Social Institutions and Inequality
When thinking about social institutions and how they shape society, it becomes clear that they have a very large role in maintaining inequality. The very nature of social institutions make them very hard to change and when an institution begins based on, or allowing for inequality, it can be extremely difficult for things to change.
For example, in the United States there is still a fair amount of gender inequality. This inequality appears most clearly in the form of the wage gap. In 2015, women working full-time made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by men. (Pay Equity, n.d.) There are a few reasons for this pay gap including the fact that women tend to choose lower paying jobs than men. The problem
Living in a society that does not help its people to live comfortably and provide facilities for them to achieve their demands, is harmful. One of these harmful affections is “social inequality” in each diverse society. Social inequality occurs when resources in each society are distributed unevenly, typically through norms of allocation, that engender specific patterns along lines of socially defined categories of persons. The United States contains one of the most common social inequalities for its population and that is “social stratification and mobility” and the government should strictly investigate this social inequality for people who are living in the United States.
People can not put on the news without seeing at least one story about social inequality or injustice, if everyone knows about these inequities why are they not being solved? Inequities are not limited to America, social inequity is a global problem making it extremely important to raise awareness of the topic. Inequities such as racism and sexism impact teenagers in America, but to counteract this persecution authors can use various genres of literature to promote tolerance and reduce the effects of inequities. Racism and sexism violates people’s rights in schools, the workplace, and almost every place in the world. Through the words of authors, society can learn the harmful effects of these inequities, and learn how
Unlike racial inequality, females and males are able to get the same education, “in 2012, 57.2 percent of women ages sixteen and older were in the labor force. In contrast to, 38 percent of working age women were in the labor force in 1960” (Giddens et al 268). Although men and women are getting the same education, there is a big gender gap in the workplace. There is an idea that certain jobs belong to a specific gender, for example women should be secretaries and men should be managers, this is called gender typing (Giddens et al. 269). Women make an average of .79 cents to every dollar a white man makes and that price varied based on ones ethnicity and race. Women are getting paid twenty-one percent less than men for doing the same
Thank you for electing me to this position President Trump, and thank you for everyone that is here today and watching at home. I promise that I will fulfill and faithfully execute the duties that come with this office. I want to establish this new department as the best that federal government and the American people has ever seen. The goal of this department will be helpful and cost effective. I also think that I am the perfect person to help fulfill those obligations. To help the American people and the world to understand what I want to accomplish in my job this term, my main goal is to reduce social inequality in the United States. And I hope the example that we set here in our country can be used as a template for the rest of the world
Life is hard it consists of effort, work, and dedication, all of which make life a bit more livable, but nonetheless the struggle still exists. This struggle is due to the constant tension between acquiring wealth, which apparently makes life worthwhile, while disdaining one’s personal passions, which has become a social norm. This is interesting, because it shows how easily controlled the human mind can be. In reality this is the heart of the argument: do people wish to be controlled by their jobs and those in power, or do they want to be in control of their lives by doing what they please? Therefore, America being as modern and progressive as it may seem harbors and endorses a new kind of slavery that leaves people devoid of their ambitions
This is an microeconomic issue because it affects each individual by limiting their total welfare and opportunity for life improvement. Inequality in itself isn’t the problem it is the overwhelming level of inequality that is limiting the potential well being of the average American citizen. However, there is an argument that inequality isn’t all bad because it is just a byproduct of a thriving free market which naturally improves living standards for the general population. There is also an argument that when equity is forced upon society it limits the right to pursue happiness by limiting the potential spoils of our endeavors. This is thought to limit economic growth by discourages entrepreneurship. Very valid points if we were discussing
The gender pay gap is not just a US issue, it is a concern worldwide. A United Nations report from April of 2015 found that women were paid a quarter less than men globally, and called for all governments to take action to narrow the gap. The White House Council of Economic Advisers recently called the gender pay gap a “stubborn troubling fact” despite women’s gains over the
For U.S. women inequality comes in many different forms, one of them being the income gap between men and women. Also finding a job is harder for women judging as the managerial and higher positional jobs are
Studies continually show a racial, economic, and educational inequality within American society. This bias consistently favors the white population, with opportunities trickling down sparingly to minority populations. Social scientists devote a tremendous amount of time, energy, and financial resources in an effort to learn how to correct these disparities. We propose that one of the most intuitive means of creating this social change is to instill a desire in our children to join the battle for change. To accomplish this goal, we must first understand the factors that impact a student’s desire to get involved in creating social change. We think this understanding is critical for impacting the issue of inequality in America.
Imagine you are a woman, you work very hard every day at work, then you discover out that you are making less money than your male coworker because of your gender. This inequality has been present in our society for many years, and unfortunately it still is. In America women are paid only 78 cents to each dollar a man makes. This is not a problem that only evident in America because studies have shown that the pay gap is actually much larger in South Korea and Russia.
The belief that the United States of America practices democracy and capitalism has become a lie. Through the past century, as the United States political landscape transformed into a plutocracy blindly led by an oligarchy the national wealth gap is now significantly disproportionate in favor of the wealthy minority, thus causing social problems. Acclaimed father of capitalism, Adam Smith, published a book on this four months before the American Declaration of Independence was signed. In this book, he stated necessities of keeping the common good in mind for self interest, general public trust in the justice system, the danger of monopolies, and their role in the dissipation of capitalism. In the early 1990’s, there had been laws in place to
For every dollar that a man make a woman only gets paid seventy-seven cents. They are multiple reasons for this gap in pay. One being that they are different types of jobs that are targeted to a specific gender group. And a “man’s job” will have a higher pay that let’s say a “woman’s job”. Another reason is that people assert importance to one’s decisions in life. For instance, women are pushed to have children and raising them not to have a job. There for women will not get paid as much because they are expected to have children and then the father, or male-figure, is the main source of income for the family. The final reason for the gender disparity in the United Sates is the gender inequality that women suffer because of discrimination. Women are constantly faced with discrimination. Some companies just pay women less because they can and they won’t be called out or punished because of it. This companies are making more money from the lessen women wages. In conclusion, the gender disparity in pay in the United States is above average compared to other places in the world, but it still has a long way to go till it reaches gender equality in pay. (Macionis, 2014, pp
Currently in the United States, there is the contrast between two entirely different worlds. This difference is possible to observe it in almost all States. In the United States, there is a level of poverty that groups (Latinos and blacks) minorities represent the majority. This sector, which has little income, accounts for a significant portion of the country. One of the illegal immigrants is represented in this group.
Not many people realize, but there are many social inequalities shaping our everyday lives. Sexual orientation discrimination discriminates against transgender and homosexual people, and many people in America are affected by it. Whether someone is transgender, gay, or a lesbian, they are looked upon as an oddball or a freak. It is important to bring awareness to the topic of social inequality and persecution, especially sexual orientation discrimination, because various genres of literature can be used to help change society's views of tolerance and acceptance, it impacts teenagers in modern America, and affects readers when learning about social inequality.
My belief is that the refusal to acknowledge the existence of negative behavioral attitudes by dominant groups, demonstrated through prejudices, stereotypes, bias, bigotry and discriminatory actions have made inequality the biggest negative impact American society. Racial and sexual inequality in the workplace is practiced to keep subordinates personal worth, wealth and reward disproportionate. Wealth is power.
