Analysis of Newspaper Article According to Sociological Principles
The article being analyzed looks at the lack of consent in medical experiments as an ethical violation. According to Arthur Caplan, who heads the division of medical ethics at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, “research without consent absolutely should be the last resort” (Ungar 2015). However, in some cases, the decision is not as clear-cut. For example, at the University of Pittsburgh, there is a study that is testing the practice of giving patients plasma to help their blood clot when they are being transported to the hospital. In many cases, such patients are unconscious and do not give consent, but the administration of plasma can help save their lives. One of the strategies being applied is giving non-willing participants medical bracelets that will communicate to doctors for them not to be enrolled for medical experiments (Ungar 2015).

Specific bodies oversee the regulation of code of ethics and in sociology, the American Sociology Association (ASA) maintains the code of ethics. One of the principles observed in sociology regarding the code of ethics is the duty of a researcher to obtain an informed consent where the study participant is informed of responsibilities and risks of partaking in the study (OpenStax 2013). The article by Ungar (2015) presents a major social problem in that the ethical rights of the participating patients are violated and such medical experiments can result in negative health effects. Another aspect of ethical rights comes in the handling of the data obtained. The data must be kept private and the identity of the participant protected. When analyzing the article, the study of sociology and study of human behavior helps appreciate the social predicament that both patients and medical professionals
