Every individual person in this world has many different sociological influences on their life. All varying from education, religion, friends, and even the workplace. Some people may have a ton of things that influence their lives and others may only have a few, all depending on that individual. In my life particularly, the three biggest societal influences are education, family, and lastly my extracurricular activities.
Education can be a huge part in some cultures, when it can also be a very small part in some cultures. Our American culture education is huge. Kids spend their lives in school from when they are four years old in preschool until they are 18 years as a senior in highschool. Those years are all spent six hours a day five days a week throughout the year. After high school people have the option to continue their education and go to college if they would prefer to. College may go upwards to 12 more years depending on the degree that certain individual is pursuing. In our American Culture it is bad if you don’t have a college degree. People tend to think that people that don’t continue to go to college are not as intelligent when really they could be just as smart as anyone else. Every human has a right to an education. College has an importance that is so popular but that importance has a value. But as technology is constantly advancing and computers are running almost anything, is a college education really necessary? The purpose of this paper is to analyze my societal influences in my life. A societal influence is a person’s emotions, opinions, or behaviors effected by others (WebFinance, 2017) (Macionis, 2017). The three greatest societal influences that effect my life are education, playing sports through the Michigan High School Athletic Association, and religion. I believe it does not matter wat race religion, or gender you are, t matters how you are as a person on the inside. The following paragraphs will analyze and explain how these societal factors affect my outlook on society and influence my everyday life.
Everyone has a dream or a goal of what they want to be when they grow up. Yet it is up to each individual to live up to their dreams and accomplish them. In order to help accomplish them, education is needed. In the United States, the education system is ranked towards the bottom of the ladder in standardized test score rankings. How can this be? It is because the education system is taken for granted. In other countries that outrank the United States, education is not readily available to just anyone. In many cases, it is unaffordable for families to send their children to school, so they instead send them to work in factories and other means of employment. In the United States, education is free to all, thanks to taxes, and even in some cases colleges can be easily affordable through financial aid, scholarships, and loans. Residents of other countries often come or strive to come here to get an education. America has the most universities than any other nation. People who arrive here to learn from overseas appreciate what is being offered here because they know they are better off here than back at home. When I take the time to reflect on what social forces have impacted my life a lot comes to mind. I was born and raised in San Jose, California which is a very multicultural area with people of all ethnic backgrounds. There was a specific juncture in my life that impacted me at a very young age. When I was about 7 or 8 years old my mom took my friend Zac and I to Burger King. While we were sitting there eating and just talking about typical things a 7 or 8 year old would talk about an elderly caucasian male approached us. Now looking back on the situation it was apparent that he was either drunk or under the influence of something. He then proceeded to start throwing racial slurs at me, and started questioning us. In his words “ why a white would be friends with a black “ in a belligerent manner. He continued, so mom called the cops and he was arrested for public intoxication. At the time I was baffled as to why he would say such things, especially to a child. I now realize in his socialization period it was a social constraint for caucasians to be friends with a minority or even sit next to or converse with one. Its unfortunate that people still haven 't come to accept social change, but more importantly I was aware of how prejudice some people are at a very young age due to this instance. The concept of using school and information to put different people on a level playing field is a noble but misguided attempt at social equality. Education undoubtedly affects the position of people in society positively, while creating an outlet to educate the ignorant, it becomes problematic when education is not an equal opportunity for everyone.
