Standardized Testing Persuasive Essay

Standardized testing is known to improve students’ education, but is it really needed in school? Standardized testing determines whether a student is prepared for the next grade based on their test scores. While some students do great on their test others struggle a lot. Not all students are good test takers; majority of the students do good in school but struggle when it comes down to testing. While many agree that standardized testing helps improve students education, it shouldn’t be necessary in school because one test score shouldn’t determine a student’s readiness or academic level.

In the world today standardized testing is mandatory in all schools whether they are public or private. If schools continue to make these test mandatory, students grades will show the reflection of what they are not learning. The school might also receive less state funding due to poor performance on these tests. Once No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was introduced US students slipped from 18th in the world in math in 2000 to 31st in 2009 (Standardized). Standardized testing is not beneficial overall because it does not cater to all students, they do not cover real-life topics, and they are detrimental to students.

Diane Ravitch once said, "sometimes the most brilliant and intelligent minds do not shine in standardized tests because they do not have standardized minds" (Diane Ravitch). This quote shows that standardized testing does not meet the needs of all students, only a select few, who may not even be the brightest. A standardized test is an exam that determines a student's achievement, and aptitude over the course of years. An aptitude standardized test determines how well a student will perform after receiving some sort of education. For example, the ACT test you take your junior year of high school. An achievement standardized test determines how a student is performing and evaluates the schools effectiveness, similar to the AZMerit test. Yes i do feel as if the school is wasting their time on standardized testing because as a kid i want learning to be fun not always having to worry about a test every moment. I would like to be taught for different reasons in stead of being always being taught for test and the future, i know when i get older i'll probably would understand a little bit more but till than i want schools to realize that kids don't want to know that we are only being taught for standardized testing and teacher are very strict about the testing i'm not trying to tell any one how to work their classes but sometimes they have to understand its not all about test and teacher why some kids don't like to work .

Standardized tests have caused disagreements all across the U.S. According to http://standardizedtests.procon.org/, though they don’t improve most student achievements, it does improve positive effects in 93% of students. Hundreds of thousands of teachers and parents around the U.S are very against Standardized Tests. The teachers opt against the tests for the simple fact of they are evaluated from the results of their students. Parents opt because the tests end up stressing out there children. Standardized testing teaches students to take tests. The average student takes about 113 tests from kindergarten to 12th grade.

One motivation behind why kids shouldn't take Standardized test is on the grounds that it is bringing about anxiety to both educators and understudies! As per Gregory J. Standardized Testing is any form of a test that is scored in a standard manner which makes it easier to compare the relative performance of students. As the school year comes to an end, kids start worrying about their end of course test. These standardized tests cause issues with not only the teachers and school, but with the student as an individual. Standardized test should definitely be eliminated because it does not benefit students, causes unnecessary stress, and teachers no longer passionately teach students, instead they follow the curriculum they are forced to instruct.

I understand standardized testing is to know where a student educational level is at but it’s not right to make it worth a huge part of our grade. Many fear if they lower the percentage students are more likely to try less on the test but it could actually improve how well they do. Over time standardized testing has become more and more popular. Standardized tests are commonly used in schools today. Tests are a way of checking off, and creating requirements in high school. These tests are helpful in some way but are mostly hurtful in the education of students. Standardized testing put a lot of stress on students. It is unnecessary due to the fact that many students are being held back for not passing it. When I was in high school, I never took all honor classes because I was intimidated from my peers. I was afraid I was not smart enough. Standardized testing is a down fall to many students but also an opportunity for many others. Standardized testing has its pros and its cons. It can be the make it or break it factor into getting into colleges you are hoping to attend or the scholarships you want to earn. Standardized test are very biased and are unfair to people whose first language is not english. The other students have been speaking english since birth, so it is very unfair to children who grew up speaking another language.
