The United States is a built on a social structure that categorizes people based on their status of wealth, power and prestige (Sigel, 2017, pp. 191). Everyone has a goal in life, some may be different from others, but overall, what we all strive for is health, wealth, and success. As quoted by James Truslow Adams, the American Dream refers to “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement”. While there are many people who are successfully living the American Dream, many Americans are not receiving to same ability to be successful. Children growing up in poverty and minorities are not given the same opportunities as those who grew up in middle and upper class families and neighborhoods. While there may be some resources available to youths and minorities to break the chain of the generations of poverty, some may not have the ability to use these resources. Socialization is the interactions people have with various organization, institutions, and processes of society (Sigel, 2017, pp. 234). This explains that most people are influenced by their surroundings including their family relationships, peer group associations, educational experiences, and interactions with authority figures including police, teachers, and employers.
