my Civil Liberties. I am not at a point where I am in settings such as housing and employment. So my Civil Rights aren’t necessarily occurring in my current status as a high school student, as they will in a few years when I am an independent. But the freedom of religion that comes from my Civil Liberties is very prominent in my life
