The growing influence of the film industry on the everyday lives of all people can be accredited to Steven Spielberg. Starting as a young, little known director, his unique story telling abilities quickly launched his career. After Spielberg’s first major debut of his talent directing Jaws, he became an unstoppable force in the movie industry. Steven Spielberg led to evolvement of the movie industry, societal forces driving movie plots completely altered showing more of the connections that are formed between people instead of the agenda usually pushed by directors. It was only six years after he signed his original contract with Universal Studios when Jaws was released in 1975. “Jaws was a thoroughly groundbreaking film in every way imaginable. It had a tremendous impact on the way movies are made, marketed and merchandised and spawned a pop cultural fascination with sharks. And, perhaps most notably, the film generated a visceral fear of swimming that continues to afflict multitudes to this day.” (Denver Film Society). Without Spielberg’s technics that he used throughout filming, advertising, and showcasing many of our modern day movie would not be the same. Jaws was the first major film to use computer generated special effects paving the way for the intense special effects used today. Movies like Avatar, Finding Nemo, Titanic and nearly all of the movies that have been in the box office in the past ten years use the path Spielberg created, some of which would never have been able to be made. Jaws was the first movie to be successfully marketed on television. Previously, movie advertisers did not place importance on television ads, but once Jaws was making millions more than any movie that has ever been put in theaters, television became recognized as a powerhouse. Jaws also was the second movie, behind The Godfather, to be released in hundreds of movie theaters on the same day. Beforehand, movies would be released in one city for about three months then slowly move to other city and then eventually make its way to small town movie theaters, this method allowed theaters to own a monopoly of certain movies. Jaws was released in 465 theaters on one day, compared to The Godfather’s 316 theaters,
