The article I choose was Researching Social Work Practice Close Up: Using Ethnographic and Mobile Methods to Understand Encounters between Social Worker, Children and Families by Harry Ferguson from the British Journal of Social Work. Ferguson, discusses the challenges of research the face to face interactions with social workers, children and families. Ferguson felt there was a need to better understand the dynamic of social works, children and families, due to “reviews into cases were children have died have shown that social workers were present with the children when they were injured but did not effectively engage with them” (Ferguson pg 154). Ferguson shows that is possible to observe these face to face encounters while being ethical.
When working in a field of expertise the experts in that area need to know what defines that field. Social work, with its roots over a hundred years old, started out simply offering assistance to others, has grown and changed, and is currently reconnecting with its roots (Bisman, 2004). Bisman (2004) emphasizes the importance of being an advocate of justice and keeping the field focused on the “social” part of social work. This push to keep social work focused on the needs of others defines social work today. Social work focuses on providing aide to the needy and increasing awareness of those that are oppressed.
For this paper, I have decided to research two social work theories and how those theories apply to residents in long term care facilities. The primary focus will be those residents who are alert, oriented, and showing minimal symptoms of dementia.
The class SW 6030 Human Development and the Social Environment has brought new insights and makes me see some topics in a different perspective. The critical reflection paper number one will integrate different concepts that I learned so far in this class.
Anderson, L. E., Weston, E. A., Doueck, H. J., Krause, D. J. (2002). The child-centered social worker and the sexually abused child: Pathway to healing. Social Work Journal, 47, (4), 368-378. This article focuses on providing treatment and assistance through the judicial process from child-centered social workers to minimize the potential opportunity for system induced trauma.
Setting a boundary is an important core value in the field of social work. According to the Social Work Code of Ethics, “social workers should provide and represent themselves as competent only within the boundaries of their education, training, license, certification, consultation received, supervised experience, or other relevant professional experience” (Code of Ethics of the NASW). Professional helpers are generally compassionate people, but they also need to recognize the value of setting limits. This was the case when I worked as an adjunct instructor, which included providing individual tutoring. Sara Towns (name changed), a student and distant cousin, evoked the possible clouding of boundaries. For new social workers, this kind of reflection may be helpful as they define their roles. Through a series of professional and personal experiences with Sara, I learned that boundaries must be maintained to foster a positive relationship and prevent potential conflicts.
Progressivism as a political movement involving social workers began to crossover to a cultural movement within the social work field. This crossover led to two major tensions within the field at the time. The first tension was ideological, among the early social workers. The second tension was between the ideas of progressivism intersecting with the needs of the social work field.

The article I have selected is; ‘Baby P and Victoria Climbie tragedies synonymous with reforms to system’. The reason I have selected this article is because I found these two stories very interesting with the fact these two names have been reported about so many times across the media with the horrific child abuse they incurred. I also like the fact that after these two tragedies occurred there has been many reforms to the system to ensure fewer tragedies like these can occur in the future for example, social workers are making more frequent visits to children who may be at risk of any child abuse. I will structure my essay with beginning to explain the complexities and rewards for social workers then refer to the two children; baby P and Victoria on their backrounds. Afterwards, I will analyse references and how their impact effects the social services and viewers also. Finally, I will link all my findings together and I will discuss how my understanding of social work has changed as a result of undertaking this essay. Throughout my assignment the aspects I will focus on are how the media has reflected social services in these two cases of baby P and Victoria and how this effects viewer’s perspectives and the social work dilemmas and ethical issues raised by The Telegraph article.
State the significance to social work practice and social policy: Food insecurity and malnutrition is an endless pressing issue on the macro level of social work across the nation. This is a significance part of a social workers job is to address these issues on a larger scale. Social workers incorporate multisector strategies to address this issue through different agencies hoping to develop evaluations that would produce results of the need base for nutritional and food security programs, which leads to funding for these programs as well. The purpose of the social work profession is to help all persons who are in need of service, whether they are being discriminated against, are impoverished, or are defenseless in the face of crises. The actions of social workers have dated back hundreds of years before the profession was even in existence. In the past hundred years there have been numerous men and women who have shown great courage in helping the less fortunate; these men and women have sacrificed themselves for the needs and service of others. One man in particular forever changed New York City and the profession of social work, Charles Loring Brace.
The profession I am going to base this essay on is Social Work. The standards that this line of work follows are set by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC). Social workers have to follow these standards so they can provide the best possible care and enable the HCPC to see where improvements are needed to prevent serious issues from arising. Social workers have to follow a number of different acts as part of their job, these are learnt when they complete the initial training. It is compulsory for social workers to complete a certain amount of hours of training each year; this is to ensure they are kept up to date on all the standards and changed in procedures and also to make sure they can provide the best possible care to the

When being in the field of social work, a major problem that comes up a lot is depression and suicidal thoughts or actions. Another problem that comes up a lot is drug abuse. These two issues also cross paths very often and can be found in the same person. Charles Ausherman has had to deal with this many times. Throughout his career he has had many different positions dealing with social work. He has worked in a prison psych unit, counseled people with these issues, and has even taught others the skill of counseling and social work.
