Throughout the Middle East soccer is a very prominent, male-dominated sport. Soccer is used by many people as an escape from their real world, and gives them a few hours where they can leave their differences aside and come together as a nation to celebrate their team. Soccer, however, is also very popular in the political realm of the Middle East as it is used by politicians and government leaders to their advantage in countries like Egypt and Turkey. However, not all countries allow or invite soccer into their borders. Countries like Saudi Arabia believe that soccer is practiced as a religion and should be banned because it causes a divide in the Muslim faith. Throughout the Middle East, soccer plays a key factor in their politics as politicians …show more content…
The government in Saudi Arabia believes that “it distracts from the performance of religious duties but acknowledge that there is nothing in Islamic law that would justify banning the sport or imposing restrictive conditions” (Dorsey 94). The government believes that Prophet Mohammed does not support soccer, but they cannot ban it because Sharia Law states that men should be active and exercise. Therefore, Saudi Arabia decided that soccer can be practiced in their country if it is practiced only for the sake of training men for jihad and will be banned if it is has “any detrimental effect on horses and men” or takes up too much of a person’s time and energy (Dorsey 97). This ruling shows that politicians do not enjoy having soccer in their country so they use it as a political and religious force to bring men closer into their Muslim …show more content…
In Israel, soccer star Suan Bnei shows the divide between Palestine and Israel as Israel boos the soccer star based solely off the fact that he identifies as Arab. Suan “symbolizes the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians as well as internal battles in both communities” by representing the historic animosity towards one another is mutual and how they are both “products of the politicization of sports as well as the role soccer has played in the development of separate national identities in historic Palestine” (Dorsey 150). Israel and Palestine’s fight against each other is prevalent in soccer and their fans as fans boo and chant derogatory phrases at each other. The chants symbolize the deep hate that each country has towards each
Some people think that high school football should be banned however, this should not happen for many reasons. Doctors and school boards are debating on if high school football should be banned due to the heath risk. If football is the most popular sport in the U.S. why would we take it away from so many high school students who enjoy playing the game. There is the same risk playing other sports. Even though there is a chance for concussion in football; high school football should not be banned because technology is make the game safer, and it is just as safe as any other
School football is at the edge of being banned. I think you should not ban football because it helps kids all around America.First, you should not ban football it good for socialization. School football keeps kids fit and out of trouble during the school year. That’s why you should not ban football.
The essay American Football is too Dangerous, and Should be Abolished by Dave Bry discusses his opinion on why he thinks American Football should be ended. The author believes that football is immoral. By immoral, he writes that the fans enjoy watching the players play violently. The author also states that the players put their lives at risk because they are given a large compensation or “let-your-parents-retire-and-set-up-the-next-generation-of-your-family-to-go-college-money” (Dave Bry). Overall, the author writes, football is immoral and it should be ended. However, I disagree with the authors point of view.
The passion around the world when it comes to the game of soccer is immeasurable. Known as football in all other nations except Canada and the United States, it is undoubtedly the most popular sport in the world. It is a game played by millions all across the world and in many countries, such as Brazil, soccer contributes to nationalism. Every four years it brings numerous nations together. This coming together, during what is known as the World Cup, is the most viewed sporting event across the globe. Soccer is a sport that has survived many
All over the world, soccer is the main reason how some social classes, religion, and ethnicity are today. Foer believes soccer is everything and it can decide how a country does in politics and economics for years to come.
Banning football is like the Prohibition. Just like with the Prohibition, there is much danger and controversy surrounding football. People that think football should be banned make a good case for the ban because of long-term illnesses such as CTE or ALS which could physically disable a person for life. On the other hand, football teaches life skills such as teamwork or trust. 0
However, soccer sometimes has negative impacts on individuals taking part in the game as spectators or players. Soccer makes a number of individuals intolerant and this intolerance could cause disturbances to other participants in the game. Hooliganism is one of the most popular form of intolerance in the game of soccer where fans from the opposing sides in most instances get into physical confrontations resulting in injuries and in worse cases, deaths. An example was when Egypt faced Algeria in an African Nations Cup tournament where Algerian fans got down into the pitch and engaged the Egyptian fans in a physical fight which left several people dead. These physical fights are not only limited to the fans but the soccer players as well. Many instances have been reported of players getting into physical confrontations with the members of the opposing team (Huggins, 2007). This has resulted in the development of more stringent rules to reduce such incidences. This is evidence of how the popular culture that is soccer elicits emotions among the participant of the game.
The culture of soccer is more than just articles written in sport pages, or rumors about players been transferred from one club to another. It includes a bigger picture that covers many different social, political and economic aspects of the game. In countries where the sport is not that relevant, people refer to it as soccer. In others where the sport is very popular and has been around for a long time, it is referred to as football. When it comes to the sport, there are two very different ideas relevant to how people view it. In said countries where soccer is the national sport, the game is viewed as if it can achieve anything; from having just fun with your friends to helping unite people from around the world. In other countries where the sport is not as much popular, the game is seen as boring and is looked down on. This paper will explore how soccer is growing at such a rapid pace despite the fact that it can be viewed as violent and boring.
Football is a rough sport. Many fans of the game watch it for the hard hits. These hard hits and the potential for injury is part of what makes the game so exciting. Some people say that football is too brutal and should be banned. Parents all over the United States don’t allow their children to play because of the risk of head injuries. Others allow their sons, and every now and then their daughters, to play and risk injury for a chance to earn a college scholarship and for a small percentage of players, the chance to play in the National Football League (NFL).
College football must not be banned because it a part of America and our history. Football has a great history in America and has left so many memories for people all over the nation. The game is a dangerous sport, but the people who play it know the risk. People play the game because they love everything about the game. There are many things that should be fixed with outside the sport, but I think the game should stay the same. If we look at the reasons people want to ban college football there are really two main reasons. Mainly because of all of the concussions and because of the amount of money College football makes the school. However although the team brings in that much money for the school they still receive no money whatsoever.
Not only does the world affect soccer and its ideas, but soccer creates substantial effects on the world as well. Soccer extensively influences politics all over the world, some of its effects positive and some negative. One of the major positive effects the sport can have is its power to stop wars and bring nations together. One prime example of this is in 1967, Pele, a world famous Brazilian soccer star played in an exhibition match in Nigeria . Prior to this event, Nigeria had been in the middle of a civil war, but when Pele arrived to play in the match, the country called a 48-hour cease-fire just to honor Pele and his talent . In 2007 in Ivory Coast, the same thing happened again, only this time, Ivory Coast’s own soccer team united the nation. Ivory Coast had been at war with itself for five years when the national team played in the rebel capital. Both government supporters and rebels were next to each other cheering in the stands because of soccer instead of politics (“Football- A Beautiful Game…”). Another time countries have made peace over soccer was in 2008 and 2009 when Turkey and Armenia played in a World Cup qualifying game. The leader of Turkey and Armenia met to watch the game together consequently thawing relationships between the two countries (Weiner). Soccer can also be a vehicle for various movements, especially in the Middle East, where
The first country I am going to talk about is the U.S. In the U.S. soccer is not a very big deal. It is a historically small sport here.We are too busy scoring touchdowns and making homeruns to have time for Soccer. There are many reasons for why soccer is not very big. For one, there are many, many other distractions. Whereas in some countries, soccer is all they have. No other sports, activities, or hobbies. As Robert Beall, the
The events that occurred at the 1972 Olympics were the result of a long conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Israeli Jews dating to the end of the nineteenth century. Although the two groups have different religions (Palestinians include Muslims, Christians and Druze), religious differences are not the cause of the strife. The conflict began as a struggle over land. From the end of World War I until 1948, the area that both groups claimed was known internationally as Palestine. Following the war of 1948–1949, this land was divided into three parts: the State of Israel, the West Bank (of the Jordan River) and the Gaza Strip. It is a small area—approximately 10,000 square miles, or about the size of the state of Maryland. The situation can’t be reconcilable if one group has exclusive political control over all of it. Jewish claims to this land are based on the biblical promise to Abraham and his descendants, on the fact that the land was the historical site of the ancient Jewish kingdoms of Israel and Judea, and on Jews’ need for a haven from European anti-Semitism. Palestinian Arab claims to the land are based on their continuous residence in the country for hundreds of years and the fact that they represented the demographic majority until 1948. They reject the notion that a biblical-era kingdom constitutes the basis for a valid modern claim. Arabs maintain that since Abraham’s son Ishmael is the forefather of the Arabs, then God’s
Football (known as soccer in the united states) has been affirmed to be the dominant influential and the most popular sport across the world. (Tomlinson, 1994). Thus, it is not weird that organizations that regulate football are considered major forces. In addition, FIFA is considered as powerful sources of trans-global-socio-economic and cultural-ideological force. (sklair, 1991). With regard to Van Dijk (1993), such an impact is to be expected producing the desired effect of organization on discourses and practices. Moreover, organizations such as sport regulators, which are culturally-bound, play a vital role in outstanding access to communication, especially media, television, and internet have played important role in the popularity of
In the same fashion, golf was also excluded from the Olympics. For one thing, this activity has only been in the Olympics for two years. Those years being only 1900 and 1904. There have been many sports that have been in the Olympics for a lot longer than two years. For example, gymnastics have been in it since 1896. Again, swimming has been participating in this huge event since 1896 according to Olympic.org. That makes over 100 years of golf not partaking in the Olympics. On the other hand, they are considering putting golf in for the 2016 Olympics, but many people disagree with this decision. Given these points, golf shouldn't be considered a sport, because it has barely been in the Olympics, and although they might re-enter golf in the
