In today’s world, our adolescence is faced with many challenges and obstacles that make it hard for them to overcome. Involvement in sports is an integral part of child development and teaches youth to lead active, healthy lives while developing many of the fundamental skills necessary for a child to succeed. Sports challenge children to excel physically and mentally, and teach valuable skills; such as, leadership, hard work and perseverance which translate beyond the playing field to all aspects of life, whether it be in the classroom, at work, or in the community. In the research done by Tara Parker-Pope, “A large body of research shows that sports are associated with all sorts of benefits, like lower teenage pregnancy rates, better grades and higher self-esteem” (Parker-Pope). The argumentative statement is that teens that get involved with sports have already developed physical, social and personal qualities such as strength, ambition and supportive parents and that is the reason for the correlation between the two. To prove the statement wrong Dr. Stevenson composed a complex research of the Title IX program. “Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 required schools and colleges receiving federal money to provide the same opportunities for girls as they did for boys” (Parker-Pope). Using this amendment as evidence of importing sports into schools and later on testing it to the group of kids that were affected by Title IX Dr. Stevenson states, “Increasing girls’ sports participation had a direct effect on women’s education and employment” (Parker-Pope) She found that the changes set in motion by Title IX explained in education there was about 20 percent increase while there was about a 40 percent of the rise in employment for 25-to-34-year-old women.
