Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be done to stop it.

Social class is a division of a society based on social and economic status which can include levels of wealth, success, power of authority, and influence. Status is can be defined or grouped having common economic, cultural, or political interests.

Socioeconomic Status is where a particular person or group of people stand in regards to social class. The main measurement that determines one's socioeconomic status is level of education, occupation and income. Although it may not be considered a factor in child development, socioeconomic status can actually play a huge role in determining what kind of adolescent a child develops into. It can influence a child’s morals, self-esteem, grades and many more aspects of a child's life. Socioeconomic status can play a role in determining where a person resides, the occupation they end up getting, their education and their income as well. So, although one’s socioeconomic status is technically made up of these aspects, one can be born into a low socioeconomic status which could result in them continuing to have one throughout their life. It is a cycle that one must break in order to change the outcome. Low socioeconomic status can result in child poverty. Child poverty over the years has risen and fallen but has remained consistently apparent in America. Child poverty can have detrimental effects on developing children and adolescents. It may influence the way they are raised, taught, cared for and many more aspects of the child's life which are important for successful development. Poverty in the United States has been a very big issue throughout its history. Poverty is both an economic condition and a social concept. Poverty in the United States first took place in the 19th century and till this day. Poverty was caused by people being selfish and not allowing everyone to have a chance on being successful. Poverty took a big hit from the Great Depression to the Great Recession that led millions of people down. Since then the poverty rate has been going up and down, never keeping a steady pace. “In the late 1950s, about 22 percent of Americans nearly 40 million people were on poverty” ("Poverty"). Imagine living on the streets. Knowing that you can not provide enough for your family. Barely hanging on. About 50,144,955 people in America feel this everyday. These people are in poverty, the state of being extremely poor. This one issue is what is holding us back as a whole. It needs to be eradicated in order to move forward, but we need to start small. We need to start in our state, Connecticut. There are many things that can be done to stop poverty, and it needs to start now. Poverty is holding America and the world back, in order to move forward together, it needs to be put under control through giving to the poor and getting voices heard.

Poverty in America is severe. One third of our population lives under the poverty line. The poverty line being a family of three or more surviving on $36,000 or less. This transfers to 20.5 million people. Seven million of these people being women with children. 6.7% of our population has an income less than 9,000 for a family of three. These numbers are astounding and they are only on the rise. This means that more families are going without food. This means more children are starving and getting sick and dying. One in four families are going without food. This is a huge problem. Everyone says that poverty is a problem but most people are ignorant to the fact that it is beyond our comprehension how big it is.

Poverty is an important issue in America today and in the past, to make our country better we need to fix the rate of poverty in America. There are families that wonder, not what but if they are going to eat each day of the year because people just cannot support their families. Maybe it is the fact that they do not make enough money, or they do not have a job to make money. Sometimes they just blow away money on gambling, drinking, drugs, and other bad examples. However, there are hardworking people that try their best to support themselves and or their families.

Another study concerning socioeconomic status was done by a group of researchers including Vonetta Dotson, Melissa Kitner-Triolo, Michele Evans, and Alan Zonderman. They examined test scores from low and high socioeconomic status African Americans and Whites in order to determine if socioeconomic status and/or race affect cognitive abilities. The researchers hypothesized that proficiency in literacy would be a better predictor of cognitive abilities than years of education, especially for people of low socioeconomic status and African Americans (Dotson, Kitner-Triolo, Evans, & Zonderman, 2009). In order to measure the theory, cognitive tests from participants were examined and demographic questions were asked to determine incomes and race.

In the United States, there are about more than forty-six million people living in impoverished conditions today. Poverty is a major conflict issue in this country amongst people who are part of the lower class because American families always had a hard time making ends meet, even before the Great Recession began. We have a huge moral obligation as individuals and as a society to reduce poverty. We should increase social programs, minimum wage, food stamps and educational programs, employ the homeless and much more. Research shows that children from families of poverty have more stress leading to mental damage. Many people work for the minimum wage and even the hardest of workers only make a little money. Why is it that we help mainly the people who are lazy and do not deserve it? If anything cut welfare and increase minimum wages. Society as a whole needs to be motivated and encouraging as a community. The military should get cuts and then we could increase minimum wage and welfare. Poverty in America is an immense issue to be considered, and it influences many people in different ways. Being poor in America can have a whole bunch effects in your life as you try to survive. However, there are solutions that can be done to stop more people from living in poverty. To stop poverty from increasing more each day we all need to get together and help poor people get food, find jobs, and a home or place to live in.

    The declination of poverty in America will bring our great nation one step closer to perfection.  But achieving this perfection will by no means be a simple task.  To achieve this dream, the American Dream, we need to come together as a nation and help the impoverished.  To do this, we must improve the welfare system, create new jobs, and not allow this to interfere with our everyday lives.  If we can accomplish this tremendous task, then we can improve American society as a
