What do you do to occupy your time? For many reading a book or watching a movie are favorite pass times. Both tell stories that's intriguing and offer a stimulus to the mind. In modern day where movies are favorable, why do people still read books? Books and movies share their similarities, but there are differences that make the reader still want to pick up a book.
To begin books and movies are similar because they both tell a story. Essentially they tell the same story while keeping the protagonist, supporting characters, and settings the same. For example, The Great Gatsby is a dramatic romance story both in the film and the Novel. Both provide a sense of a fantasy; where the consumer of the film or book can escape there reality. The two
The Great Gatsby is a novel which critically discusses the ideals of the American Dream and recapturing the past. In the film adaptation, producer Jack Clayton stays very closely to the plot and even quotes the novel verbatim but fails to capture the essence of the themes portrayed in the novel. The text did not translate well into film; some facts are distorted, the depiction of the characters are different, the general ambience of certain settings do not match, and the movie is weighted towards the beginning of the book, with half of the movie based closely on the first two chapters of the book.
“What is better, the book or movie?” a commonly asked question by many individuals who are curious to know one’s opinion on a novel or film he/she is interested in. The book is usually always better than the movie because the book is more detailed, one gets to know the characters better, and it allows one to be more creative and have his/her own interpretation on what is occurring. In this case, The Great Gatsby is a remarkable 1925 novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was made into various movie adaptions in 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000 and 2013. Each version takes place in drastically different periods, so each type has its own take on the film, also depending on the director’s vision. This goes to show that the cinema has been trying periodically to recreate F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, but the attempts of the movies have mostly failed. In particular, the 1974 film decreases its effectiveness in representing the message that Fitzgerald was attempting to demonstrate in the book, which contributes to the book being significantly better than the film for various reasons.
Movie adaptations are widely produced in our modern cinematic world. Many book lovers criticize movie adaptations, proclaiming that it kills the spirit of the story, misses out on critical key themes, and eliminates the reader's and viewer’s imagination. The Great Gatsby movie, directed by Baz Luhrmann and released on May 1st, 2013, is a film adaptation of the book The Great Gatsby, written in 1922 by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The time lag between the movie and the book made some things unacceptable in our society. These changing societal proprietorship motivated Baz Luhrmann to alter the movie to be more suitable for current viewers. Consequently, there are many differences to be found between the book and the movie adaptation, which ultimately led to Luhrmann's movie being critiqued many times by the book’s fans, saying it was nothing like the actual book. Despite the fact that the movie adaptation of the Great Gatsby book follows the overall plot, it fails to show the racism, sexism, and abuse some of the characters withhold. The movie also fails to show the significance of the American dream, the condemnation of the lifestyle of the very rich, and it also annihilates reader’s imagination.
Sitting in high school having to read classic books knowing that you hate to read, but you had to read. Yeah, that was me in high school. I hated to read in high school until I got this one English teacher my Junior year that I fell in love with. She made reading so much better than what I had dreaded all the years. Senior year comes around and at the end of it she introduced us to The Great Gatsby. At first, I didn’t think I would like it, but I fell in love with the book and movie at the end of it all. The Great Gatsby is really about a love affair between a husband and wife. The wife ends up running over the woman her husband was cheating on with. Gatsby at the end got shot because the man thought he had killed his wife. The Great Gatsby is very good in so many ways. The book turned movie has both similarities and differences throughout. But, most of all it shows the romantic side of everyone through the book and movie.
What draws people into reading a book or watching a movie? Although they have many differences, there are similarities that cannot be overlooked. The science fiction book titled Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card was adapted into a movie that received mixed reviews concerning the justification of the book. Ender Wiggins, a genius, and a nobody on Earth, was the project of higher-ups in the world government. He was to be the next Commander of the Fleet that would destroy the Formic species in the Third Invasion. First, the character development in the movie had big differences to the book although the big picture was hardly altered. Next, the plot of the movie was altered from the book in a way that would grab an audience's attention in theater,
The Great Gatsby, was a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The novel was later turned into a movie in 1974 and 2013. Fitzgerald chose to write the novel in the third person omniscient point of view. Fitzgerald achieved this by writing the story in Nick Carraway’s perspective of everything. There were two different casts set in the movies, many scenes were left out while others were inserted, but the directors did capture a few themes from the novel to the film.
Kenedi Facey Mrs. Ciarrocca English Honors/Block B 13 February 2015 The Great Gatsby Book vs. Movie It is extremely hard to make a movie to compete with a novel's brilliance, especially with F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby's movie producer, Baz Luhrmann was fortunately able to accomplish the original novel's complicated plot and frame story by positively tweaking the 1920's glitz and glam, and taking on a modern approach with the novel's storyline. Although there were a few controversial and arguable scenes made throughout the movie, it is safe to say Baz Luhrmann has done a decent job in conveying Fitzgerald's theme and message in the movie.
This film is based on the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and was released in 2013. The film showcases Gatsby’s love and obsession for Daisy Buchanan, and lacks important details about the American Dream. Baz Luhrmann has a history of favoring romanticism, which is why it was not a surprise that he focused on the romantic aspect of Gatsby. Luhrmann made changes to the script, as well as the soundtrack; he used rap music paired with references to other literary works. Unfortunately, the story lost core points Fitzgerald made in his book simply for the sake of entertainment for the general public. However, the majority of the movie follows key scenes from the book, like Gatsby’s death and Myrtle’s death. Dr. Eckleburg does not play

The last scenes from the book and the movie of great gatsby are different their kinda extra scenes and in the book i felt it was more detail but in the movie it kinda just happened and was done with. After reading and watching the film The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald I can see many difference between how I envision the characters in the book and how they are played out in the movie. My first example is I see nick being this rich Yale grad trying to make a name for him self and all of a sudden I see spider man or the actor Tobey Maguire. I think that that is not how nick should look or sound. My second character is tom I thought tom would be mean and look like a shark. They would be much better with an actor named Kevin spacey in his place. I thought Gatsby was very spot on with his charm how ever I thought that Gatsby would not try to use a horrible fake southern accent all the time. Lastly daisy was the closes out of all to my
For me it's a film and a novel and it's called the Great Gatsby. I just love the book and the movie it's one of the best novels that i have read over and over. For a story rich in symbolism and recurring themes, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby fails to fully depict its own characters as being careless - rather, the movie version, directed by Baz Luhrmann, is able to use its medium with more success to achieve it properly. Through analyzing the affair and poor choices of an infidelious husband and the false obliviousness and thoughtless decisions of a young woman, the true variances between the mediums can and will be found.
