INTRODUCTION Many people use social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to share information on numerous topics, ranging from politics, sports, and personal stories. This information has been collected and analyzed by researchers for market prediction, mining the opinions, etc. One of the most important properties of social platforms is that they allow people to communicate in real-time. During a crisis or a natural disaster, people on social media tend to easily believe contents of postings related to the events, and Re-tweet the postings with hoping them to be reached to many other users. There are both sides positive and negative to sharing information related to emergency situations on social media. People are well-informed about the situation in real-time, and most of this information is true, or believed to be true. At the same time, there are malicious users who understand the tendency and post misinformation such as spam and fake messages with expecting wider propagation. One good example of this is malicious users tweeted fake images attached with relevant messages. These are in-turn, shared or Re-tweeted by others users unknowingly (with the intent to help others). We will be analyzing 2 papers here, both of them using twitter content. The first paper aims to highlight the role of Twitter to spread fake images during Hurricane Sandy (2012). In-depth characterization is performed of tweets sharing fake images. Along with that, different
Out of the variety of news sources such as TV, radio, or newspapers, one of the popular sources in today’s world is social media. People are getting addicted to and can’t live without social media such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. They use social media as of where they can post their status but also where they can receive a lot of different news. While social media are spreading any kinds of news such as trend, celebrity or even politics, people easily get the information that is not true called “fake news.” The fake news raises the major problem in social media as the news source. Once people see the news, they tend to believe and share it. Liking can spread out fake news in a second. When people like the news, the activity
Besides friends using social media to connect with other friends or families keeping in touch with other relatives who are at a distance, in the recent years, terrorists have taken advantage of social media and used it as a platform to threaten and send jaw dropping messages to some of the most popular outlets across the nation. For this paper, I will examine how terrorists have used social media as propaganda. I will also analyze the trends in media and terrorism, and how it has provided access for the promotion of the violent messages as well as allowing the news of terrorist attacks and assassinations to reach many parts of the world within a matter of minutes.
“Social media makes the community part of the actual crisis communication response. For example…Twitter was used to quickly share initial information and updates during the 2007 and 2008 California wildfires, 2008 Mumbai massacre, 2009 crash of US Airways Flight 1549, 2010 Haiti earthquake, and 2011 Tunisian uprising.” This information, again in Veil’s 2011 article, reinforces the idea of how social media communication is highly beneficial and furthers an individual’s ability to remain informed on current events.
When I was tracking the progress of Facebook best performing social media contents, more than half of them were related to Hurricane Harvey. I found that the University posted 35 messages related to the Hurricane. There were 34,050 shares, comments, and reactions and 1,093, 385 were reached. The first post was on August 22, 2017 at 6:26 p.m. and the last post was on September 7, 2017 at 7:45 p.m. The University also received 47 direct messages concerning Harvey.
Social media was used for excellent work of some eyewitnesses who truly became amateur reporters. Johathan Fitzgerald began to see a great value to the stream of tweets and status updates that (sometime inaccurately) reported the news of the Marathon Bombings and the subsequent search for the bombers as it happened (Fitzgerald, 2014).
In our day and age, social media has become a huge platform for the sharing of information. The downside to this is the fact that the information
There has been some research conducted on the 2016 presidential election that exposes the negative practice of social media in the campaign. According to Beato (2013), Meltzer (2014), and Reader (2012), the anonymity granted to social media users allows them to be disrespectful to other users without consequences. The present political candidates are obviously not anonymous, but their use of negative social media via Twitter enables their followers to also be negative to others who may not agree
Since the age of Social Media, it has often been argued what is true and what is not true. Several individuals and even societies will automatically assume that what they see is the ‘real thing.’ In the article “5 Reasons Why People Share Fake Photos During Natural Disasters”, A.J. Willingham’s purpose is to show why people will spread false rumors and fake pictures.
The dynamic characteristics of twitter messages have the potential to provide GIS scientists with a great research opportunity to analyze the diffusion of events such as disease outbreaks, environmental changes, and social movements. This could be achieved by digitally collecting tweets that contain geo-tagged data. However, the percentage of geo-tagged data is extremely small comparing to non geo-tagged data. On the other side, the non geo-tagged tweets often contain chaotic data noise such as automated robots that affect the accuracy of the tweet content. For this matter, it is essential to analyze and understand the differences between geo-tagged and non geo-tagged tweets.
In our society, social networking has become very popular over the last 5 years. Twitter is a social networking site that allows users to become “followers” of other people and stay informed about current events and social trends. Many argue whether or not these social websites such as Twitter, are good for society. In two articles about Twitter, the authors present different arguments about why Twitter is good or bad for society. The author of “Heading off disaster, one Tweet at a time” by Jim Spellman, states that Twitter is a good way of communicating current events happening around the world. The other article, “Is Twitter Bad for National Security?” by Tony Bradley, argues that Twitter could have dangerous effects on our nation’s
CNA, a research facility, partnered with the National Emergency Management Association to provide research and information on the public’s expectations about emergency management’s use of social media. Before this research, the data about this connection was only done with case studies and unreliable accounts. CAN used a survey in this research to see how people felt about social media in connection with emergency management. The results found an positive approach. Many people in emergency management agencies, on local and national levels are very familiar with social media. It is usually the larger websites that are more widely known. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, are widely known and publicized. There are however many other social media sites that are not as widely known that are even more useful to nationwide security and communication such as crowdsourcing and Nixle and these are not as widely known (Su, Wardell, & Throkidsen, 2013). So while people in emergency management
The world has never before been connected as much as it is today. One’s ability to communicate through various mediums is rapidly advancing, and this is much thanks to social media.
The term ‘social media’ has become a broad-term to describe a large number of online systems that serve as a platform for the generation, and distribution of user-generated content. Social media creates a virtual social space, where a large number of users come together and interact with one another. These interactions can be either structured, such as responses that are moderated on blogs, semi-structured, such as a discussion between an extended network on Facebook, or unstructured, such as the anarchial functioning of Twitter.
Social media like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and many more are well used nowadays. I have found most of the news which is known to be fake are spreading hugely in social media. Recently the news was so much viral in the social media. The news was about a “Muslim migrant” who was accused of beating up a boy on crutches. This video was so much viral in the social media and the highlighted thing is the boy was claimed to be immigrant. This news was published in Netherlands where there was a big controversy in many parts of the world. But later the news was found to be fake and not convincing. Even the news broadcaster and the video poster were found to be fake for this news. The most surprising thing was that the president of United States “Donald Trump” has shared this news on a social media without knowing the point. It’s totally shocking that the person which is well reputed and known has shared the fake news without finding the truth. Because of these kinds of a crucial mistake made by such person has affected the society and the people. He mainly accused the boy as an immigrant which was totally false and unexpected. Even most of the people trust this fake news with only with the title which can bring unwanted accident. So, we can say that the people should be concerned about the news and the reality. We should have to point out whether it's fake or not instead of blaming or degrading others without real and truthful news.
Nowadays social networking sites play a major role in providing information to public. This paper discusses the social networking site twitter. Twitter as a social networking site can be used as a source of information for event detection with reference to traffic congestion and road accidents. In this paper we consider a real time monitoring system for the detection of traffic in metropolitan cities. For this approach, the system fetches information from the status update messages of twitter. The system thus fetches each tweets from the update messages. Then the tweets are processed in a way to extract useful information from the tweet. Each tweets are subjected to various data mining process and thus the useful information is mined from those data.
