Social Commentary In Lord The Flies

In the story “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, he shows how the boys lost all innocence and civilization. The boys went from having innocent child minds to taking lives of other people, acting savage, and losing all civilization due to problems on the island. The boys had forgotten where they came from and became savage in order to survive; it was the need of survival that caused the loss of innocence among the boys.

In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. Throughout the novel, they have conflicts between civilization and savagery, good vs. evil, order vs. chaos, and reason vs. impulse. What would it be like if the boys were replaced by a group of girls? Would they behave the same way they did in the novel? I believe that the girls would act in the same behavior as the boys in all ways because, everyone is installed with evil inside them which is their natural instinct, also because in life there is always a power struggle in all manners, and the outcome with the girls would be similar-since both sexes would plan on getting rescued.

In Lord of the Flies the characters wear a social mask that opposes their true feelings. Written by William Golding, the story revolves around a group of boys who become stranded on an island and must depend on themselves to survive. They elect a chief, a boy named Ralph. However, as the story progresses, the group become influenced by Jack, an arrogant choir chapter boy. Intriguingly, although they desire to be with Jack and join his tribe, the boys remain with Ralph for most of the story. The rhetorical triangle, which analyzes a speaker or writer based on three ideas- ethos, pathos, and logos-, helps many to better understand the children’s actions and mentality; ethos focuses on the credibility and ethics of the speaker while pathos concerns how the speaker appeals to the emotions of the audience and logos is about the speaker’s use of evidence to appeal to the audience’s sense of reason. The boys stay with Ralph because of Ralph’s use of ethos but prefer to be with Jack because of Jack’s use of pathos and ethos which shows Golding’s message- humans were masks.

The novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is a story about a group of British school boys that get stuck on an island after they crash on a plane. They are forced to use the resources around them and have to trust each other, and it works out for a while, but while you read on, you begin to recognize a strain between the two main characters, Jack and Ralph, which really spins out of control at the end. William Golding uses British school boys for this novel because those kind of boys are well mannered and don’t seem like the kind of people to turn into uncultured savages. They are expected to have manners and common etiquette. He uses an example of social commentary by using the little ‘uns in the book as not being able to take care of themselves, and that is supposed to represent the society that we live in, that we can’t take care of ourselves without help. Foreshadowing is subtle, uses unimportant details to lead up to the climaxes of the novel, and is the basis of good vs. evil during the novel.

The main theme of Lord of the Flies is that moral nature is not instinctive in mankind. There is a capacity for evil in all people, and their morality is superficial. Nonetheless, it is this moral integrity that must continue in order for a person to be ethical, for society to be maintained, and to keep society from falling in on itself. Society holds everyone together. Without the rules and the structure, evil in everyone becomes more prominent, and ideals, values, and basics of right and wrong are forgotten. Father figures in society are commonly associated with stereotypically masculine traits and mentalities, such as quick-action, dauntless, and dominant ideologies. Ralph’s close alignment with his father suggests that he also emulates these traits. In conversation with Piggy, Ralph believes “when [his father] gets leave he’ll come and rescue [them],” (8) effectively using his father a crutch. These masks come in many forms, and by careful study of events throughout Golding’s novel, one discovers their significance. Physical masks are used by many characters such as Jack and Piggy, and they are perhaps the least ambiguous forms found in the book. The idea of a mask encompasses more than just these literal interpretations, however. Metaphorical masks are used in abundance throughout the book, and much can be revealed about the characters based on how or if they chose to wear their masks. Some may argue that society is controlled by people, but if you step into the light is that really the case. If you were to look at society, really look at it, who is being controlled. Its not society itself, sure people affect the directions society turns, but that is a small group of people who represent societies movement and trends. People do not really affect what society truly is. Society is, as said before, a mental concept, the popular, important figures in the world are the physical representation. The world is full of unique individuals, although everyone is under influence of society. It is subconscious, but always there. These next paragraphs will express how society controls people by elaborating on three main ideas that show up in the book Lord of The Flies. Society controls our actions, we learn from society and use it to try to be in control of others, and it is always there and so we have no idea what to do apart from it.

Lord of the Flies starts out with a plane crashing on an island. The pilot died so the only people that survive this crash were a group of boys. In an attempt to bring together everyone on the island Ralph, one of the main characters, used a shell-like object to get everyone to the beach. After many boys reached the beach Ralph started a meeting. The boys discussed what they should do to stay alive and get rescued. They voted that Ralph should be their leader. Another main character is Jack, he was angered when they voted Ralph to be leader because he thought he could do it better. Ralph's first action as chief was to have everyone help make a large fire to create smoke for nearby ships to see. The boys agreed that this fire should stay going all the time, so that if a ship came by they could be rescued. Jack was assigned the task of hunting the pigs for food. He took the group of boys he came with and became the hunters. After awhile the only thing Jack could think about was hunting. This angered Ralph
