Sir John Reith Sir John Reith was the first Director General of the BBC, and he had particularly strong views on broadcasting as having a cultural and moral responsibility as a means of educating and informing the masses. He once famously stated –
‘It is occasionally indicated to us that we are apparently setting out to give the public what we think they need- and not what they want – but few know what they want and very few what they need. In any case it is better to overestimate the mentality of the public than to underestimate it. He who prides himself on giving what he thinks the public wants is

The idea of the BBC as a public service meant that the provision should be public goods rather than a private commodity (Curran, 2000). The funding of the service was based upon the license fee and their agreement with parliament, and this was decided when it was felt that advertising could limit the number of programmes they would be able to broadcast. They maintained the view that ‘our responsibility is to carry into the greatest possible number of homes, everything that is best in every department of human knowledge, endeavour, or achievement’ (cited in Smith, 1998).
That the BBC kept a firm degree of independence from the government was always at the forefront of Reith’s aims, and the fact that it also gained a reputation for its impartiality meant that it came to be, and to some extent, still is a respected institution throughout the world. Nowadays, the BBC still pride themselves on being ‘free of commercial interests and political bias’ (2002).
During his reign on the BBC throne, Reith came under much criticism on his views of overestimating the mentality of the public, and providing a service that contained the matters that he thought should be most important to society. He was often accused of being elitist in his approach to programming policy. Many of the working class began to feel alienated by the

Most people go through life not worrying about others thoughts, just throwing stereotypes around without any justification or knowledge of the person being alienated. Some are ungrateful for the religious freedom that most of us are able to carry. Some do not realize the fight that people went through over 300 years ago to gain religious freedom and work through and around the profiling given by the hierarchy of society. No one worked harder for the freedoms to be provided and stereotypes to be dissolved than Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island. Williams, born in London in 1603, was a seasoned young man early on, after witnessing many burnings at the stake of puritans for being "heretics" and not following the religion of the

In Robert Remini’s introduction (rpt. in Robert Remini, A Short history of the United States:From the Arrival of Native American Tribes to the Obama Presidency, 1st ed. In the introduction, he clearly shows that he is pro-Obama. Remini shows this by praising the Obama campaign, insulting the McCain-Palin campaign with his subtle use of words, and using a certain tone throughout the introduction.

One of the most remarkable stories is the one of John Norman. He was a deputy chief of the New York City fire department. He was asleep whenever the first tower of the World Trade Center was hit. He had turned off the ringer on his phone because he was on vacation from work. His plan that day was to sleep in. He was completely unaware of what was going on outside. Then his answering machine got an "all call" message from the department. Still he didn't know what fully was going on so he turned on the television. He said, “As I’m just about to turn off the TV and head for the door, the south tower collapses. I thought it was a bomb." It took him and hour and a half just to get to the city and where he needed to be. He was put in shock whenever
Have you ever wondered about the role of government in society? Henry Cloud, a leadership expert and psychologist, claims that “every human being must have boundaries in order to have successful relationships or a successful performance in life” (Cloud). However, on the broader spectrum, can this message also apply to our government? Even if you have not considered these two questions, you will certainly have expectations from the government, which may be related to your wellbeing and/or the society’s wellbeing. Since each individual has different expectations, it is easier to analyze the role of government by considering societal expectations. Societal expectations are commonly shared views about the role of an exceptional government, which would include security, right to equal opportunity, and economic prosperity. Thus, the role of a government is to ensure that the country is moving towards economic prosperity along with providing security to its residents. However, does this mean that all of the government’s decisions are directed towards this responsibility? Unfortunately, this is not always the case; there are many times of when a government oversteps its boundaries by hindering economic progress or sacrificing domestic security. One example of this would be the USA’s decision to send its military aid to Pakistan for fighting terrorism. Nonetheless, there are also many times of when a government acts within its boundaries by ensuring the protection of its residents.
