Freedom of Speech
Freedom of speech is the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint. Freedom of speech is a right that every american citizen has, but nowadays it seems like people are taking it too far. In some instances such as hate speech or social media bullying people are being negatively affected, but overall it's still an important right that everyone deserves to have. When people call you a hurtful term based on your race, gender or ethnic & religious beliefs it's called hate speech & is protected under the first amendment. “People can't falsely yell fire in a theatre but can yell the N- word at a person of color. College women are told that a crowd of frat boys chanting “no means yes and yes means anal” is something they must tolerate in the name of (someone else’s) freedom” (Nielsen). This shows that there is something seriously wrong with our country right now and people are taking free speech too far. “Hate speech is doing something. It results in tangible harms that are serious in and of themselves and that collectively amount to the harm of subordination. The harm of perpetuating discrimination. The harm of creating inequality”( Nielsen). Hate speech is ruining our country and pulling us further from equality, it needs to be stopped.
People don't understand how much words affect other people, especially on social media and the web. “Then aged 17, carter urged her boyfriend conrad to kill himself by bombarding him with dozens of text messages...he was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup truck” (Knox). Michelle carter sent texts to her boyfriend to kill himself and he did. In the eyes of the court she did nothing wrong, she didn't force him into the truck, or kill him herself, she simply voiced her opinion therefore she probably won't get a big sentence or the death sentence. Which leads to one of the biggest problems we have in this generation, cyberbullying. “In 2013, Ciara Pugsley killed herself in Ireland after being cyberbullied for months with messages calling her a slut and ugly. She was 15 years old…”(Hausman). There are some new laws on cyber bullying but it is still a problem. Words affect everyone differently and people don't know what's going on
Freedom of speech gives people The right to free speech, which is one of the most precious rights an individual has as a citizen of the United States of America. This right gives people the opportunity to speak their mind and give their opinions of what they think should happen. These rights have been questioned and exercised throughout history and have produced extremely positive things in a lot of cases. The questioning of these rights are
Freedom of speech is the balance between personal liberty & government authority. Free speech started & began when the settlers came over to the United States from Europe & made the original British colonies (Freedom Of Speech, 2014). Because of this right being made, having the liberty of free speech means that an individual or the press have the absolute right to talk or express their opinions freely (Freedom Of Speech, 2014).
People have the right to say whatever they want and hate certain types of groups, it is totally their opinion and the others have to respect that fact; the problem becomes when one act upon those things . “In our country, acts — assault, battery, vandalism, arson, murder, lynchings, physical harassment — are punishable under our court system. But words — like nigger — or symbols — such as Nazi swastikas or burning crosses -- are protected by the courts as acts of individual expression.” (National Center for Human Rights Education). There is the recent example of Dylan Roof, a 20 years young man that started shooting in an African-American church killing 9 people including the pastor. It is depressing see how people can define another person and treat it like it has no value, when God made us all the same, and when we all have the same opportunity no matter our race, there is no color to be successful in life. It seems like freedom of speech is giving one the right to offend each other without suffer consequences because one have “ the right to express thoughts”, without think the emotional damage that can be caused to the other person. Arguments can easily provoke a fight, and a fight can provoke jail or even worst death, the first amendment should be limited
Many people come to the United States looking for freedom and liberty and where their essential rights are protected under the Constitution. However, freedom should not be taken for granted as for every rule there may be limits. The First Amendment of the United States’ Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (Corwin 48). In other words, the First Amendment granted freedom of religion, speech, press, peaceful assembly, and petition. The First Amendment is clear enough for anyone to comprehend and process easily; however, people sometimes misunderstand their rights by doing what their First Amendment right does not protect, especially when it comes to freedom of speech. Seven of the most important law cases in the United States’ history are what shaped the American’s society and allowed people to hopefully know and recognize their limits and restrictions when it comes to their speech whether it was a literal speech or a symbolic speech.
Freedom of speech is part of the first amendment which states, “You are free to say almost anything except that which is obscene, slanders another person, or has a high probability of inciting
Freedom of speech: The freedom to speak freely and without censorship and limitation. A great example of this would be a talk radio, where people call in to voice opinion on real time political controversy.
Under the First Amendment, we as Americans have protected rights known as Freedom of Speech. How I see Freedom of Speech is it gives us the right to voice our own opinions without any retaliation or repercussions. An example in which Freedom of Speech may be utilized is before, during and after a Presidential Election. Many people will have their own opinions about how they see each Presidential Candidate fit or unfit. Alot of times after people exercise this right, Rallys and Protests occur. Unfortunetly sometimes when this does happen, boundaries are overstepped. This can result in threats, crimes, slander ad even people getting
It’s an individual right allowing you to speak your mind in any social situation or political accusation. Freedom of speech is what allows you to speak out against the President’s latest law or against your friend’s ridiculous opinion that the moon is made of cheese. But When is too far? When you lose friends over a silly disagreement? When someone loses their job from being in a Protest? When a protester is put in jail? When someone is killed? Where does the common good of the nation and the people our constitution was built off of come in? Why do so many look over this basic principle today? Freedom of Speech is the basic right of all American citizens, but it is only a tool. The thing about tools is, it is not the tool that does the damage or that the makes the repair, but the hand that holds it. So I ask you this simple question: how will you wield your freedom of
According to Hate Speech, they defined it as speech that is intended to insult, offend, or intimidate a person because of some trait such as race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability (Hate Speech, n.d.). Hate speech can
Freedom of Speech means that we all have the freedom to say whatever we want and expressed our opinions freely. I think Freedom Of Speech is becoming more limited in America because in “Censored America” people will act upon if they have a different opinion or they feel offended. They will do anything such as protest or use violence if they think they have different opinion. Words can hurt some people and certain words can be offensive to others. But we should still increased limits on freedom of speech because I think we have the right to say whatever we want but it is still our responsibility choosing words carefully where no one will get hurt by the words. We should try not to abuse our right and we should be allowed to say whatever we want
What is Speech? Speech includes any form of verbal or visual gesture. Freedom of speech means that as a person, you have the right to say what you feel without being punished or penalized. You may have to suffer dire consequences for your actions or words, but you still have the right to say them. Dictionary.com defines Freedom of Speech as, “the right of people to express their opinions publicly without governmental interference, subject to the laws against libel, incitement to violence or rebellion, etc.” In a diverse world such as ours with varying opinions and beliefs, the need to be able to have unlimited freedom to speak about any and everything that concerns us is vitally important to improve our society. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states that:
One of these different types of freedom that we have in our generation today, is freedom of speech. Freedom of speech means that we, the people, have the right and will to post or say anything we want. Being able to have freedom of speech allows us to let our opinions be heard or be read when we want to be heard or read. Freedom of speech allows us to make new laws, state our opinions, and state are beliefs. Freedom of speech has helped in the making of songs, movies, and even books that we have today. It helped some of our favorite things be created.
The founders of the United States government tried to protect our liberty by assuring a free press, to gather and publish information without being under control or power of another, in the First Amendment to the Constitution. We are not very protected by this guarantee, so we concern ourselves on account of special interest groups that are fighting to change the freedom of expression, the right to freely represent individual thoughts, feeling and views, in order to protect their families as well as others. These groups, religious or otherwise, believe that publishing unorthodox material is an abuse of free expression under the First Amendment. As we know, the Supreme Court plays an important role in the subject of free speech and
Freedom of speech usually refers to a citizen's right to the expression and distribution of their opinions. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights defines freedom of speech as a human right, stating that "Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference". It also states that all people have the right to express and share these opinions and exchange information through any medium of communication they choose. It is important that speech and expression of speech be distinctly defined, as the method of expression can be very subjective. For example, free speech in the United States has two limitations; disruption of the peace and incitation of violence. If the speech, or manner of expression of that speech is causing a stir in an otherwise peaceful area or group of people, the speaker can be legally "censored" by the police.
Especially in modern day America, freedom of speech is more prevalent than ever, with the rising division in American politics. In which, there are many Americans with different opinions who are unwilling to truly listen to each other, which greatly affects what freedom of speech truly means today. Therefore, all Americans need to be willing to listen to all types of speech, whether it is hateful or not. In fact, it is clear to see why some Americans would take offense to some of the hateful words that are said to them, as no one would want to experience some of the words that are exchanged. However, all Americans need to realize the significance that freedom of speech has in the lives of everyone, and without it no one would be heard. Since, freedom of speech is part of the first amendment of the constitution, one of the founding ideals of America, which it would would not be to anyone's benefit to limit it now. Additionally, all Americans need to be open to listening to other people with differing views on politics or values, otherwise, freedom of speech will no longer mean freedom of speech. In which, change will be achieved, once Americans accept the fact that hate speech is protected under the first amendment. Where the solution to this problem is for both parties to come to an agreement that all speech is speech, whether it be in a hateful manner or not. Without this acceptance, there will be no freedom of speech at all, as it would be limited and censored greatly, in
