Snowmobiling is a recreational sport loved by people all over the world, both young and old. Originally used to help survive the harshest of winters, snow mobiles have adapted to become an extremely popular winter activity. They can be found in many countries, and have many different uses including, but not limited to, outdoor work, tourism, hunting, and travel. Snow mobiles have a short history, are very popular today, and have very few effects on the environment. The original snow mobile was created in 1908 in the town of Waterville, Maine. It looked like a tiny locomotive and was called the “Lombard Log Hauler.” A year later O. C. Johnson created the first machine that actually drove on top of the snow. In 1913 the owner of New Hampshire Ford …show more content…
They are often used in search and rescue missions to quickly cover ground and possibly help carry people to safety. They are often used by forest rangers to help with the patrol of mountainous areas during winter. They can help rangers to detect poaching and hurt animals in areas. They are also commonly used on the Alaskan frontier. Many people in Alaska use snow mobiles to help with hunting. They often are not close to a grocery store and cannot just run out to grab food, they have to hunt it. In below zero temperatures and high snow, hunting can be difficult. To move quickly and be able to bring home an animal, many people rely on snow mobiles. They are also used to help raise farm animals in that area and move different heavy equipment. Some roads become impassable by a normal vehicle, which makes snow machines a great tool to have.
Snow mobiles are often used to help in other recreational winter sports as well. They are sometimes used to groom ski and snowboard trails and also do ski patrols. They can move downed logs from areas and keep them safe for skiers and snowboarders. Many people use snow machines to access winter cabins and ice fishing
Now before I jump into this essay, I will first give you a background on the history of the sport. The original concept that the snowboard is based upon is the “snurfer”. Developed on Christmas Day, 1965 by Sherman Poppen in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1968, Tom Sims furthered the sport by developing the very first snowboard. Then in 1977 Jake Burton Carpenter developed the first bindings and changed the sport forever.
Snowboarding has reached a height in popularity that has some didn’t think was possible. The snow boring industry has grown by a tenfold by now grossing 5 billion dollars a year. Many companies have invested millions of dollars into
The physics of skiing and snowboarding are very similar. They both rely on a downwards pull from gravity. This pull is what turns the potential energy into kinetic energy. As a smooth surface (or two) pass over the snow a small amount of energy is lost to friction. The bottom of the skis or board zoom across the surface of the snow creating heat. The heat along with the weight bearing down on the snow melt some of the snow creating a film of water on the bottom of the surface. Some energy is also lost by through wind resistance of the riders silhouette.
Residents and visitors alike take advantage of the city's hard winters and have a good time in the snow. Activities during the coldest months of the year include downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and riding snowmobiles.

Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.
When people are on winter break, most want to go out and play in the snow, but who knew that the snow could be one's worst nightmare when stubbornness comes into play. Most people go out on an enjoyable snow-white day to sled down snowy hills and fling semi-hard snowballs at each other. No one would think that maybe sledding down the snowy hills could be so dangerous when they are having fun, and trying to show off. I certainly did not think that it was dangerous, but boy was I so wrong. Normally being a Los Angeles girl, going up to Big Bear is such an amazing experience, because down in the Los Angeles region it does not snow at all. However, I was not ready to face what was slowly going to change me in the mountains of California.
Once the snow started many people became stranded where they were at. Many people were stuck at work, school, and even in their vehicles. The people stuck in vehicles were the major portion of the death toll. Roadways became unpassable and alternate means of travel had to be acquired. Many people used snowmobiles to travel during this time. Snowmobiles became a huge asset to help get food and rescue people during the storm.
Ever heard of snow tubing? Snow tubing is like extreme sledding. You are in a tube, and you et plunged down a large hill. It’s is very fun, but also quite dangerous. You should never stand up on your tube, while going down. You should not have more than one person in a rube, and wait until the person before you is out of the way before you go down. Avoiding these risks will keep you safe, sand you’ll still have tons of fun. Down to go snow tubing, you still need to wear the right gear. You will need a heavy coat, socks, snow pants, a long sleeved shirt, boots, gloves, a hat, and a scarf. These will keep you warm. Depending on how step the slope is, you’ll need a helmet as well. Now go have fun!
Snowboarding has an amazing background and explanation of how it came to be. It all started with the people who surfed and skateboarded. They wanted something similar to do in the winter. Sherman Poppen was the creator of the snurfer (an early snowboard) in 1965. Sherman was one of the skateboarders who wanted to surf but lived in Michigan. One day he nailed two skis together and attached a rope with a handle to the front thus creating the snurfer. Sherman then called his friends, who were engineers for the Brunswick Corporation and asked them to make some of the snurfers. The Brunswick Corporation made skis, bowling balls, bowling alleys, and bowling pins. The snurfer took the world by storm, but people wanted a safe way to ride. Eventually Jake Burton Carpenter started making a new model called the ski board and this was the first company for snowboards. Jake Burton was a Stockbroker who fell in love with snowboarding and decided to take the risk and start making them. He became the founder of the
It is very important to stay on the trail during snowmobiling so then you don't hurt anything under or above the snow. If there is a baby pine tree growing then you run it over it with the track of the sled it could kill the tree. Maybe a farmer is planting winter rye and wants you to stay off from it so then this
“Many of these tribes hold true that if this Holy Mountain is disturbed, than so too the fabric of their culture, their spirituality and their livelihood will be disturbed” (SnowBowl Expansion, p.1). The San Francisco Peaks are a sacred place to thirteen tribes in Northern Arizona. The tribes go up to the mountain for religious beliefs, ceremonies, and prayers. Specifically, the tribes pray to the rain gods. If snow machines are put on the mountain, that would defeat the purpose of praying for rain. The holiness of the peaks would be lost for the Native Americans, knowing that their prayers are being disrespected by the Arizona SnowBowl.
Snowboarding was originally created by Tom Sims. Then other people started to catch on and use the idea to make money. Sherman popper then bolted two skis together so he can get his kids out of the house during the
There is nothing better than just getting up on a sunday morning and looking out the kitchen window to see that a couple feet of fresh powder (snow) has accumulated just over night. Fresh snow makes for the best possible riding conditions, especially for the sweet skidoo REV I have purchased over this past summer which is a high end crosscountry snow machine. When i get out on the trails of tug hill ny with my sled, there is no better feeling
They do not have cars. They use dog sleds to get around. Dog sleds are when they have a sled, with all of their things they need to transport, and have dogs pull it. They use very strong dogs, which are huskies. They cannot use dog sleds to go across the Arctic waters.
