I was roughly three weeks into my summer coursework and my mother and I drove to Tennessee to attend to my grandmother’s services. I found out I had cancer about two weeks after I started my senior year of high school. At the time, I was enrolled in 5 Advanced Placement classes. I decided to drop AP Art because enrolling in a normal art class provided me with a much needed break during my otherwise academically rigorous day. Further, my school offered service learning, which allows seniors to enroll as a teacher’s assistant for credit. My counselor enrolled me as her assistant instead of my current elective, so I would have a down period to do homework in middle of the day. I asked each teacher for a list of assignments to complete and then took three weeks off in October to recover from surgery.

My plan for this year off from school is to pay off a majority or all of my loans if possible. I currently work as a caregiver, but I may need to pursue a different job with more hours to accomplish this goal. I also took this year off to retake my MCAT, which I recently received my score and am pleased to know I have improved by eight points.
