Somalia is a long, narrow country that wraps around the Horn of Africa. It has the longest coast of any African nation, bordering on both the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The inland areas are predominantly plateaus, with the exception of some rugged mountains in the far north. The northern region is more arid, whereas the southern portion of the country receives more rainfall. Many Somalis are nomadic or semi-nomadic herders, some are fishermen, and some farmers. Mogadishu is the capital and largest city. Somalia is composed of a single, homogeneous ethnic group. Although Somalis may differ in nuances of local lifestyle, they share one language, religion, and culture, and trace their heritage to a common ancestor.

Over the past 20 years Somalia as a country has been in turmoil and constant fighting. Today’s Somalia is still a harsh environment and the people are unforgiving as they too are trying to survive this oasis of violence. Considering Somalia in the news now we see after years of fighting and trying to support this country with food, water, and security it has progressed but not quickly. It has been a battle for any support to the country essentially taking two steps forward and one step back.

Somalia was colonized by many different countries. It was colonized by Britain, France, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Italy. Egypt had taken over the coast in 1875. Britain colonized it in 1887. They did this because they wanted to guard the Suez canal. France took over a part of Somalia because they didn’t get any land in Egypt. In the early 1900’s, Italy gained control of Southern Somalia. They had control of Southern Somalia until July 1st, 1960 when they gained their own independence. Life during these colonial times was bad in some places but not all. They were treated unfairly in most places and their individual culture was not given respect. This was mainly due to Europe wanting it only for the resources they would get. Italy treated them very well and fairly for a while until they decided to make the natives adjust to Italian law. They treated them well at first because they were trying not to disturb the colonies.

The proliferation of secessionist provinces and “states” is the most serious problem to the states and international bodies today. Somali is at present recognized as an independent and sovereign state in spite of over twenty years of collapse and repeated military and political involvements by other states and international bodies. However, “a slim slice of Somali-inhabited territory on the southern shore of the Gulf of Aden, declare its independence in 1991 and ticks almost all the boxes of statehood ( )”. Somaliland introduced its secession in 1991 and has operated as a less independent country since then; it has its own Government system and constitution. It even has a central bank that prints its own currency called Somaliland shilling. The country is peaceful and the population is about three million and most of the population is Muslim. The world, however, has refused to recognize Somaliland as an independent country. Not wanting to encourage numerous other separatist movements, Western countries remained dedicated to supporting the embattled Transitional Federal Government within Somalia, which opposes the separation.
