Specialty nursing has evolved over time to include many types of nursing such as informatics, pediatrics, mental health nursing and gerontology to name a few. Not all specialties involve direct patient care as administration is also a nursing specialty. A specialty role is established when the needs of patients change (Hamric, Tracy & O’Grady, 2014). For this assignment, the role of nursing informatics will be compared with several advanced practice nursing roles. Computers were first seen in the hospital setting in the 1960’s. Most of the time these computers were in hospital basements and used for activities such as ordering, charging and patient billing (Murphy,2010). Nurse midwives are advanced practice master’s degree or higher prepared nurses who specialize in the care of women from adolescence to menopause (Presley, 2014). “Nurse-midwives provide primary care, gynecologic care, family planning, preconception care, care during pregnancy and childbirth, postpartum care, care of the normal newborn during the first month of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infection (Presley, 2014).” Nurse midwife dates back to 1920’s and care was mainly provided in rural areas where access to healthcare was limited and there was a high infant death rate (Presley, 2014). Nurse midwifes are even more common today as the still practice in rural areas but are also in many hospital settings. The nurse midwife role was thought to lower costs related to pregnancy and childbirth while also improving the quality of care. Nurse midwives provide direct patient care but still work with those in nursing informatics when using electronic charting. A nurse midwife in a rural setting can use the same charting system as providers in a large hospital meaning that they can communicate and share patient information when collaborating on a patient’s
