The purpose for writing this essay is to demonstrate how gentrification is shaping the Culture and identity for Halrmites from the socio-economic perspective. Harlem has changed dramatically over the last two decades due to improvement in housing stock and outside investments into the community. However, in my essay, I articulated my ideas toward the economic aspect of gentrification because gentrification is driven by class, not race. My audience would be the lower income Harlem residents who have been displaced or on the verge of displacement because their wealth is not contributing to the economy. The people who have been preserving the cultural identity of Harlem for decades now forced to leave the community. I tried my best to connect a broader audience by explaining the deteriorated housing condition of Harlem and how it led to gentrification. This will help reader
At the northern most party of New York City, the Bronx borough shares the same boundaries as Bronx County. The population within its borders is an estimated 1.5 million people. Further, the borough is considered the most diverse area in the entire United States. Around 46% of its population is Caucasian, while 43% are black or African American. The remaining population is made up of Hispanics, American Indians, Asians, and Pacific Islanders.
Over the years, Bensonhurst has diversified and experienced a remarkable amount of change, especially in terms of the population. Bensonhurst’s diversity is not limited to just those particular ethnic groups mentioned above, there are also a lot of Albanians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and more. According to the statistics of the residents in Bensonhurst & Bath Beach Puma, NY, the most common country of origins is China, Ukraine, and Italy (“BENSONHURST & BATH BEACH PUMA, NY,” n.d.). While, there is a high relative number of people born in Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan. Whereas the most common race or ethnicity is white, Asian, and then Hispanic (“BENSONHURST & BATH BEACH PUMA, NY,” n.d.). This once again reinforces the idea that the authenticity of Bensonhurst is changing, considering the Italian population is no longer as prominent and predominant over other ethnic groups. New residents are replacing former residents and thus, causing a lot of diversity and modification. Currently, Bensonhurst, for the most part, is divided based on ethnicity. The 18th Avenue section is highly populated with Asians, whereas the “northern blocks, adjacent to Borough Park” are popular with Orthodox Jews (Mooney, 2011). The southern blocks, near the ocean as well as the Bath Beach part are popular with Russians. The division based on ethnic groups suggests a restrictive kind of mentality in which people would rather stick with their own ethnicity rather than engage and reside with those
The gentrification process can be seen through the demographic and physical changes of the South Parkdale neighborhood. Gentrification is “the invasion of working-class areas by the upper- and middle-classes, who upgrade shabby, modest housing into elegant residences, resulting in the displacement of all, or most of the original working-class occupiers”. (Lyons, 1996) South Parkdale is a neighborhood in downtown Toronto that faces problems of gentrification. This problem has been ongoing since the nineteen fifty’s’.
Sunset Park is located in the western part of Brooklyn. The 24.5-acre public Sunset Park was founded in the 1890s. The park’s elevated location allows visitors spectacular views of New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. Sunset Park is said to be one of Brooklyn’s most heterogeneous neighborhoods, composing of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Chinese. Located west of 5th Avenue is the most populated Hispanic area, while the center of the Chinese population extends from 7th Avenue east to Borough Park. Between 5th and 7th Avenues is mixed.
Our next adventure was Brooklyn, NY. Although this borough was just a 20-minute train ride away I never really had many opportunities to visit it. I was excited to visit the borough because growing up I always heard that it had the best food in all of New York City. The borough is also known as Kings County and is home to nearly three million people. This makes Brooklyn the second most populous boroughs in New York. It is said that if the Borough were an independent city it would be the third most populous city in the U.S. (191).
New York City’s population shifted as dramatically during the decade of the 1970’s as at any time in the history of the city. In 1970, the city government experienced severe financial strains and near bankruptcy until it was bailed out by the federal government. During this time, 77% of people living in NYC identified themselves as white. However, that percentage declined to about 44% of the population by present time. Two factors can cause population growth or decline. The first factor is the difference between births and deaths and the other one is migration. Between 1970 to 1980 there were more births than deaths among New Yorkers. However, the city’s decline in population was because more people moved out of the city than move into it.
Saudi Arabia, Mecca specifically, is the target for about. Therefore, it represents a spiritual symbol and has a religious importance for what it holds of religious temples and locations (Butt, 2010). On the other hand, the United States of America is referred to as a melting pot because it is the most desirable destination for immigrants globally. For this reason, the united states of America is distinct by the variety of its demographics. Hence, gentrification in Al haram is driven by religious proposes, but gentrification of Adams Morgan results in reformation of the neighborhood residents composition of races. In short, each country’s background has a dominant effect on the process of its gentrification.
Although many people in the city of New York would say that gentrification is terrible for the people and the communities, they might not actually see what good it can bring. But first...what is gentrification? Gentrification is processed in which renewal and rebuilding bring in middle-class or wealthy folks into bad, run-down neighbourhoods which happen to displace the residents who were already living there. Sure, it’s an economic factor but it could also be a social component.

East Flatbush is a middle class residential neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Looking at the community health profiles of 2015 for East Flatbush indicated that Asthma is a huge problem in this community. After World War II east Flatbush was largely populated by immigrant Jews and Italians, then in the 1960s by African Americans. Now this area is flooded with West Indian immigrants such as Haitians, Jamaicans, Trinidadians, St. Lucians, Grenadians, Panamanians, Bajans, Dominican, and Guyanese groups. Asthma has no cure, you could be feeling just fine but the disease is still there and can appear again at any time. More than 5,000 people die annually because of asthma. Asthma hospitalization rates have been the highest in the midst of black children but the death rates for asthma were consistently highest among blacks from ages 15
The neighborhood that I chose was consider one of the oldest neighborhood in Brooklyn- Flatbush. To be honest, I didn’t know must about this neighborhood prior to this research. The only thing that I knew about was when I first came to the United States; Flatbush was a pretty bad neighborhood to venture at night. The reason was because, we could always heard in the media about shooting happened inside that neighborhood. One of my relative even told me that don’t enrolled in Brooklyn College when I was still in high school because the area around wasn’t safe at all. Since then, I had a bad impression about Flatbush. In recent years, because of the gentrification, the neighborhood of Flatbush like many other gentrified neighborhood for instance
The poor neighborhoods are the ones with more needs, need better education, need a better relationship with police officer and especially need better communication with each other, if these issues can be changed then the community little by little will begin to come together. As in Urban Acupuncture states, “street sellers everywhere share a common identity. They infuse sound, aroma, and color into the city streets in a way that defines and enlivens our everyday lives” (Lerner, 40). There’s a diversity of cultures in many communities of Brooklyn, there’s lots of street sellers who sell products from jewelry to cultural food. They usually have these food trucks and the aroma from these trucks is what attracts a diversity of people, the food sometimes takes you to your origin of country. A way to improve a community one of the easiest thing to do, but some just ignore is recycling; recycling is a start to fixing the community, keeping the community clean. People should think about Urbanism making sure that the air is fresh, in order to accomplish this, community
Hogwarts Elementary School, located within the town of La Puente, is part of the Rowland Unified School District which also encompasses the neighboring cities of Rowland Heights, Walnut, City of Industry and West Covina. The area is characterized by different residential units with about 17 different project complexes, single- family and multiple family houses that are finely planned and constructed with bricks and a couple apartments and a co-op apartment complex. This area is the first to be developed with row houses in the Bronx. The neighborhood has a shopping center than spans across 4 blocks in length and over 6 blocks in width and is popularly known as “the Hub”. The shopping center consists of small scale business, franchises, and currently a few designer stores. Aside “the Hub”, the community is scantly populated with corner stores commonly known as Bodegas; with about 4 supermarkets. Mott haven is a busy place which is
Over the years, Bensonhurst has encountered a lot of drastic, significant changes in regards to its historical authenticity. The physical layout and social construct have been convoluted and molded into a new kind of authenticity. Thus, leading to the neighborhood’s transformation from “Little Italy of Brooklyn” to “Brooklyn’s Second Chinatown.” The inevitable metamorphosis occurred due to gentrification and reurbanization, which subsequently led to new residents, changes in the physical and social layout, and commercial buildings. Eventually, the aesthetic tastes of the new residents became dominant and altered the culture of the urban place. Unsurprisingly and evidently, Bensonhurst has undergone a cultural, social, and economic transformation. Essentially, to determine the full extent of the changes and the impact of those attributes on my neighborhood, I interviewed my mother, aunt, and neighbor. Particularly, I was intrigued to learn about their situation and sentiments regarding Bensonhurst. I wanted to receive some insight on the influence of gentrification and reurbanization on its residents through their eyes. Most importantly, the main focus was on the soul of the urban place to understand the death and life of an authentic urban place.
