“Francis, go and repair My house, which, as you see, is falling completely into ruin.” In 1205, St. Francis of Assisi heard this command three times while in prayer in the Church of San Damiano. Even though he lived only 45 years, Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) had drawn around him a vast number of followers through his saintly example of humility, purity and imitation of Jesus Christ.

Francis of Assisi once stated “for it is in giving that we receive.” Service has played an instrumental role in my life since a very young age. I have logged over 500 hours of volunteer work while serving in the military. However, for this assignment, seven hours have never meant so much to me. I have a certification as a Direct Service Advocate through the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV); therefore, seeking meaningful service with Crisis Intervention Services was simple. Every article we have read throughout this class proves that service is important, but helping someone who has reached the most fearful part of their life is a life changing experience for everyone involved.
Saint Francis, himself, said he lived in sin during his teenage years. As many young people, he thirst of glory and fame, while he set out to join the Fourth Crusade. During his trip, God spoke to him and told him to go home. While saint Francis was very humiliated, he obeyed and returned home. Later that day, he came across a leper. He was so moved with compassion he gave the man a kiss as a sign of peace and later the man vanished. Saint Francis believed God was testing him there. The final moment of conversion, he was when he visited a dilapidated church and said he heard God tell him to rebuild the church. Francis that God wanted him to rebuild the church, so he stole money and cloth from father. Once his father found out what he did he took him to the bishop and sued for the stole. The bishop told him he had to repay his father and Francis replied renouncing his inheritance and his family. He decided to dedicate his life to serving the
St. Ignatius of Antioch understood the Christian faith to be objective and sensible, stating that Christianity is fundamentally a religion based in historic, tangible realties . He was adamant to the fact that Jesus Christ was a real human with real flesh; he encountered real suffering and died a truly human death. Ignatius saw Christian faith and the person of Jesus Christ in such a way that it put him at odds with the Gnostics, who held to a Docetic Christology that was circulating widely among the Church. For Ignatius, this was a serious issue that needed to be addressed due to the purity of the faith and the truth it held. At stake was the validity of the incarnation, suffering, death, and resurrection of the person of Jesus Christ. If this is not real or true, Ignatius believed that man

This all changed later, as he become truly selfless. One of his friends noticed this sudden change in Francis and asked him, “Francis are you going to take a wife?” In response he said, “I will marry a nobler and fairer bride than you ever saw, who shall surpass all others in beauty and excel them in wisdom.” The lady he was referring to was Lady Poverty. He would go on to sell off all his possessions including his own horse and attempted to give the money to the decaying St. Damian Church which the priest would not accept. It is worth noting that the priest did not take the money because he found the change of heart within Francis startling. “The priest was amazed, and wondering at a change of circumstances incredibly sudden, refused to believe what he heard; and, thinking he was being hoaxed, he would not keep the offered money.” The skeptical reaction of the priest shows how radical and revolutionary Saint Francis’ generosity was, but also how rare a man like Francis was at a this point in
