Battles come and go but for Henry it seems he is in a war everyday of his life. It has been three years now since his last battle but not a second passed when he doesn’t think about what happened three years ago. Thesis He is in good shape and he is working everyday to keep it that way. Henry has settled down in a small house that is just right for him. It is early May and news have just came in that the U.S can be going into another against a rebellion army that hatted the way the U.S was ruled. The government said that they assembling the same army as the last war but with different General leading it. That one lucky General is Henry. The next day Henry makes a routine for the army to do. So he shows them how to do it and for 5 hours they practice which formation to get to during a certain situation they practice how to aim and shoot well and how they will march into battle. For the rest of the week they did the same thing until it was drilled into their heads. The following week it was all about working as a team to have each other back and how we can win the war but protect our army at the same time. It was like a perfection after 2 weeks. It has been three weeks and there is 2 weeks until the battle and they got for information on the rebellion army they are planning to separate into 4 groups and surround the U.S army. So after this Henry started to think that we can set a trap on them. He finally came up with the idea and told his army. The idea was that we will tell one of the spies that they spotted us in a certain area and we will hope and take their position but then we won't be there and in a minute we would have to attack them from behind. It was a good idea but they had to time it perfectly so the rebellions don't get time to think and realize what was happening. They had week to prepare for this and Henry took every minute seriously if anyone would screw up he would make them step out of the group and give him a punishment. He started to act like a real General now. He wasn't thinking negative anymore it was all positive but he still had a little bit of
First, one should focus on the language and Henry's ethos. The soldiers are burdened with the thought of a
Most Americans didn’t really understand what was going on during battle, mostly during the time of the civil war because up to this point we we hadn’t had a war that had been this deadly and gruesome. One of the most prominent themes that you see throughout the book is courage; as the novel opens, Henry’s view of being courageous is traditional and romantic. He assumes that, he will return from the war either with or without his shield. Henry’s understanding of courage has more to do with the praise of his peers than any internal measure of his
“The Youth,” which Henry is referred to as, dreamt of glory in battle and being a hero (Crane 2). That is the reason why Henry enlisted himself; even though he told his comrades he was forced to be in the army. His mother’s farewell speech is ironic because he thought that she would give him a tearful and long speech, but all she really said was to “Watch out, and be a good boy” (4). She does not want Henry to be a hero even though that is what he went to war for. She told Henry that she will be fine if he does not return home. Henry tries to pull off being a confident and good soldier, while in the reality he is very nervous about what will happen in battle. Throughout the novel, he questions his courage and if he would run from battle. At an early battle, Henry continuously fires at the enemy line and feels like he is a courageous soldier. However, soon after this battle, another one erupts and Henry runs from it. This is
Henry the young soldier in The Red Badge of Courage novel, goes through a lot when war breaks out in his country. He feels isolated from everyone else around him because he is scared and doesn’t want to have to fight for his life. During some encounters he goes running the opposite direction of danger while his fellow soldiers run into the face of danger. At some points in the book he is
By the end of only two engagements, Henry is stripped of his boyish innocence and already possesses knowledge of his personal limitations. He doesn’t need to do the math anymore. Life has given him its answer to his restless question. He is not as strong as he would hope to be, but neither is he a total loss. He has preserved his life and can fight again. Tomorrow is a new day and another battle. He can test his mettle and prove himself worthy again. It’s all about the inner struggle that wages, even as the outer one clamors to be
In the first battle Henry is curious. He is wondering and is less interested in the fighting. The second battle was much worse. In the second battle the battle was much more bloody. He saw some of his fellow soldiers get shot. Henry was scared when he saw everyone else running away and he ran away as well. In the story it says the soldiers “ scamper away through the smoke terrified, Henry runs too.” This shows how scared he is not just scared but terrified. The second battle was scary the battle must have been especially
After recovering, Henry’s regiment goes into their third battle. Henry develops anger towards the enemy, and his rage motivates him to fire his rifle like a madman. " As Henry’s confidence grows, and as he learns the concept of duty, he is becoming an outstanding soldier" (Salerno 64). This is the turning point in the novel where Henry becomes a true soldier. His regiment is shocked to witness what Henry has become.
Asquat black telephone, I mean an octopus, the god of our Signal Corps, owns a recess in Berlin (more probably Moscow, which one German general has named the core of the enemy’s whole being.) Somewhere between steel reefs, a wire wrapped in gutta-percha vibrates: I hereby . . . zzZZZZZ . . . the critical situation . . . a crushing blow. But because these phrases remain unauthenticated (and because the penalty for eavesdropping is death), it’s not recommended to press one’s ear to the wire, which bristles anyhow with electrifed barbs; better to sit obedient, for the wait can’t be long; negotiations have failed. Away flees Chamberlain, crying: Peace in our time. France obligingly disinterests herself in the Prague government. Motorized columns
Returning to the battle Henry stumbles on a retreating regiment and begs the soldiers to explain
Henry’s vision of war is much different from the other soldiers in the regiment. He is so young he has yet to accept the fact he is just a boy who imagines war as a playground. Henry is unaware of the transition that is soon to be brought into his life which will be surrounded by Acrimony. War is not kind to anyone and therefore Henry needs to conceive war as a serious event and cannot risk making childish decisions. His youth is over and he needs stay focused and develop the qualities of a fantastic soldier in order to return to his family. “The reality of war is much different, as Henry discovers. Soldiers spend most of their time drilling, marching, and waiting for action that rarely comes.” (Marie 443). Therefore most of the soldiers are different from Henry and pay no attention to him at first because he is a young boy. Furthermore, Henry’s vision of himself as a common soldier makes him different. Although it is still undiscovered what the common soldier is. Not knowing what the common soldier really is confuses Henry and he is still unsure of what his expectations are in battle. “His participation in battle is his introduction to life as for the first time he tests himself and his preconceptions or experience itself.” (Jones 447). Indeed, there will be times for Henry to experience these problems and concepts, however, his behavior will change his action in battle. As Henry gets to
Hello world. Grace Lukens reporting to you live from the White House, one of the most reliable economic centers in the globe. Today, I have come on a mission- to bring you an exclusive report on one of the biggest pending issues of the decade: World War III. This could potentially be the most lethal war for the human race, and the world, considering the level of technology we have at our displacement today. Furthermore, this war is going to take a horrible financial toll on all of the world's economies. Some countries will focus their productive resources on weapons and artillery, and this decision could really harm the people on the home front, and reduce the country's overall economic growth and productivity. Any country
He soon finds out, however, that they had won, and he begins to run faster from the thought of chickening out of the battle. This only adds to Henry’s internal emotional conflict with himself. Henry finally returns to his regiment with a wound from a rock and explains that he was wounded while fighting for another regiment.
Today the U.S. declared war on Japan. It all started when Japan attacked the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii yesterday. 2403 people died in the attack, although Hawaii is not a state it is a big loss against the U.S. The war has already been going on for two years so already lives have been lost. The war started when Nazi Germany randomly attacked Poland stating “It is a problem of whether our nation can ever recover its health, whether the Jewish spirit can ever really be eradicated” Hitler is stating that their country is in danger because of the jewish people living there and around there. Many other people are dealing with this same feeling because Britain had already declared war on Germany.
He becomes very occupied and strict in his duties. Before a battle occurred, Henry made sure everything was safe and that no matter what happened his army of ambulances would know what to do. Halfway through the war, Henry gets severely injured but so does one of his good friends. Instead of worrying about himself in this situation, he goes straight to his companion and treats him and merely saves his life. He doesn’t show any disease or pain and he fights throughout the war without showing and fear and shows how brave and courageous he truly is. After this, Henry wants to leave the war because he truly just doesn't see the point any longer.
What Henry experienced during this particular time significantly impacted him and helped him break away from the blueprint of the “average soldier”.
