I find that violence is a large part of our everyday lives. Through people constantly yelling at each other, or from watching television and movies. We are becoming less sensitive to this violence because it has become a norm for us. For this discussion post I decided to watch a SpongeBob episode because I was watching a few children today. The episode is called karate choppers, and it may be one of the most violent episodes of SpongeBob. This episode aired in 1999 and is one of the very first episodes. This episode features SpongeBob and Sandy “playing” karate but Mr. Krabs doesn’t want them to play anymore. This goes on for a majority of the episode. SpongeBob and Sandy are seen hitting each other multiple times throughout this episode and
On the West Coast, Seabiscuit is regularly reported and is a celebrity. In the November of 1936 Seabiscuit began making his reputation by winning the Bay Bridge Handicap after having a bad start of the race. Seabiscuit was becoming a favorite for race spectators even after losing the Santa Anita Handicap. In the West, people recognize Seabiscuit’s win unlike in the East where they only acknowledge him when they can no longer ignore his fame. "He took the victory, the Triple Crown... It would have never occurred to anyone in the East that this horse would be Seabiscuit. When they had last seen him, he was a midlevel stakes winner in the hands of a trainer no one had heard of and a jockey no one remembered" (Hillenbrand, 143). In the West, Seabiscuit
Once upon a time, in the depths of the Tasman sea there was a great civilization built by blobfish called Bloblirahren. Then a great evil, known only from the oldest legends of blobfish kind, awoke and had an evil lust to consume the universe. His name was Robert the vampire squid. He started with consuming the blobfish because he was jealous, greedy and hate built inside him and sought to destroy the blobfish. He consumed many blobfish until he and his armies that he had summoned were slaughtered in a great battle where the hosts of the blobfish king Blobafir drove off Robert and his army far away and they hunted his army down to score of urchins and then they mysteriously disappeared. Years later a group of border scouts were attacked by
Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe or more commonly known as Jelly Roll Morton started showing signs of being musically talented at a young age. Joe “King” Oliver grew up in New Orleans, so it was a given that he was going to grow up with music and want to learn how to play it. Sidney Bechet grew up in New Orleans as well and taught himself to play several instruments that were laying around from his brothers band. Louis Armstrong grew up extremely poor in the streets of New Orleans and learned to play the trumpet on the streets for money. Duke Ellington grew up very well in Washington DC and was taught to play instruments. These artists grew up poor, rich, average, taught themselves, taught by professionals; it really didn’t matter and it still doesn’t
It’s a beautiful day at the beach, the sun is shining down on you as you float and drift on top of the waves. As you lay there without a care in the world, you are suddenly interrupted by a massive swarm of jellyfish; also known as a bloom. Not only does this send you into sudden terror, it also causes a much bigger threat to the ecosystem below you. The excessive growth of jellyfish swarm drastically lowers the population of fish eggs in the ecosystem. Because of this, fishermen lose millions of dollars. People in local communities are figuring out ways to solve this mass production.
In the nature preserve we came across two types of ecosystems. The first ecosystem we encountered as we entered the preserve was the Tropical Hardwood Hammock. The Hammock includes the very interesting Gumbo Limbo (Bursera simaruba), along with the Caribbean Mahogany (Sweitenia mahoganii), and False Tamarind (Lysiloma latisiliqua). Three of the exotic species that live in the Hammock include the Brazilian Pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), Australian Pine (Casaurina equisetifolia), and Melaluca tree (Melaluca quinquenervia). The second ecosystem we encountered was the Pine Rocklands. In the Rocklands you can find the Coontie (Zamia pumila), Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), and Saw Pametto (Serenoa repends), which are all native species. As for exotic species, often you

Schools have an obligation to establish programs that develop students into citizens with the capability to form appropriate choices about violence otherwise, they may become inured to conflict and not obtain the capacity to have positive judgement. Karen Becker-Olsen and Patricia Norburg report in "Caution Animated Violence" that "Researchers have discussed two different outcomes of repeated exposure to violent media/ video games-one associated with aggressive behavioral manifestations and the other associated with desensitization to violence". The authors express the impact that violence has on children when they are in prolonged contact and how they are most likely to be impacted by the brutality. Moreover, young adults, especially of middle and high school age, are likely to be exposed to violence and need to be brought out of a mindset that fighting is acceptable. This book provides a stupendous example for students to see why bloodshed is not the course to take, and shows the consequences that may occur if they do choose to participate. When the main character, Jurgis Rudkus, gets into a brawl with his boss he has to face the ramifications of his behavior by going to jail. This highly impinges his capability to get a job because employers do not want to hire a former criminal when so many people are available, which is something that can be seen in our
“I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready!” These are one of the most popular words of the beloved “absorbent and yellow and porous” sea creature, SpongeBob Squarepants.
On the edge of a wooden platform, I shook. Below me in the lake, floated a red, blue, and yellow inflatable water contraption known as The Blob. The objective of the activity was to jump off a ridiculously high platform, onto the questionable device, and apparently have fun while doing so. But, as my toes skimmed the edge, the weight of gravity demolished any thrill I felt within. What if it popped when I jumped? What if I bounced backwards and hit my head? What if I missed the blob? I backed away slowly, refusing to risk my life. The reward was definitely not worth the possible outcomes. Then my summer camp counselor said something I will never forget. “The reason for your fear is the Devil. The Devil is inside of you and he is what creates your fear. Give up. Give up the Devil”. Now, hold up. Why would any person in their right mind think this is okay to say to a 10 year old child? I had never committed a crime. I had never told more than a little white lie. I had never wished ill upon anyone. Yet, the Devil was inside of me.
The Little Mermaid Jr. was so much fun to be in. We rehearsed for over 3 months and our hard work finally payed off on May 5, 6 and 7th. Before every show we would warm up our vocal cords and sing fun and silly songs. The 8th graders would also share handwritten speeches talking about how their 3 years at KHMS were so great because of the musicals. Mr. Staker also gave everyone pep talks about how we are all a great cast and that we all worked really hard to make the show perfect. When it was time to finally go on stage we would shake down from 5 (shaking our hands and feet 5 times) and we would give each other high fives and hugs. When the lights dimmed that was our signal to stop talking and get ready to go on stage. We would give
My project " Lunge for the Sponge" went pretty well with research and experimentation but there were a few problems and things I would like to point out . If you are going to do this again make sure to use the same measurement as I did because you are most likely to get a different number in for example liters than milliliters. Also make sure you say the amount that's left in the bowl not the amount that the sponge soaked up or you will get very different results. If you are going to use a different brand of sponges or just one the answer of the sponge might be different since I only tried out four sponges not every brand of sponges. Most importantly for best results of coping this experiment do exactly as what the procedure says, or this will defiantly lead to different results. One last thing about my experiment is make sure that you follow my procedure exactly.
Saturday morning cartoons contain twenty to twenty-five violent acts per hour (Stranger & Gridina, 1999). Pediatricians warn that media violence can be especially damaging to children under age eight because they cannot readily tell the difference between real life and fantasy. Many violent acts are perpetrated by the "good guys," whom kids have been taught to emulate. Even though kids are taught by their parents that it's not right to hit, television says it's OK to bite, hit, or kick if you're the good guy. This can lead to confusion when kids try to understand the difference between right and wrong. And even the "bad guys" on TV aren't always held responsible or punished for their actions (Nemours, 1995-2009). “These violent behaviors are learned,” said Dr. Slutkin (Herbert, 2010, p. 1). “They are largely formed by modeling, the almost unconscious copying of one another (Herbert, 2010, p. 1). And then they are maintained by the social pressure of peers (Herbert, 2010, p. 1). It becomes normal to reach for a gun (Herbert, 2010, p. 1). TV is full of programs and commercials that depict behaviors such as sex and substance abuse as cool, fun, and exciting. Studies have shown that teens who watch lots of sexual content on TV are more likely to initiate intercourse or participate in other sexual activities earlier than peers who don’t watch sexually explicit
Architeuthis dux, better known as the giant squid has been around for years. During that time, scientists studied the predator and photographed the giant creature that lived in the deep waters of the ocean. Yet, there is an even larger predator. The Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni: The Colossal squid is longest creature of the deep. It weighs over 1000 pounds, and has shorter tentacles (“Meet” 71) Purely by accident, a colossal squid measuring 14 feet was netted by a fisherman in 2007. Many years prior to this, a squid measuring “15 meters....and stretched like rubber bands [so] the actual size might have been smaller” (McConvey 50) was given to Rev. Moses Harvey in 1873. Never-the-less, because of this captured species, scientists were able to examine the creature and in the process of studying the squid they hoped to understand how the species survives in it’s habitat and depths of the oceans it lives in.
Violent media has been proven time and time again over the past 60 years to cause increased aggression in children and young adults. The long term and short term exposure to violent media has been shown to cause “increased feelings of hostility, expectations that others will behave aggressively, desensitization to the pain of others, and increased likelihood of interacting and responding to others with violence” (Committee on Public Education). One of the most famous experiments done on the subject was done in 1961 by the psychologist Albert Bandura at Stanford University. In this experiment children between the ages of three and six were put in a playroom containing a many activities and toys (Cherry). One of those toys was a bobo doll; a 5 foot tall inflatable doll. An adult would enter and either play with the child from a complete ten minutes, the control group, or at some point during those ten minutes begin beating up the doll, the experimental group. They would also say things such as “pow” and “he keeps coming back for more” while attacking it (Cherry).
Children view violence in different ways when they watch it on television, whether it is cartoons or a type of drama and action programming. After children have watched these television shows, they may have interpreted the meaning into a negative behavior. It could influence them by becoming aggressive, afraid of the world that surrounds them, or it may lead to confusion. When it is said that children may become confused because their parents teach that violence is wrong. When they view someone in a “superhero” position participating in violence, they may see that as it is all right for the simple fact the good person does the action. According to the American Academy of Children and Adolescent Psychiatry, “the impact of TV violence may be immediately evident in the child's behavior or may surface years later (AACAP, 2011).”
