Inigo was born in 1491 in his family’s castle. His parents were Dona Marina Sanchez de Licona and Beltran de Onaz in 1491. He was first baptized as Inigo. He knew that he would not inherit the castle, so he needed to figure out what he would do with his life. Inigo’s dad received a letter from a friend, Don Juan Velaquez de Cuellar, who’s wife, Dona Maria de Velasco, was a distant relative of Inigo’s mom. Velaquez was the treasurer to King Ferdianand and Queen Isabella of the Kingdom of Castile. He asked Inigo’s dad if one of his younger sons could help him in the castle he worked in, and Inigo’s dad chose Inigo. During his decade of service to the Velazquez family, Inigo acquired important social and practical skills such as proper dress, good grooming, and etiquette. Afterward, Velaquez Velaquez later suddenly died unexpectantly, giving Inigo no position nor plans for the future. Velaquez’s widow assisted Inigo in securing another position, a soldier, by giving him two horses, some money, and letters of introduction and sent Inigo to Don Antonio Manrique de Lara, the Duke of Najera. Ignatius did not worry about not knowing the French language, as he trusted that God would help him cope with language barriers as he did in the past. He walked seven-hundred miles to Paris from Salamanca. In Paris, Ignatius realized that he should focus more on education and postpone his efforts to help the marginalized and people in need. Ignatius realized that in Spain, he devoted too much time to helping others and not enough time getting educated. At the age of thirty-seven, Ignatius enrolled at the College of Montaigu to study humanities, which included the study of Latin grammar and literature. Ignatius had been given money by some of his Spanish benefactors so that he would not have to beg for alms. With this money, he found a room in a boarding house with other Spanish students and turned over the money he was given to another student there for safekeeping. Unfortunately, the student quickly spent the money and Ignatius had no money to pay for school or support himself. He left the boarding house and found a room at the Hospital Saint-Jacques, a hospice for pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. However, the hospice was far away from Ignatius’ school, giving Ignatius far too little time to study and too little time to beg arms.
