Teenagers and Adults, Smoking/Cigarettes. Most people tend to think of those clubs with the drum and a few instruments on the stage, with the words being spoken by a guy wearing black and a beanie placed on his head. But it’s more than coffee and a crowd. It such a simple word, a simple way of amplifying a situation, a way to subtle give a message or blatantly point it out. Especially if it can change a person’s life, to better it, by quitting something harmful to their health like smoking. There is one man whom has gotten his point across, Nick Flynn has passed on a message that is clear and honest, in Some Ether, “I know cigarettes can kill & wonder why she wants to die.” (GoodReads Inc. 2). Cigarettes can lead to many different …show more content…
A famous Science fiction writer, Kurt Vonnegut, points out that “The public health authorities never mention the main reason many Americans have for smoking heavily, which is that smoking is fairly sure, fairly honorable form of suicide.” (Vonnegut) Both Flynn have similar outlooks when it comes to cigarettes and smoking, and the end result is basically, cigarettes is Russian roulette, death. There are many people in the past ranging from actors and musicians that have ceased to live from lung cancer or other diseases due to cigarettes. Even though the times are different from way back when, even though it may have been something that everybody did it; doesn’t mean that it is the right thing to do now or then. An example of a Famous smoker that died due to smoking cigarettes, is the actor Eric Lawson, the latest Marlboro Man. (Pearce) Though, being in a cigarette commercial and smoking is a given. Another example, Yul Brynner or Desi Arnez, even Gary Cooper are among the many actors that have died from lung, throat cancer caused by cigarettes. (Jindal) Smoking can lead to death, just up what happened to Ricky Ricardo. Cigarettes can have a profound effect on a life, whether it be permanent health issues that haunt them for the rest of their life or a long drawn out lung cancer that tortures with every puff of breath they take. Smoking is playing Russian roulette with life, you may get lucky and get
According to “The Action of Smoking and Health,” every six seconds someone loses their life as a result of a tobacco related disease. It’s hard to realize how damaging cigarette smoking’s effect can be until you experience it first hand. It is almost certain that every one knows someone who is currently a smoker or was a smoker at some point in their life. For years smoking was the seen as the “cool” thing to do, it was how to “fit in.” There was no real emphasis placed on the dangers of this particular habit, and as a result, it became a world wide trend. In the past, technology and medicine were not nearly advanced enough to be able to determine just how harmful tobacco usage is. However, as we have made medical and
Many drugs are used, misused, and abused in American society today. Some of these carry stigma in the general population, forcing users into an underground drug subculture. Others are accepted and almost promoted under certain circumstances. Tobacco is one of those drugs. Tobacco will be discussed in the context of cigarette smoking. This is not to undermine the existence or danger of other forms of tobacco, but instead to have an exhaustive discussion of cigarette smoking and its societal impact. Cigarettes are a means of inhaling tobacco, where it enters the lungs and is absorbed through the blood vessels, traveling to the heart, from which it is finally pumped to the brain (Hogan, Gabrielsen, Luna, and Grothaus 2003:76). Cigarettes are detrimental to society because they not only affect the user who chooses to smoke; they impact people around them through second-hand and residual smoke. The damage done by cigarettes is not impossible to address. Successful prevention measures are already in place, but this paper intends to suggest other more direct measures, especially related to statutory regulations.
Filmmaker Aaron Biebert has recently spoken out about this problem in an interview, explaining that the promotion of this kind of misinformation is contributing to millions of lives that have been lost due to cigarettes.
While it’s true that smoking cigarette is not good for the health, many people are still smoking cigarettes. Though some of them have tried to stop this habit, however, most of them have failed and have continued to smoke at the expense of their health.

It is estimated that “one out of four high school seniors and one out of three young adults under age 26 are smokers”, which adds up to 42.1 million Americans who legally smoke (Smoking). This high amount does not include minors, or people who use tobacco products other than cigarettes and cigars. This number has decreased greatly since its peak in 1964, but the health effects are still prevalent today (Health). Lung cancer is one of the most infamous results of smoking, with 82.4% of all lung cancer cases attributing to smoking (Facts). “Of former smokers in the U.S., 1,154,000 have a cancer other than lung cancer from smoking” (Facts). This includes oral cancer, diagnosed especially among users of smokeless tobacco, usually associated with teeth loss and gum recession (Health). Other common illnesses that correlate with tobacco use include bronchitis, emphysema, and pneumonia, which cause 113,100 American deaths annually (Facts). The Secretary of Health and Human Services states “This year alone, nearly one-half million adults will still die prematurely because of smoking…and if we continue on our current trajectory, 5.6 million children alive today who are younger than 18 years of age will die prematurely” (Health). Imagine how many lives would be spared had the nation not succumbed to the addiction of

In fact, for some reasons smoking is used as a shorthand in fiction to say that someone is “living on the edge”. It’s probably started in the time of the 40’s Film Noir (genre of crime dramas), but it can also be clearly seen in many movies and TV shows such as Mad Men, where the whole cast including the women, smoke to accurately depict the American culture of the 60s. Furthermore, in the TV series Friends, the so known “uncool” Chandler gained little respect by smoking when all others hated it and he was again “living on the edge”. Through out these series and movies, I have also found that characters portrayed as the non-smokers were seen as the “Stop Having fun
Today, there are over 16 million people living with a disease that is related to the use of cigarettes. Many of the users who do smoke today may have been influenced by the media and how most of the television shows and music videos include
When you breathe in cigarette smoke, which is full of cancer-causing substances the changes in the lung tissue begin almost instantly. Not only is smoking bad for you and people around you, but it also horrible for your future children. According to cancer.gov smoking makes it harder for a woman to get pregnant. A pregnant woman that smokes is at higher risk of miscarriage, and having her baby born too early and with an unusually low birth weight. A woman who smokes during or after pregnancy increases your child's risk of death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Also according to http://www.cancerresearchuk.org the main way that smoking causes cancer is by damaging our DNA, including important important genes that protect us against cancer. Many of the chemicals found in cigarettes have been shown to cause DNA damage. Smokers are also less able to handle poisonous chemicals than non-smokers that have healthy lungs and blood. Chemicals in cigarette smoke make it harder for smokers to remove poisonous chemicals, and can make their disease-fighting systems less effective too. It usually takes many years, or at least 20 years, for the DNA damage from smoking to cause
First of all, cigarettes cause harmful diseases that may cause death. Cigarettes are as dangerous as getting attacked by a lion. According to “Should Cigarettes Be Illegal,” “Tobacco clearly takes a significant toll on the lives of Americans, causing 450,000 premature deaths each year, and drastic measures should be taken to eliminate the habit from our lives, including, some say, banning cigarettes.” This means that each year several people die from smoking cigarettes. These deaths can be caused from kidney failure, lung cancer, and other harmful diseases. “Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking,” says that “Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body,
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2016), Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States.
