Synthesis Discussion Results from this systematic review showed that SMEPs seem to have a positive impact in COPD patients. SMEPs can improve HRQoL, self-efficacy, COPD knowledge, and decrease health care use (COPD-related hospitalization and ED visits) in patients with COPD. Therefore, the studies demonstrated improvement of self-management behavior in COPD patients for a long period of time after the self-management education. Findings showed that SMEPs can improve HRQoL and self-efficacy, that can last up to 12 months after the intervention. Significant changes in SGRQ scores and CSES within 6 months and 12 months, after the intervention reveal sustained positive effects on the promotion of disease symptoms control, and psychological
The management of respiratory problem because adult learners affected will have to go through behavioral and lifestyle changes which are very significant to learn as individuals ( Morris, Marzano, Dandy and O’Brien, 2012).

According to Dodd et al. (2001), there are three dimensions included in the SMT. First is symptom experience, which includes the person’s viewpoint, evaluation, and reaction to the symptom. The second dimension is symptom management strategies, which are interventions that are intended to postpone and reduce, if not able to totally prevent, a negative outcome from symptom experience. The interventions that are done may be focused on resolving one or multiple components of the person’s symptoms to attain the planned outcomes. The last dimension is the symptom status outcome, which is a result of interventions done during symptom management strategies. Multiple aspects are
The nursing role in pulmonary rehabilitation includes one on one sessions with patients to cover more in-depth education of the disease process including actual anatomy and physiology of the pulmonary system. After that has been covered then the nurses can focus on causes of COPD, symptoms of the disease and management of them, diet, pulmonary exercise, medications for COPD and compliance issues, and most importantly smoking cessation. The nurses will likely require the patient to give return demonstrations of the medication use and pulmonary exercises such as pursed lip breathing (Mohammadi, Jowkar, Khankeh & Tafti, 2013).
When the validity and reliability of this tool is replicated and verified thru further wide scale studies, then this scale can be used as an evaluation tool for the effectiveness of an intervention that aims on improving routine health behaviors.
The two essays that I choose for the synthesis essay are Parkinson’s Alley by Joy Horowitz and The Environmental Issue from Hell: Global Warming Is the Great Moral Crisis of Our Time by Bill Mckibben. Parkinson’s Alley is about residents in California’s Central Valley town of Visalia who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This part of California has the highest number of people diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease. The pesticides that are used in the surrounding farms seeps into the water that the residents use every day, causing them to get the disease. The Environmental Issue from Hell: Global Warming Is the Great Moral Crisis of Our Time is about how global warming is a moral crisis that, if not combated
The aim of this essay is to consider approaches to promoting the self-management of a long-term condition. The focus will be linked to module content and based on a patient that I have provided nursing care for during my clinical practice. There will be a brief introduction of the patient and the context in which I was involved in their nursing care. The pathophysiology of the chosen LTC along with the related physical, psychological and social needs of the patient will be considered. There will be a discussion of principles of self-management that will link to national LTC policies. This will also include initiatives and analysis of the evidence of the underlying principles for an approach to providing self-management support, for the
The United States Postal Service has existed for more than two centuries. As the people have grown into the new world of digital technology and electronic communication, the USPS continues to become more of a disservice to the American people. The USPS has still used the same rules and principles for more than two centuries, which does not intrigue any more customers. The USPS needs to be reconstructed in order to fit the needs of a changing world. As the world grows and develops into higher levels of thinking and technological advances, the USPS should grow with them, changing to become more useful to American people.

Self-efficacy, for the purpose of this study, may be defined as a person’s optimistic self-belief. This is the belief that a person can develop the skills to perform new or difficult tasks to cope with changes in health and functioning. When a person perceives self-efficacy, it will facilitate goal-setting, effort, investment, persistence, overcoming obstacles and recovery from disappointments and failures. It can be regarded as a positive outlook or proactive way to handle stress factors. It is the ability to successfully cope with health changes, and implies an internal and stable acceptance of changes and ability to successfully adapt to those changes. Perceived self-efficacy is functional in
Baptist et al. (2013) indicated empirical adequacy of this theory by conducting a randomized trial of self-regulation intervention for older adults with asthma. Participants participated in a six-session program which was conducted over the telephone and in group sessions. They selected an asthma-specific goal, identified problems, and addressed potential barriers. At the end of the trial, the authors concluded that a self-regulation intervention can improve asthma control, quality of life, and healthcare utilization in older
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is major leading cause of morbidity and mortality in United States. There are some risk factors for COPD like age and smoking and other illnesses, often leading COPD patients to present with multiple coexisting comorbidities. COPD exacerbations and comorbidities plays a major role in the overall severity in individual’s health. The management and the medical intervention in COPD patients with comorbidities need a holistic approach. All of the health care specialists in COPD management need to work together with professionals specialized in the management of the other chronic diseases in order to provide a multidisciplinary approach to COPD patients with multiple diseases. Many patients have comorbid conditions (eg, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus) that may interfere with COPD management and increase health care resource utilization
Pulmonary or respiratory rehabilitation has been proven to help increase chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) sufferers’ quality of life (QOL), decrease hospitalizations and overall cost of care (Soysa, Mckeough, Spencer & Alison, 2012). Although pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has shown to have positive benefits, the Committee on National Surveillance System for Cardiovascular and Select Chronic Diseases, Institute of Medicine indicates that less than 2% of COPD patients have participated in any type of PR program (2011, p. 39). Some noted system barriers include physician referral patterns that range between 3% and 16% internationally and lack of program availability (Johnston & Grimmer-Somers, 2010). Patient barriers also exist
