Standardized Testing
In modern society standardized tests have been used for just about everything from applying for a new job, to evaluate thing like your skills your best at like the ASVAB and most popular and commonly used for a minimum competency for students in grade school to determine if the advance to the next grade. These tests have been used so common that the education department in our government has grown from a budget of miniscule to billions and billions all invested in the students of the future. The infamous standardized exam is a consistent tool used to measure all students on the same scale to get the most accurate results possible. The standardized tests have been becoming the number one thing that colleges look at when looking at an applicant’s form rather than the GPA like in the years before. The reason for this is because in modern day high school the GPA isn’t that accurate because now there are a variety of different courses you can take as well as teachers that are stricter than others affecting the “measuring stick” like in the standardized exams. These tests are also used to determine if a child has learned the basic skills and material to pass on to the next grade seen in grade school. An option presented by anti-standardized test associations are teacher made tests and assessments. The biggest problem with this is that “teacher graded assessments are inadequate alternatives to standardized tests because they are subjectively scored and unreliable.”(Procon) This is 100% true because a teacher can give their assessment to the students and have no idea what level they are at and the students are without a doubt going to fail the test. These tests determine if you understand the basic skills of the subject. This can determine your fate for the future, between passing on to the next grade or staying behind. Whether they made a difference to those who passed is debatable but they definitely made a big impact on the lives who did not. These tests were first used to determine if a child was able to do the basic necessities of life such as read, write and talk. Business were really impressed with the applicants they began to hire because the tests made sure they were qualified to do so. This is how tests companies got a lot of their income from.
The standardized tests people and students take today go through some tough steps just to make it to the desk. First the federal government mandated the Act No Child Left Behind that enforced standardized to be taken in all 50 states. The next step is taken by the state educational officials, they usually set up a contract with a testing firm to decide what will be administered on the tests. The next step is to choose their testing company such as Pearson for the STARR test. Then the dates and times would be discussed with all government officials within the education department within that
