Drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, cigarette and cannabis are pretty popular with
teens and students underage nowadays like a trend. And the reasons why they start
trying and doing it it are many like depression, anxiety, family issues, for fun....etc. but
nobody actually know why. The age of students start drinking and smoking is around at
least 11 to 13 years old. What leads them to doing it? Which are more likely to smoke
and drink, the younger teens or the older teens? What types of teens and students
underage do it? Will they stop at a certain age? How does smoking and drinking affect
students? How can we get more information? Where is the information from?
There are many articles that write about this situation but I’ve chose one that has
very good information and sources. The name of the article I chose is “ Top Students
More Likely To Smoke Pot, Drinking Alcohol, Study Says.”, an online article from
website “CNN.com”. The source of this article is from website “ BMJopen.com” with the
title “Childhood Academic Ability In Relation To Cigarette, Alcohol And Cannabis Use
From Adolescence Into Early Adulthood: Longitudinal Study Of Young People In
England.”
In summary, this article says according to the source from website
BMJopen.com, high test scored British students are less likely to smoke cigarettes and
more likely to drink alcohol compared to lower scored students. Some argue that “these
patterns of substance use may continue
Youth is a time when individuals experiment with and get into trouble with psychoactive substances, including nicotine-containing e-cigarettes. In 2014, 44.4% of 12th-graders had ever used marijuana/hashish, and 35.1% had used in the past year; 41.4% reported being drunk in the past year. Users of one type of psychoactive substance are more likely to use others, like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, THC or prescription
College students have no parents to tell them that they cannot go to a party because there is going to be alcohol there. They have to take it upon themselves to make the decision whether they should go or not. They do not have mom and dad making decisions for them anymore. Environmental and peer pressure combined gets students to try the temptations of alcohol. There is not a weekend that goes by that that alcohol is not available to students.
Drugs and alcohol is a major social issue (J. David Hawkins, Richard F. Catalano, and Janet Y. Miller, 1992). It is not something that can be solved by the law (Lee P. Brown, 2008). Throughout history, many attempts have been made to try and legalize and control alcohol and drug addiction but has failed.
Drinking generally increases in popularity amongst teenagers each year, which fuels the controversial issue of lowering the drinking age to eighteen or keeping it
Consume alcoholic beverages during this time, can damage short and long-term brain development and that damage can be permanent and irreversible. Teens are more susceptible to suffer blackouts, memory loss, and alcohol intoxication from drinking. They also can damage their ability to remember things. At the same time people argue that adolescent drinkers perform worse in school than those who do not drink, have an increased risk of social problems, depression, suicidal thoughts and violence. Another argue used by people to support this law is that those who begin drinking in their teens are not only at greater risk for developing alcoholism sometime in their lives, they are also at greater risk for developing alcoholism more quickly and at younger ages, especially chronic, relapsing alcoholism. But alcohol is not the only cause of brain damage, in the other hand we can find tobacco as another source of brain damage. For many tobacco users, long-term brain changes induced by continued nicotine exposure result in addiction, a condition of compulsive drug seeking and use, even in the face of negative consequences. Studies suggest that additional compounds in tobacco smoke, such as acetaldehyde, may enhance nicotine’s effects on the brain. Here is when the National Minimum Drinking Age Act does not make sense because the legal age to consume or purchase tobacco or cigarettes is 18 years. If the one of the main purpose of the National Minimum Drinking age was avoid brain damage on youth people the government should raise the minimum age to consume
Alcohol has been a topic among people under the age of 21 for a long time. Many
Few explanations behind high schoolers drinking are: companion weight, pleasure, and so on. In any case, the principle explanation behind doing as such is "violating the law." 87% of secondary school seniors have utilized liquor. That implies that a huge amount of youngsters less than seventeen years old to eighteen have utilized liquor some time recently. We as a whole know why adolescents drink, I mean is regular since. Simply the vibe that they get of violating the law is colossal. Being revolt and not taking after the guidelines is an imperative part of a youngster's life. Outcomes are the one that change them, yet we don't need them to encounter the results of being affected by liquor since we know them and they are deadly. Kicking the bucket in a fender bender and executing others is a wreck that we would prefer not to clean.
Teenage marijuana use is at an all time high, it has been found that today’s teen marijuana smokers are doing so at extreme amounts, some even do so daily. What are the factors that cause them to start experimenting and smoking marijuana? The amounts of marijuana being smoked by today’s teenagers must have an effect on the developing teens. The minds and bodies of the teens who smoke must be facing some sort of developing issues. Marijuana is a mild drug compared to harsher drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth, etc. the users of marijuana will eventually look for a stronger and long lasting high so they will turn to these harsher and more addicting substances. The decisions that today’s teens are making to smoke marijuana might have a
College life is filled with changes. It is filled with many new experiences. As college students, we are on our own, adults. As adults we are responsible for keeping up to date on information that affects us. One issue that affects college students nation wide is drinking. The current legal drinking age in the United States is twenty-one years of age. The Federal government raised the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 in 1984. Even with the current drinking age at twenty-one, many people under that age choose to drink anyway. In fact, a government survey from 1996 showed that 56% of high school seniors reported drinking in the last 30 days (Hanson). With so many underage drinkers, many people
Underage drinking is becoming more of a noticeable problem in society, not only with high school students, but also with younger generations. Drinking is all over the television, the radio, and talked about in schools, public places, etc. Alcohol advertisements are more and more appealing to younger generations. If our youth is educated at a younger age, if school policies were stricter, and if clubs and bars cracked down on underage drinking the problem would not be as serious.
Teenage smoking can be a result of the influence of other teens, or maybe the amount of peer pressure. This can cause a teen to want to smoke or even think about smoking (Alcid, Arthur, page 1). Statistics show that 794 student and 22.4 percent of teens claimed to be tobacco users. (Alcid, Arthur, page 1). Teens tend to be more abrasive when smoking, and seem to act different while smoking and once they have gotten into the habit of smoking make it a constant thing. In 2003, 21.9 percent of high school students currently smoke cigarettes (Alcid, Arthur, page 1).
These teens may think that smoking shows that they are old enough to make their own decisions.

Tobacco; one of the most profitable products in history, an addictive substance, and a deadly killer. Smoking tobacco used to be a thing that was endorsed in American society. Now, with the new medical advances and knowledge, society has seen the side effects of smoking and how fatal it actually is. Teenagers have been one of the largest age groups that have been affected by smoking. After analyzing all possible reasons as to why teenagers would smoke while knowing it can affect their health, three possible reasons stuck out the most. Teenagers smoke despite knowing the health problems that originate from smoking because of peer pressure, an “invincibility” mentality, and seeing a role model or family member smoke.
According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year, or 1 of every five deaths. In 2015, about 15 of every 100 U.S. adults age 18 years or older currently smoke cigarettes. However, this is a decline from nearly 21 of every 100 adults back in 2005. One reason for the decline is due to smoking cessation programs developed within our communities. These programs are helping smokers to quit their habit, and improve their health and lifestyle. Let us look at what it takes to make a smoke cessation successful within ones’ community.
