Or better, how do you explain when others are able to achieve things that seem to defy all of the assumptions? For example: Why is Apple so innovative? Year after year, after year, after year, they 're more innovative than all their competition. And yet, they 're just a computer company. They 're just like everyone else. They have the same access to the same talent, the same agencies, the same consultants, the same media. Then why is it that they seem to have something different? People don 't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. This explains why every single person in this room is perfectly comfortable buying a computer from Apple. But we 're also perfectly comfortable buying an MP3 player from Apple, or a phone from Apple, or a DVR from Apple. But, as I said before, Apple 's just a computer company. There 's nothing that distinguishes them structurally from any of their competitors. Their competitors are all equally qualified to make all of these products. In fact, they tried. A few years ago, Gateway came out with flat screen TVs. They 're eminently qualified to make flat screen TVs. They 've been making flat screen monitors for years.Nobody bought one. Dell came out with MP3 players and PDAs, and they make great quality products, and they can make perfectly well-designed products -- and nobody bought one. In fact, talking about it now, we can 't even imagine buying an MP3 player from Dell. Why would you buy an MP3 player from a computer company? But we do it every day. People don 't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. In his “Seven Lessons of Leadership,” David Gergen claims that “leadership starts from within.” This statement attributes leadership quality to the background of the leader. With sound ethics, a leader has a base for his or her actions. Alice Paul was intelligent, insatiably curious, and persistent beyond compare. These character traits originated in her childhood. Paul was brought up with Quaker traditions, which emphasized “self reliance, humility, probity, and service.” They encourage academic excellence and athleticism more than regular society. The highlighting of these values shaped Paul for her future (pg 5). Furthermore, Paul’s parents played a role in the assembly of her character. William Paul, her father, was harsh and unfriendly.
The concept of effective leadership is a topic that has been widely debated by individuals and professional leaders in many societies. In Kevin Cashman’s book, Leadership from the Inside Out: Becoming a Leader for life, the author reveals that leadership is defined through a person’s understanding of their internal nature, rather than the values, beliefs, and morals a society claims that a leader should possess. Even though Cashman does acknowledge the importance of the societal view of leadership, he argues that true leadership is defined by an individual’s understanding of their internal essence. In each chapter Cashman strongly debates that leaders lead by virtue of who they are. He defines this outlook on leadership as the Inside-Out Leadership Method. This is a method that allows an authoritative figure to develop a strong understanding of their physical, mental, and spiritual essence to lead others towards a mutual goal.

I began this book like most books, with great anticipation that it was going to be amazing, why else would a qualified instructor assign it. I assumed that it would be a shining example of the finest managerial principals in existence all compacted into a simple to read text with plenty of graphs and helpful handouts. I was certain that I would be a more effective leader for having read it. I spent time strategizing how I would write my paper with great enthusiasm. Then, I read the book.
StrengthsFinder 2.0, written by Tom Rath, was a book I chose for a purpose. Rath mentions that when we live within our shortcomings/ our weaknesses, we tend to live in this world unhappy and unmotivated (Rath, 2007). In this paper, I will discuss some background and major topics presented in his book. I will describe how his topics can be useful in nursing practice, as well as my own practice. I will end this paper with a look into how his book helped me to grow in my own soon-to-be leadership role.
Some leaders are born, breed, or chosen. But the leader I chose to write about he became. I'm talking about Martin Luther King Jr. An American Baptist minister who became a leader for African-American Civil Rights Movement and had executive impact. He was able to unite people together to have a voice, and change a nation. It was a time when many African Americans were treated very harshly and unequal. It was a time of violence and fear. But one man was able to help thousands of people overcome that fear and speak up by his side. He had an aura around him that I don't think many people have. An aura to bring people together, and I think a multitude of people saw that in him too. Martin Luther King Jr. had all the aspects of a great leader.
Motivator, director, inspirer --- appellations that every leader strives to be. Young leaders set these titles as their goals, striving to become a greater motivator, director, and inspirer everyday. However, they recognize that there is no time that one can exhibit outstanding leadership because, simply, outstanding leadership does not exist. Apple operates with fierce competition in the consumer electronics segment which comes in many different forms. There are a large number of competitors in the different market niches who offer many similar products. Furthermore, many of these competitors' products are priced much less than an Apple branded products. Just as soon as Apple releases a new product, major companies begin imitating it immediately. In the personal computer industry, market pressure is continuously being exerted from such companies such as IBM, Dell, HP, and Toshiba (Wildstrom, 2009). Furthermore, with its flagship product the IPhone, Apple competes with companies like HTC, Palm, Blackberry, and Motorola (Wortham, 2011). Apple has had significant success despite the competitive environment because Apple commands a brand loyalty and dedication to innovation that few companies have ever achieved.
Determination, courage, and confidence are all characteristics needed to be a good leader. The principal player in a music group is considered to be a leader. Even bands need leaders, if we didn’t have leaders where would we be today? John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” A good leader is liked by the people, has power, and produces followers. When there is an unwillingness to make things happen, to take the initiative and accept responsibility; this is when a leader emerges. Leaders develop through drive, creativity, and devotion.
