Our next adventure was Brooklyn, NY. Although this borough was just a 20-minute train ride away I never really had many opportunities to visit it. I was excited to visit the borough because growing up I always heard that it had the best food in all of New York City. The borough is also known as Kings County and is home to nearly three million people. This makes Brooklyn the second most populous boroughs in New York. It is said that if the Borough were an independent city it would be the third most populous city in the U.S. (191). The Dutch occupied Brooklyn in 1634 and till this day the area has found to still have a huge amount of Dutch influence in architecture. However, in 1664 the British had later conquered what had been developing into the New Netherlands. The British later recognized it as the Providence of New York and named the borough after King Charles II (192). Our first stop in the borough of Brooklyn was Coney Island. I have never visited the area before and was excited that after 20 years of living in New York City I was able to visit the seaside community. Coney island was once an island adjacent to Kings County. However, what was once small creek that separated island from the mainland was later connected by landfill creating a peninsula. It had received its name from when the Dutch settled into the land. It was called the island Conyne Eylandt or the Rabbit Island since it is shaped like a rabbits foot. The area is known for its seaside resorts
New York City’s old slum neighbourhood, the Five Points, was notoriously known for its vice and crimes. The first organized crime group in New York City was the Forty Thieves which was led by Edward Coleman, started in 1825, in the back of a grocery store. The Dead Rabbits were an Irish gang in the Five Points area, and are most known for the riot they caused in 1857. The Eastman Gang were a Jewish group in the Five Points area, which began in the late nineteenth century, and were the rival of the Five Points Gang. The Five Points Gang was another group, started by Paul Kelly and included future famous mobsters. In Five Points, where most of New York City’s crime started, it also started some of history’s most notorious gangs, and mobsters.
The first colony in the region where New Amsterdam would be built was at first just a Dutch trading post and fort. In 1624 Dutch traders under the Dutch West India Company established the colony of New Amsterdam for their fur trading and other goods. The Dutch traders came to this region from the Netherlands to skin fur of exotic beast. Others later came to the settlement to protect the fort and to farm for the soldiers. Most of New Amsterdam population were mainly traders, soldiers, and some farmers. The New Amsterdam Colony lasted for 40 years before it was taken by British and renamed New York.

I was up raised in a tight-knit Jewish community, in a suburban county in Florida. Having briefly visited New York City as a child, I become fascinated with the great city. I was simply amazed with the cultural vitality of New York, relative to the modest diversity in my neighborhood.

The Dutch in 1609 sent an English sea captain named Henry Hudson, who came to the findings of Delaware Bay and New York on his voyage. Along this land would be referred to New Netherland. 1626 the Dutch would also purchase Manhattan from the Native Indians. In Manhattan the Dutch would establish a territory called New Amsterdam to inhabit, New Amsterdam became the capital of New Netherland. Dutch settlements would have freedom of business and religious practices unlike the strict beliefs and government other colony’s pursed, New Netherland was filled with diversity; in addition would cause different prospective on government and living. In 1624, New York was founded by the Dutch and named New Netherlands and the capital, Fort Orange (now called Albany), was bought by Peter Minuit a year later. Then in 1664 New Netherlands was taken over by the British with practically no resistance from Peter Stuyvesant, the governor at the time, and renamed it New York. In 1673 the Dutch took New York back without firing a bullet because their governor went back to England for a bit, but the English took it back
In 1609, Henry Hudson accidentally discovered a river (known today as the Hudson River). And in 1624, the Dutch settled by the Hudson River. Peter Minuit founded New Amsterdam, in 1626. Finally in 1664, the colony surrendered to the English and was renamed to New York. New York was named after the king's brother, the Duke of York
The Netherlands permitted so many non-Dutch to settle there, because few Danes desired to leave their country. Thus the Dutch East India Company recruited settlers from a number of European countries and transported African slaves. In 1664 the British seized New Amsterdam and renamed it New York, the city retained its remarkable mix of people. It is only fitting that New York would become the most diverse city in the world.
Many historic places have gone through numerous transformations from the start of its creation, during or after. The site underwent multiple stages of transformations. The “birth” of the location took place 1829. The Staten Island Farm Colony began with only two acres of land. With success came the need of more land, which led to another purchase of land that vastly expanded its territory. The ninety- one acre purchase of land allowed the colonists to cultivate more crops. There was so much land that there was a lot more room to experiment with. The Staten Island Farm Colony originally started as a poor farm ("NYC Farm Colony & Seaview Hospital”). The idea of this expansion came shortly after the realization that the colony was growing in

New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low-income neighborhoods that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City’s infrastructure funding is limited in lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist’s areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low-income area infrastructure problems that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn, and South Bronx are low-income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads, plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests.
