“Loyalty is hard to find. Trust is easy to lose. Actions speak louder than words.”-Chinese proverb. When you say things, they aren’t always true as the actions of characters in short stories are more than just the words they say. In Richard Peck’s “Priscilla and the Wimps” and Todd Strasser’s “On The Bridge,” loyalty is a huge theme, creating the conflict and building up the tension. In “On The Bridge,” the main character is unloyal to his friend, whereas in “Priscilla and the Wimps,” the main character is loyal to her friend, saving him from losing money and getting beat up by the terrorizing gang with Monk Klutter and his Kobras. The young adult novel Nightjohn depicts the plight of enslaved African-Americans from the point-of-view of an adolescent so that readers can feel as well as learn about the difficulties experienced by slaves in the antebellum south.
