Similarities Between New England And Middle Colonies

There are similarities and differences of the geography of New England and Southern colonies. The South had mild, rainy winters and long hot humid summers. This means,the South could grow many crops. According to “A Virginia Plantation,” the south had lots of plantations with tobacco and corn (Doc 6). However, New England had long cold winters and a short growing season. This means New England did not grow as many crops as the South. Instead, many colonists had small farms for their family or community. Therefore, the differences in geography helped to shape the development of the New England and Southern regions.

Creating a New World has to start somewhere, even if it means it began separated between three different colonies. The New England colonies included Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, it was established in the early 1620’s by a religious group, the Puritans.The southern colonies included Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, Virginia was the first successful Southern colony and was established in the early 16th century. These colonies shared their similarities but also had a lot of differences.

One might think that all of the British colonies in the new world were all the same. This is not the case though. The colonies, although they were all British they had some similarities but mainly they had differences. The Southern, New England and Middle colonies clearly show theses similarities and differences, particularly in terms of land, labor, religion, and native relations.

The colonies in the New World appeared completely different and the prospect of any unity between them seemed impossible. The colonies in New England and the Chesapeake exemplify the many differences in the culture and lifestyles of the settlers, created mainly because of the fact that their founding fathers had held separate intentions when they came to the New World.

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were an exciting period of time for the thirteen British colonies that would eventually become The United States of America. This time period saw the development of the colonies into self-sufficient entities, which would ultimately lead to the American Revolution. Although every colony was unique, there were similarities in the colonies that were close to each other geographically. Today, the colonies are grouped together into the New England colonies, the Middle colonies, and the Southern colonies. The New England, Middle, and Southern colonies had both similarities and differences regarding their political, economic, social, and religious

New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, but by the 1700’s they were two distinct societies. They differed politically, economically, and socially, and these differences stemmed from when people first arrived in the colonies to how the colonies grew over time.

Although the Chesapeake and New England colonies were the earliest English colonies to flourish in the New World, they were both extremely different in the ways that they developed. Similarities between the colonies can be found, but the colonies were mostly different. The colonies differed most in religion, society, culture, economy, and their relationships with the American Indians of the region. The reasons for such differences can be understood by realizing that the colonies were settled by incredibly different people who possessed different cultures, religious beliefs, and motivations for settling in their respective colonies in the first place. The Chesapeake and New England colonies had similarities and differences in their development, including how each colony affected nearby American Indians. Their differences and similarities can be understood by analyzing each colony’s geography, economy, religions, and cultures.

Some of the most populous colonies were the ones situated in the Chesapeake and New England areas. Although these colonies were both settled by the English and had other key similarities, there were also many differences between them. The New England and Chesapeake colonies both had an aristocracy that governed over them, and had frequent issues concerning the Native Americans that previously inhabited the lands. However, their political and economic systems were considerably different. Chesapeake had an oligarchy whose main export was tobacco, while New England had a theocracy whose exports included timber, fur, and fish. Therefore, although the colonies had similarities their differences outweighed the resemblances.

America was a place for dreams and new beginnings, until white people arrived in 1607. Three groups sailed over the treacherous Atlantic from their cruel lives in England to set up peaceful religious colonies. The only problem is that they attempted to settle in their own way and all failed dismally. The New England, Middle and Southern Colonies grew differently over the period 1619-1760.Examining the three sets of colonies will prove that they were all different: socially, economically, politically but not philosophically.

In the New World, various resources, climates, and considerable amounts of land allowed numerous opportunities for settlers. Those who once yearned to climb the social ladder or gain the freedoms bestowed from land ownership flocked toward the newfound settlements. Colonization proved to be a grueling task; however, success was found after adapting to the new environment and facing many hardships. Two colonies established early in the seventeenth century included Virginia and New England. Both Virginia and New England were forerunning settlements that differed in the following senses: political, social, and economical.

Colonies, colonies, we all should know that a colony is a region of land that is under the political control of another country. According to the passage, "the colonies began with the founding of Jamestown until the beginning of the Revolutionary War." The author explains, that there is are 13 colonies divided into three groups, Northern, southern and middle. The reason for this is that they all have idiosyncratic backgrounds. The New England (Northern), Southern, and Middle colonies are different, particularly in terms of land, labor, religion, native relations, and etc. The colonies, although they were all British they had some similarities, but mainly they had differences.

In 1607 a group of English settlers built village in Jamestown, Virginia. King Jaime I of England founded a colony in the first seven months after its arrival. Within these colonies we find the New England colonies and South Carolina colonies. We will analyze and compare the government systems, religious and economic development of both colonies and how they were related.

1. There were several main differences among the British colonial regions. The New England colonies being colonized mainly for religion while the Middle colonies found wealth through industry, whereas the Southern colonies sought more trade and wealth opportunities through colonization. Economically, the New England colonies did not have trade as their primary focused, but still were involved in the processes of fishing, lumbering, and trapping, the Middle colonies found their wealth in lumbering and shipbuilding; the Southern colonies sought to grow and trade cash crops for wealth. The Northern colonies composed of [Separatist] Pilgrims, Puritans, and Quakers had more religious reasons for being founded, but not limited to refuge from religious persecution, and a holy society or “city upon a hill.” The Northern colonies were also religiously self-governing; one example being the Mayflower Compact, while the South had regular laws instituted. Demographically, the colonies started with an overwhelming white population over the blacks, but as the tobacco industry grew and slavery became an increasing practice, blacks began to outnumber the white population.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, many English colonists settled into colonies in America, otherwise known as the “New World”. There were many reasons to do so, whether it be for economic benefit or to avoid religious persecution. These original 13 colonies began developing fast with the help from the English, growing population wise and government wise. Two specific areas included the New England and Chesapeake colonies. The Chesapeake colonies included Maryland and Virginia, while the colonies of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and the Massachusetts Bay colony were part of the New England colonies. These two colonial societies shared a few similarities regarding the development of their religion and economy, they also had a few differences.

The English colonies had different political structure, population size, and reasons for colonizing in the New World. Although the colonists were all British descent, their societies were completely dissimilar. Some ultimately left power in the hands of the church while others became royal colonies where the governor holds control. Northern colonies had a population that was not as spread out as the other colonies in the New World. And finally, those who ventured over from the Old World were either persecuted or wanted to expand Britain’s empire. These differences eventually lead to the development of distinct societies.
