A woman, in Shakespearean England, was made to be a trophy for men to win. Just as they are in his plays, Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew, both Juliet and Katharina go through changes in their attitudes that are for the better or worse. Shakespeare takes these characters and shows the audience what happens to women who don’t meet the standards of society. Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, who was pregnant at the time, to make sure that she would not be shunned. Hathaway was born to be married off to a man, so she would have been society’s ideal woman. Therefore, based on Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare’s ideal woman would meet society’s expectations. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is betrothed to Paris after Tybalt’s death. Once Juliet is informed of this, she refuses to marry him. This …show more content…
/ But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly” (Romeo and Juliet I.IV. 103-105). When her mother asks her about marriage, Juliet replies that she’ll love whatever husband her parents get her. However, since she married Romeo without her parent’s consent, her desirable qualities start to disappear. First with her attitude, then with her life. Juliet died because she disobeyed her parents and the will of her supposed future husband. In Taming of the Shrew, Katharina learns to be obedient to her new husband and she gets rewarded with his politeness. After Petruchio ‘tames’ her, she teaches her sister and others what a wife should be. Katharina says, “And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour, / And not obedient to his honest
In Romeo and Juliet there is a strong similarity to the movie Shrek. In the play Romeo in Juliet there is a girl who is going to be marrying a man who is much older than she is but, Juliett does not want to marry him. Meanwhile before the marriage, Juliet finds a boy by the name of Romeo in her backyard also he has a hidden love for her. When Juliet sees Romeo they talk, then fall in love, a forbidden love. Soon the couple get married and live with each other forever.
He starts out saying she does not have to marry him if she does not like him, but then he forces her to marry him. He forces her to marry Paris because Juliet has had enough time to choose a man to marry. Also he forces her to marry him because Paris and Lord Capulet have become good friends. When you force someone to do something they will do anything to not have to do it. When he forced Juliet to marry Paris , she will do anything to not marry him. Even if it means dying or faking her death.("DBQ: Romeo and Juliet: Who's to Blame". Doc.
Juliet is Lord Capulet’s only daughter and only child, making him really strict about who she marries. At first, Lord Capulet gave Juliet the choice of whether she wanted to marry Paris or not. Lord Capulet thought that Paris would be a great man for his only daughter to marry because of his social status, his wealth, and his relation to the Prince. Later in the play, without regard to Juliet’s feelings Lord Capulet forced Juliet to marry Paris and when Juliet disagreed, he yelled at her,“Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!/ I tell thee what: get thee to church o' Thursday,/Or never after look me in the face” (3.5 160-162). Lord Capulet hates the Montagues, Juliet could not have told him that she was already married to his enemy’s son. Lord Capulet in this quote gave Juliet an ultimatum: either she marries Paris or he disowns her. Because Lord Capulet said this and made the decision that Juliet will marry Paris, Juliet went to the Friar to find a solution. The solution that ended up with her in the tomb where she killed herself. Tybalt was Lord Capulet’s nephew, his death made Lord Capulet emotional and caused his outburst at Juliet. Before being in grief, Lord Capulet thought that Juliet was too young to be married. Nonetheless his emotions and rash decisions led to his daughter’s death. After Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment, Juliet was extremely depressed and would not stop crying. Thinking that it was only because of Tybalt’s death that Juliet is so upset, Lord Capulet changed the wedding date: “I’ll have this knot knit up [Wednesday] morning” (4.2 21-22). Friar Lawrence scheduled the plan to happen on Thursday, but since the wedding was moved up a day, it was ruined. Romeo did not receive the letter explaining the plan in time because there was not enough time to deliver it. Instead, Romeo was told that Juliet was dead from Balthasar. Because Romeo could not live without
Juliet did not want to marry Paris for Juliet was married to Romeo. Juliet Decided to go to the Friar for help but to get help she threaten to kill herself. The Friar decided to give Juliet a potion that would lower her breathing rate and pulse which would make her look dead. When Romeo heard about Juliet's death he goes to Verona to kill himself and be with her in the tomb. When Romeo is in Verona at the Capulet tomb Paris sees Romeo and goes to kill him Romeo for Romeo is banished.
At first, Lord Capulet wants Juliet to decide if she wants Paris. Then later, Capulet wants cheer Juliet up, after her cousin Tybalt dies. He decides to arrange a marriage between her and Paris. Juliet is actually more upset over her husband, Romeo, for being banished. Later, Lady Capulet breaks the news to Juliet about her marriage to Paris and Juliet is very unhappy. Lady Capulet tells Lord Capulet about her reaction and he gets very angry. Capulet gets into a big argument with Juliet. He threatens Juliet that she will marry Paris or die on the streets ( Act III, Scene V, Lines 160 - 195). Juliet’s parents and even her servant, who helped marry Romeo, really want her to marry Paris. Juliet, becoming desperate to stop her marriage, goes to Friar Lawrence and they make up a risky plan. This plan ultimately leads to her and Romeo’s
However, before their wedding night Romeo kills Juliet's cousin in a duel, and in the morning he is forced to leave her. If he ever returns to the city, he will be put to death, as he is banished. Juliet is then told she must marry Paris, who has been chosen by her parents, who do not know she is already married. She refuses - then agrees because she plans to fake her death and escape to be with Romeo.
This does not allow Juliet to make her own decision. An example of this is when Lady Capulet reinforces the plan in which Paris would be Juliet's husband, rather than letting Juliet choose who she marries. Lady Capulet speaks for Juliet when she says “marry, my child, early next Thursday morn.” Having little to no knowledge aforetime about this news, Juliet is utterly astonished. Lady Capulet continues by saying “[the] young and noble gentleman, the county Paris... shall happily make thee there a joyful bride” (III.v.112-115). After having already prepared her life with Romeo, Juliet is in disbelief that her mother would not attempt to step into her father's plan. Juliet lashes back at her mother by saying “I will not marry yet” and threatening that she would marry Romeo “whom you know I hate” rather than Paris (III.v.115-122). The lack of communication between the two characters makes them distant from one another, and the little effort provided by Lady Capulet to approach her daughter is the main reason for this occurrence. The control Lady Capulet has over different characters and her
Even though Lord Capulet had originally said that it would be Juliet’s choice whether or not she would want to marry Paris, Lord Capulet goes back on his word and gives Juliet no choice.
Juliet’s parents’ lack of knowledge of their daughter’s love life contributes to her death. In Act 3 Scene 5 Lady Capulet walks in on Juliet crying and assumes the tears are for her deceased cousin Tybalt. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony while Lady Capulet and Juliet speak about Romeo. Juliet says to her mother “Indeed, I shall never be satisfied / With Romeo, till I behold him –dead” The reader knows, while Lady Capulet is unaware, that Juliet is speaking about him in a loving way rather than wishing him dead. Also in this scene Lady and Lord Capulet tell Juliet that they have arranged for her to marry Paris. When Juliet refuses her father yells at her and accuses her of being ungrateful. The Capulets are not aware that Juliet is already married therefore are not understanding of her wishes to
However, Juliet starts to show strength and intelligence that can be interpreted as a sort of passive resistance that at the end of the play ends her life. In Act II, scene iv, Juliet goes against the wishes of her father and marries Romeo. The morning after their wedding night Juliet learns that her father has moved the day of her wedding with Paris to Thursday in an attempt to make Juliet happy and to try and get her to stop mourning her cousin Tybault’s death. (Romeo killed Tybault the night of their wedding in his friend Mercutio’s honor.) Juliet is appalled and rejects this by saying, “I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear /
In other words, if Juliet agrees to marry Paris then Lord Capulet will give his blessing. Despite Lord Capulet’s harsh words towards Juliet, Lady Capulet does not comfort Juliet in any way the one time Juliet needs her mother the most, and calls out to say “O, sweet my mother, cast me not away! Delay this marriage for a month, a week….” (DBQ Project Who’s to Blame, Document D), but Lady Capulet replies to Juliet with “Talk not to me, for I’ll not speak a word: Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee.” (DBQ Project Who’s to Blame, Document D)
Juliet was soon enough able to get him to comeback to her. Last but not least, Juliet's parents forced her to marry Paris. Since she is already married to Romeo and truly loves him and not Paris, it is a problem. She avoids the marriage by taking a potion
Second, when Juliet was asked about marriage and when she wanted to be wedded, she told her parents she had no interest in marrying, and she thought she was too young. “Marry, that 'marry' is the very theme I came to talk of.—Tell me, daughter Juliet, How stands your disposition to be married? It is an honor that I dream not of.”(1.3.68-71) This is the first time Juliet is asked about marriage, and she clearly makes it known that she is not interested. Out of nowhere, Capulet arranges the marriage of Juliet and Paris on Thursday. Juliet says she does not want to be married to Paris, and says that she will not truly be happy. Lord Capulet does not like what Juliet says, and gets very angered with her. He even goes on to say that she is not welcome under his roof if she doesn’t marry him. Without having any support from her parents, Juliet feels very alone. First, she does not want to get married to Paris, and second, she is in love with a Montague. This is all frowned upon from both families, and the only people Juliet seems to trust are Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse. Unfortunately, Nurse even suggests she marry Paris, so the only people she feels are on her side are Friar Lawrence and Romeo. When Romeo and Juliet decide to take their own lives, the fact that they didn't have many other people besides themselves made suicide more appealing to them. They were desperate to be with each other.
Throughout the story, Juliet proves her ability to overcome obstacles as she begins to take control of her destiny and no longer lives in the shadows of her parents. Because of her love for Romeo, she is deserted by her father, mother, and nurse. She is almost completely alone when Romeo is exiled. But she refuses to turn back; she won’t forget about Romeo and embrace Paris in marriage as her parents’ desire.
Themes are everywhere in a story like Romeo and Juliet, but a story with comparable themes is like a classic being redone. This other story, A Rat’s Tale has similar themes with their books showing their readers life lessons taught in the story’s. My first theme I’m going to call out in both these stories was when both the families in the end of the stories combined into one instead being in hatred for so many years. The lesson that was taught in this situation is that so many years of hatred on so one can lead to so much drama that you and and that one thing can become non-rivalries between each other. Another life lesson taught in both these stories was that people sometimes become in love with another to fast that they don’t get to know
