State Run Lottery Research Paper

Being stoned to death by 300 of your friends and family is possibly the worst way anyone would ever want to be killed. In the short story “The Lottery” written by an author Shirley Jackson, she mentions about a small village consisting of 300 residents who most reluctantly participate in an annual lottery drawing. I know, who in their right mind would hesitate to be a part of an event that gives you a possibility of winning a prize, which makes you wonder what the prize is. At the end of the story the protagonist, Mrs. Hutchinson, who also happens to be the winner of the lottery is stoned to death. I argue that Jackson wrote this story to inform us how living in a small community isn’t always a great thing because in a small population people start gossiping about one another, which can lead to issues and could turn into hatred.

The lottery is one of the oldest known game of chance, dating all the way back to 205 B.C. in the Han Dynasty. Being built upon pure luck, it has garnered attention all over the world in it's various forms of existence. After money began its association with the lottery in l443, it became even more popular worldwide. While existing in multiple forms, the most popular form of lottery is the randomly selected number method, where winnings are based on the correct numbers predicted. It is estimated that nearly half of the citizens living in the United States have participated in the lettery. The concept of the lottery is the same throughout every state, people have money and are interested in “playing the odds”; the revenue from these people is then divided and used to benefit organizations of the state’s choice. Exactly where the money goes to is what differs from state to state. Some states put all the revenue from the lottery into one trust fund that is allocated for a more broad and generalized group. Other states target specific programs such as, preserving natural parks or assisting the educational system with additional funds. The State of Alabama does not have a lottery and its locals are the ones missing out. Due to the lack of the lottery in Alabama, those who choose to play the lottery must travel out of the state, which means their money goes to other state’s lotteries benefiting that states programs and ultimately its residents. By keeping the peoples money in the state a lottery will open an endless amount of opportunities to better state supported programs and the state as a whole.

How do our relationships with others define who we are? Others affect us greatly. The people who surround us everyday have a great impact on our own life. Friends and family are the people who create you, and are part of the reason of who you are today. For example, when there’s a new trend, or when someone says a mean comment, you might change something about you at one point or another. Who affects your life?

The lottery in this country is a big past time for Americans. It gives hope to the hopeless and disappointment to a multitude of participants. A quick view of statistical information regarding the lottery shows that out of all people who take part in this country wide phenomenon, each individual person has a 1 in 175,223,510 chance of hitting the jackpot (AmericanStatisticalAssociation.org). The author of “Against The Odds and Against the Common Good”, argues that the state lotteries are “urging people to gamble”. Gloria Jimenez, of whom is the author of “Against The Odds and Against the Common Good”, creates assumptions that support her stance on her argument. Jimenez also uses the viewpoint from people who disagree with her logic, by stating various counter statements that contradict her stance. To fully understand Jimenez, we have to view the different factors of her stance on why states should not be urging people to gamble, assumptions that she makes to support her stance and countering views of people who don’t necessarily agree with her argument.

The Texas Lottery negatively impacts the people that play the lottery and the programs that are supposed to benefit from the proceeds. Because of the big dream of winning, the lottery has taken a toll on Texans. “People believe that the Texas Lottery is their only chance to strike it rich” (Buckland, 2010). There is not near enough money going towards the Texas Education

The author than fails to tell the source of this experiment so the reader of her essay is left wondering if it is even valid evidence from a reliable source. These viewpoints are better placed with a thesis that reads, “States should no longer be in the business of the state lottery.” The evidence she brings at that point covers most of her essay and I do not find them addressing the issue of “the states should not be in the business of urging people to gamble” (Jiménez 116-119).

The following two paragraphs are a summary of Gloria Jimenez's essay Against the Odds and Against the Common Good. States should neither allow nor encourage state-run lotteries. There are five major arguments that people use to defend lotteries. One is that most lotteries are run honestly, but if gambling is harmful to society it is irrelevant to argue if they are honest or not. The second is that lotteries create jobs, but there are only a small handful of jobs that would be eliminated if lotteries were put out of business. Another argument that would support keeping lotteries is that, other than gambling addicts, people freely choose to buy lottery tickets. My entire semester was devoted to the in-depth analysis of the lottery, and the debate of it being a blessing or a curse. In relation to the lottery and the controversy I thought it would be more beneficial in this documentary project to actually show you, which brought me to animaker. In the animated video I illustrate four characters, one which in fact wins the lottery and becomes a different person. In the video it takes you through the altercations of his psychological, behavioral, and social health endanger and altered for the worse just as it was explained in the argumentative research essay. For the last 17 years the Texas Lottery generates billions for good causes in the state; including education and veteran’s services. The Lotto Texas Jackpot’s largest jackpot payout was 5/29/2010 for $64,765,705.17.The two options for receiving money are Cash Value Option (CVO) and 30 Annual Payments (AP). I personally would pick the option of CVO to take the tax hit upfront and invest my money for retirement to borrower on later. Another reason I would pick CVO over AP is I don’t know how long I have to live on this earth; so I want to enjoy as much of the money now.

The New Mexican reports some politicians have sent a letter to New Mexico Lottery CEO that a new lottery pilot program that allows people to purchase tickets at the gas pump with a debit card violates state law.

The lottery is not an effective way for states to raise funds for education. I don't think that lottery is an effective way to raise state revenues for education because not all the money goes to schools all the time. What happens sometimes is the schools just get a little part of the lottery, for example, some states use most of the lottery money for the environment and community and most of the time whatever is left is usually put towards education. Someone opposing can say that lottery does help education because of states such as Georgia that benefits very well from it. The money made from the lottery is not affecting state educations as much and it's misleading lots of people.

States love lotteries. Lotteries provide extra money and allow states to not raise taxes and meet budgets. Extra money and lower taxes are always nice. With this in mind, many states have budget issues and already high taxes, so it seems like the lottery is the answer.
