The United States is a built on a social structure that categorizes people based on their status of wealth, power and prestige (Sigel, 2017, pp. 191). Everyone has a goal in life, some may be different from others, but overall, what we all strive for is health, wealth, and success. As quoted by James Truslow Adams, the American Dream refers to “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement”. While there are many people who are successfully living the American Dream, many Americans are not receiving to same ability to be successful. Children growing up in poverty and minorities are not given the same opportunities as those who grew up in middle and upper class families and neighborhoods. While there may be some resources available to youths and minorities to break the chain of the generations of poverty, some may not have the ability to use these resources. Socialization is the interactions people have with various organization, institutions, and processes of society (Sigel, 2017, pp. 234). This explains that most people are influenced by their surroundings including their family relationships, peer group associations, educational experiences, and interactions with authority figures including police, teachers, and employers. The American Dream promises equal opportunity and acceptance for every citizen in America, but sometimes that does not seem to be true to people of an opposing race. Although some people claim that America still provides access to the American Dream due to all of the different opportunities that our government and schools offer, others believe there are some setbacks that can occur while trying to achieve one's goals; such as equality struggles within race and gender.
As poverty grows throughout the United States, it continues to make it more difficult for our future leaders to become successful if they do not have the equal opportunity to pursue their personal American Dream. David H. Freedman discusses his thoughts on the American Dream and how poverty can get in the way of such success by asserting, “In the view of proponents, that money could also benefit people who aren’t poor but aren’t affluent either. They’d gain access to higher education, an escape route from oppressive jobs and relationships, greater opportunity to invest in their children’s well-being and education, and time to spend on artistic or other mostly nonpaying endeavors” (David H. We have all heard of this intense rollercoaster ride that we are on called the American Dream. The term was coined by James Truslow Adams in 1931 defining it as “dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement.” Since it’s arrival, the Dream has evolved from a pursuit towards “freedom, mutual respect, and equal opportunity” (Shiller) to later one of greed described by Shiller as being “excessively lustful about homeownership and wealth” beginning in the 1960s. Traditionally, the American Dream included features of a nuclear family, that is one with a breadwinning father, a housewife, and two kids, owning a white picket fence home, thriving without financial worries, and a happy family. There has been a shift in focus for the Dream caused by the Millennial generation and in turn they have included features that place an emphasis on equality in all aspects of their lives from family life to the workplace placing their own twist on the Dream. The American Dream has evolved over time to include equal opportunities, college education, and happy family.

Having the chance to accomplish the American Dream is a freedom that most people desire. The American Dream is in fact real, and many have reached this set of ideals with success. However, the diversity that this country is known for places various people at a disadvantage when trying to reach the American Dream. Not everyone starts off with the same privileges as others. For example, as discussed in class with the privilege walk, lots of minorities are at a loss compared to average white American citizens. Education, jobs, living conditions, or basic opportunities are disproportionate when compared to white Americans. Going off of education, many minorities are not fortunate to get a decently standard education and receive poorly hired teachers who do not care about quality education, as seen in the “Waiting for Superman” video shown in class. In turn, this effects the types of jobs they obtain since the majority of higher paying ones require bachelor’s degrees or higher.

The American Dream has always been a driving force in the lives of Americans. It has become a foundation of ideals and hopes for any American or immigrant.
