Renowned for teaching how to create economic and social values through liberal arts, at Swarthmore College I want to study how to become a deft American government policy maker, hopefully a future Secretary of State. I expect an array of Swarthmore professors to give me an astute understanding of business planning and leadership skills in disciplines ranging from information technology to border and patent agreements, all parts of my critical long-term objective of specializing in a new global political process. During my Swarthmore Peace and Conflict Degree, my focus will be on strengthening my critical thinking and communication skills while broadening my understanding of philosophy, anthropology, and the humanities to become a successful
These organizations will enhance my found passion for service and justice and empower me to do more. Beyond the opportunities Berkeley law offers to me, I know that I will add a unique perspective on law and justice to the already diverse and inclusive student body because I have a unique background, and experiences including, my experiences from my immersion trips in various communities in Kenya, Tanzania, and the United
The study of peace can often be complex and multifaceted due to its multidimensional outlook on certain cultural, political and environmental influences. As the United States entered the spring of 2017 it saw itself becoming more polarized and conflicted. The election of Donald J. Trump has provoked many emotions for Americans but whether good or bad, republican, or democrat, it has most noticeably been a year of difficulty. Unity is an aspect that people from both sides of the isle have been questioning and trying to address. In Trump’s first extended statement as president-elect, he used unity as a deliberate theme, stating:
Through experiencing social injustices, and making myself more culturally aware of inequality amongst social classes, I believe I have cultivated the leadership skills necessary for success. My willingness to reach out to the environment beyond me has exposed me to a career path that excites me and is my true passion. I plan to take action to improve the lives of the defenseless and those who are politically and socially disadvantaged. Through utilizing what I have learned by dedicating my time to service I know that I will truly make an impact on the lives of the helpless. During my years attending university I plan to continue a rigorous course load focused on a career path that truly intrigues me. I also plan on continuing to dedicate my free time to service and philanthropy. Overall, I have dedicated my high school career to becoming a leader in and out of the classroom. I hope that by attending University of Texas-Austin I will be able to utilize the resources provided to become a leader prepared to make worldwide change, continue on a path of academic achievement, and create a successful future not only for myself, but for those in generations to come as
Although the many roles of a business professor are difficult to determine, Mercer University’s mission statement provides a surprisingly thorough account of these roles. The mission statement, “to teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to inspire, to empower and to serve,” may not seem like a description of the roles, but one would struggle fruitlessly to think of a great business professor who did not fulfill these roles. The importance of these roles is undeniable, however, among these roles, learning is especially important and is also the most appealing to me. This appeal is due not only because learning is the precursor for other roles, but also because of my personal adoration of learning.
A student reaching the end of their public funded education thinks about the possibilities. Should they go to university, stay at home and work at a local job, learn a trade, or possibly join the Peace Corp? They contemplate the matter. They consider the advantages and disadvantages. They listen to the council of others. Then they decide and make their plan. It is now the time for action. The applications, interviews and the rest of the work must be done. When a war is waged, a law passed or anything else of importance is done, there are two steps: thought and action. Without these nothing would be done.
The novel “A Separate Peace” can be interpreted in many ways as it highlights several interesting topics. I’ll be discussing my own personal interpretation of the book. The themes I’ll be covering are many common ones, coming-of-age, good and evil, and envy and hate.
The book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, impacted me in a positive way because it shows how to correctly live life, control emotions, and future changes on decisions you make. In the book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Socrates taught many things the fuqto Dan: future will not be what it is expected to be, something bad could lead to something good, control emotions and be happy of what you have, and do not make any decisions that could lead to bad things because future depends and changes on decisions made today. These are the things that Socrates taught Dan in the book and also impacted me in a positive way.
I am David Terrell from Little Rock, Arkansas. Just a little about myself, I currently attend The University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, where I am acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in politics with a minor in history. In politics, I study under the concentrations of national institutions and policies, identity and diversity, and law and justice. In history, I focus on American and European histories. The University's liberal arts curriculum has taught me skills of leadership, research, analytics, writing, and public speaking skills.
War is defined as a state of armed conflict within a nation or state or between nations or states. How can war be reduced to a mere conflict without explaining the vivid night terrors from the soldiers that must now live a life of psychological torment or the accumulating pressure placed on young adolescents to partake in the bloody event of the murder of human lives; furthermore, what does the definition of war imply about the societal views on the glorification of war? A Separate Peace prominently explores how war majorly affects not only the soldiers that are in the center of the war, but the civilians that live under the nation. The psychological toll that the younger generation faces is evidently shown through the causes and effects of the young men at a boys’ boarding school whose decisions are influenced by the war, such as Leper whose actions triggers an array of character development across several characters and reveals the philosophical significance of war. Leper’s role in A Separate
At Bowdoin, I hope to study government. Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted gain a better understanding of the world.
World peace is a topic chosen to prove that there is currently no possible way for us, humans, to achieve peace between all the nations without us having to deal with current problems we have now. The study of the topic has been quite hard, but fascinating as the research forehand has to lead me to discover more unknown problems that are likely to be preventing us from world peace. With evidence from credible articles, the paper determines that a solution to a war-free world without any problems is quite impossible. The evidence in the paper includes overpopulation effects, current arguments that can be possibly leading on to fatal war, and the design of the human brain which may be the direct cause of the violence that goes on in the world today. The evidence gathered will help assist that World Peace will not be happening in the world anytime soon.
Food has found it’s way into nearly every facet of our lives and it affects us in ways we may not realize. These effects are what interest me. My major of choice is nutrition because it is fascinating to see how the food we eat impacts us both physically and emotionally. I would like to know why certain foods can evoke such distinct emotions. It is my personal belief that food can either heal us or make us sick. It would be amazing to help someone overcome an illness by directing them to make the proper nutritional choices. With nutrition, there are so many different paths I could choose as it is quite the versatile major. The Minerva Scholarship would help me immensely in my pursuit of these studies.
Sometimes the longest and toughest journeys are inside one’s mind; and although others cannot notice them instantly, they change personalities profoundly. Dan, the main character, is a gymnast-student for Berkley University, California. His life seems perfect, he has everything he wants: friends, girls, good grades, his talent and passion for gymnastics and the strive to go to the Olympics. Until he meets Socrates. Socrates is a gas station attendant who leaves a mark in Dan’s memory right from the beginning. When they start to get to know each other, Dan understands that he’s nothing but a fool, and that he needs Socrates’s guidance to wake up and reach a deeper state of knowledge, a state of enlightenment.
For my book project I read the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman. Set in Berkeley California, Dan Millman a college student struggles to find the part of himself that has always been missing. One night while out walking from his dorm, Dan comes across a gas station and a strange man that is soon to turn his life upside down. This man, known as Socrates, shows Dan a side of existence that only few people had ever seen. To become a warrior like Socrates and have the mind to not allow the regular struggles of life to control a single part of you. Socrates takes Dan in and tries to create a warrior from a young star athlete with the ignorance of every other human on this earth. Through his
I found this week's readings interesting and very thought provoking, although I was particularly disturbed by "Original Child Bomb" by Thomas Merton. I believe this was probably Merton's intended response to this poem. If nothing else, it certainly gets the reader thinking and hopefully questioning our actions as a nation.
