Slavery In Early America

During the 19th century slavery was a very prominent and controversial issue between the north and the southern states. In the South, most people believed that slavery was a profitable way of life and if the slavery was to be abolished it would then affect their economy. On the hand the northern had different opinions about slavery and intended to stop it. The fact that the perception were different between the two led to a very difficult situation in resolving the issue.

People used religion as a way to justify the act of slavery. They believed that God determined people’s places in life, so slavery was considered a “misfortune” controlled by God and not a social evil (Shi and Tindall, 91). Africans were also seen as “heathens” which lead people to believe that they had the right to enslave the Africans (Shi and Tindall, 92) The Africans brought the skills they had in Africa with them which made them very desirable in the American economy. In an idealistic democratic America, one likes to think that everyone is free and everyone is equal. However, this is not the complete truth; we still battle injustice and work to treat everyone fairly every single day. But what is the truth is that we have come a long way and that we have improved over time. Slavery before the Civil War is important in U.S. history because not only was it involved in various significant events; it also shows us how far our society has come.

Slavery's mark has long since been made on America, from the start of indentured servants whom came over to escape their previous life to work in turn for a fresh start in a world that had more frontierland the people to fill it. Moving through history slavery then brought Africans over to America in hopes of a better labor source then their help. A revolution in society happened. Slavery grip on the new land transformed the Europeans sister society into something entirely new. Something entirely American.

She traces the evolution of this system and its effect on Native American social structures, including how race was understood among indigenous peoples. Previous to the mid-eighteen century, the south was a different place where hundreds of Natives groups controlled their respective territories. The Unites States during the 1850s was a harsh time for African Americans, not only were they treated extremely harsh; but many of them were slaves as well. Slavery was the topic of every discussion during this time period and the United States was literally split on the issue of slavery. A lot of the Southern States wanted to continue slavery because it was a way of life. Many of the southerners depend on slavery to help grow and harvest crops that were on acres and acres of land. Northerns, on the other hand were against slavery. Slavery to them were not only inhumane, but Northerns rarely depended on slaves. Abolitionists were present throughout the United States, they created escape routes and safe houses for slaves who wanted to escape. The Underground Railroad was a prime example of this, not only was this risky for the slaves themselves but it was also risky for the people who helped them along the way. With the Fugitive Slave Act in full affect, Abolitionist were indeed breaking the ‘law’; but for equality for everyone no matter the skin color was a risk many were willing to take and die for.

Slavery was an event that happened in America, and it boomed in the 1800’s. It was and still is a terrible thing. That’s right, it still is. Slavery still happens in other countries, like Sudan and Niger. It is often noticed and seen most in Africa, but it also still happens in India, the Middle East, and in other places as well. It is technically illegal in every country of the world, but some of the ones listed and others do a bad job of enforcing those laws. I will explain this and other slavery issues in this essay, and let’s get started.

How did slaves in the nineteenth century American South deal with enslavement? White people from the South might say that the slaves are happy to serve their masters since they take care of them, but history books like Give Me Liberty! By Eric Foner, and first person experience books like Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, and documents like The Confessions of Nat Turner, 1831 in Michael P. Johnsons’ book, this was not the case for most of the time. Slaveholders gave slave’s so privileges, but by no means does this mean that this “good treatment” out weight the awful treatment. Which is why slaves found different ways, some more severe than others, to rebelled against slavery.

As I know, slavery in the U.S. was the legal establishment of human chattel slavery that existed in the 18th century and 19th century right after U.S. became independent and before the termination of the Civil War between the North and the South. Slavery was first adapted in British America from the early colonial days, by 1776--the Declaration of Independence it was recognized in thirteen colonies. Thomas Jefferson expressed a variety of ideas on slavery in America in his book Notes on the State of Virginia. One of the ideas that stood out to me was the intellectual and artistic ability of the black slave being put into question if the slave can learn like a white man. Jefferson compares the condition of the Native Americans who were never essentially enslaved, to the slave who also never taught how to be skilled in certain crafts. Jefferson analyzes what it means to be “robbed “of what it means to be educated in a world where whites reigned superior to the black person. Overall, Jefferson acknowledges the differences but does not purpose any kind of effective solution.

Slavery and race developed early American life in the colonies, because of the desperate need of food and the motivation for profit that urge slave traders and planters continue slavery and the urge for poor whites to want superior status and the consequences for escape and rebellion of a slave.

Slavery in the United States existed from the beginning of European colonization. Colonizers for decades imported from Africa, thousands of people for slave labor for the conquerors. The situation began to change after the War of Independence of the United States, when the thirteen colonies revolted against the government of the United Kingdom. Announcement Declaration of Independence in 1776 and its recognition in the Treaty of Paris, London seven years later, gave birth to a new state. At that time, outlined a visible distinction between the northern and southern states in terms of the approach to the issue of slavery. In subsequent years, successive states of the north of the continent prohibit the import and sale of slaves. Things were different in the south of the country. Slavery in the United Sates ended in the nineteenth century due to the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Sadly, that was only the end of legal slavery. Today a modern form a slavery still continues not only in the United Sates but other countries as well. Some forms of modern slavery are human trafficking, forced marriage, and forced labor. According to Employee Relations Law Journal “slavery is where ownership is exercised over a person, where individuals are coerced into providing their services or do so under threat of a penalty.”(Whincup, Garbett, & McNicholas Spring 2014 65)

Slavery. A “curse” brought by North American settlers that started around 1619. Evidence proves that a Dutch ship transported around 20 slaves to Jamestown, Virginia. Slavery quickly spread throughout Virginia and other surrounding states. By the early 17th century Slavery had become crucial for Europeans, French, and Spanish settlers. Slaves mainly were forced to work rice, tobacco, and indigo plantations.

African countries remained independent. But, in the Americas, Europeans governed colonies. Plantation economic organization was more common in the Americas, although establishments in both areas used forced labor. Because of racial mixture, American society was less uniform than African society was, and the mixture of people produced a social hierarchy mostly dependent on race. Although slavery was present in Africa, the absence of racial mixture left untouched the traditional social relationships based on nobility, land, and priesthood.
